Do you plan your own birthday party?

I have, though come to think of it, I've usually had a cohost (like FI). Last year FI paid for everyone, since we rented a private karaoke room, and we got a bottle of liquor, mixers, water, and beer, and a fruit tray. In the past, if we go out for dinner or bowling, people pay their own way. If it's a house party, I provide alcohol.

This year, I'm inviting everyone to show up at a bar in the afternoon where they have a nice patio area with picnic tables. If they don't have a food truck that day, I'll bring picnic food for everyone. If there IS food there, I'll buy everyone their first drink.

At this point in our lives, going out and buying your own food, and buying the birthday person a drink or something, is the most "gift" we give. Unless it's a SUPER close friend, who might give me a necklace or something. So I do think it's different than a shower or something where you're saying, "Hey! Show up and give me presents!"

[QUOTE]No, usually I just go out to dinner with my parents on my birthday and with FI on the weekend between our birthdays. I can only think of one birthday night out that was thrown by the birthday person, but it was also half for his SO since they share a birthday. And it was to a place they go pretty regularly, it just happened to be their birthday. Throwing your own birthday party doesn't bother me if it's a pay your own way deal since birthday parties are a low key non-gift giving event among my friends.

FI and I are 15 days apart (May 9 and May 24 - coming up soon), but we're foodwhores, so we go out twice. :-) Then we cut back on the extra spending in June!

My parents are 5 days apart, so when they were married they would go out jointly. Also, they were born around labor day weekend. Good excuse to celebrate.

  • My DH loves Halloween and every year for the past 13 years (believe me that I've wanted to skip a few years but everyone looks forward to it and complains if I say we're not gonna do it) we have thrown an annual Halloween costume party. DH decorates the entire house like a haunted house (really freaky, gross, and scary crap) , I plan, I organize, I send out the invites, I host, and Halloween also happens to be my birthday. While the invitations have never said birthday party, it's also a birthday party since my sister always brings a cake, presents, and everyone sings Happy Birthday. So while technically I've never planned my own birthday party, realistically I plan it every year.
