Help! My dress is too big! Seamstress or purchase new one?

I got my dress in the mail yesterday and it is WAY too big! I've lost 35+ lbs since I purchased the dress so it's quite large.
I'm concerned about alterations because the bust going around the top to the back is covered with beads and I can't see how a seamstress would work around the beads without wrecking the entire dress.
Should I purchase a new dress (smaller size) and sell the one I got yesterday and chance it with a seamstress?
Anyone know of a great seamstress in MN (St. Paul / Minneapolis area) that would be up for a challenge?

My dress was slightly big around the bust - most every dress needs alterations.  One of the "famous" budget brides on this board (grlygrl15) bought a sample size 12 dress or something and altered it down to a 2 - very cost-effective for her wedding.  It's definitely possible.  If the dress has already come in, take it to a seamstress and make the decision there.  My dress also had a lot of beading - what they usually do is take off the "lace" that holds the beading, alter the dress, then applique the lace/beading back on.  Does that make sense?

Don't be worried - a seamstress should be able to do the job. I used Louise Kegley out of St. Paul.

I also bought a sample gown that was a size 10 and am having it taken in to a size 2 or 4. It has a lot of detail on the top half and my seamstress (Louise Kegley) has done a great job. She charges around $200-250 as her maximum charge for major alerations. The only down side is that you will have to go in for multiple fittings but I like it because I get to try different jewelry on with it all the time and I love trying my dress on. Pics are under my bio if you would like to see the transformation.

I totally agree with the PPs - bring it to a seamstress (I also recommend Louise) and have her take a look. I bet it is very doable!

I'll fourth or fifth  or sixth Louise.  She was my seamstress, and I've heard of her working wonders on dresses.  I can send her number to anyone who PMs me.

I lost weight before my wedding too and my seamstress did an amazing job on my dress!  My dress was VERY difficult and she rocked it!

Thanks for the info. I bought my dress in New York so I don't really have connections to local seamstresses. I will definately contact Louise - sounds like she has done a great job for everyone!

Really any experienced seamstress can take a dress in up to about 2 full sizes. Truly talented seamstresses can work with a much larger range than that.
