Anyone else watch the Suze Orman show last night?

A caller asked her if it would be okay to ask for cash wedding gifts to pay off their $100k+ student loan debt in lieu of actual presents.  Suze was very supportive of the idea, even suggesting that she put a chart on their wedding website detailing how an $X amount gift would pay of Y% of the debt.  FWIW, the caller said they weren't having a "big" wedding, although we all know the definition of "big" is relative.

I thought many of you over here would be horrified!

  • I didn't see it, but I'll look it up online. Although I don't owe $100,000 in loans, i'd be horrified to identify any debt on my wedding website for guests to see.

  • Wow, that's horrible!!!  I usually watch and enjoy Suze, but missed last night.  But yeah, that is bad advice.

I do have to say watching Suze Orman together raelly helped DH and I get on the same financial page before we got married.  It was a great way to open up discussion about how we each feel about finances!
  • wow...just wow. i was actually watching last night but fell asleep almost right away. i'm shocked! i can't even imagine letting my guests into my 'debt life' and expecting them to pay for it. i usually hold back on the word tacky but this is a totally appropriate time to use it.
  • I think Suze Orman is very practical, but I wouldn't go to her for etiquette advice.
  • Did she mean it's okay to use the money for the SLs or specifically ask for money to do so?  There's a difference.  Once you get the money, you are free to use it in any way you see fit.

This. Our families know where we stand because they give us advice but I would be...unsettled...putting that information out there for all of our extended families and friends to see.

I know Suze has a lot of followers, but the couple of times I've seen her show I was not impressed and felt like it did not help me at all.

I have a good amount of SLs (not 100k) and a lot of my family members do know that, but I would not put it on my wedding website to advertise to my extended family.

Oh no!  She was saying it was okay to sollicite money for the purpose of paying off the SLs.
