Re: Win a $50 AmEx Gift Card: Tell Us Your Invitation Frustrations!

  • 1. What has been your biggest struggle regarding wedding invitations? (e.g., wording, searching the invitations and picking the design, ordering invitations, understanding the etiquette, etc.)

*It took me a long time to decide on invitations, I looked online, met with a graphic designer who would have made them for me, went to invitation stores and couldn't find one I loved. When I finally found the invitation I loved online, I was so excited. They were more expensive then I wanted, but they were perfect and I was told font changes and special lined envelopes were included in the price.  I worked with a representative to pick the perfect color, font and envelopes, but, as I went to order them I was told special envelopes were NOT included and were going to add to the price of invitations that were already over budget. I was devasted, I actually cried about it (which is embarassing)! Luckily, I think because of my tears and because one of their reps had misinformed me (thank goodness they recorded the conversations!!), although they couldn't provide me with the free envelopes they applied other discounts that made the price managable. It was just unnecssarily stressful!

    2. What are some questions that you’ve had regarding invitations and paper needs for your wedding?
    * The inner envelope! I actually had a friend who just put it in her invitation (didn't put anything in it, just mailed it to us with the rest of her invitation stationary). None of my other friends used them at all so I had no idea what they were for! I asked the woman who is addressing our invitations (computer calligraphy) what they were for and she explained  they were used to list who was invited in a less formal manner. The other question I had was about the wedding tissue paper. I know it was to keep the ink from bleeding through, but I'm not sure if I should use it or not (it came with my invites).

    3. What have you found to be the most time consuming task when it comes to choosing invitations and sending them out?
    * Picking them certainly took a long time. I think stuffing them will be the most time consuming, and I know I will be so nervous sealing them before making sure everything is in there!!

    1. What has been your biggest struggle regarding wedding invitations? (e.g., wording, searching the invitations and picking the design, ordering invitations, understanding the etiquette, etc.)

Ordering the invitations was the worst! We got our save the dates from Wedding Paper Divas and loved them so I wanted to get my invitations from there too. For some reason the same font name looked different on our invitations than on our RSVP cards and it took me at least a week to work it out with them!

    2. What are some questions that you’ve had regarding invitations and paper needs for your wedding?

It took me a while to figure out when to send them out. Ours went out the second week of March for our June 8 wedding. A friend is geting married June 23 and hasn't sent them yet! What is the approporiate amount of time?

    3. What have you found to be the most time consuming task when it comes to choosing invitations and sending them out?

Addressing invitations took forever!! It made me think getting a calligrapher would have been worth it but we were on a budget

  • 1. Young men not understanding wedding invite etiquette. If it doesn't say "and guest" you aren't supposed to bring one.

    2. I've thought about how to use the leftover invites. We'll use them for programs and table numbers!

    3. We made invites for our second reception in a different state and the zipcode was wrong on everything, so I had to redo them.
  • 1. What has been your biggest struggle regarding wedding invitations?
I really wanted letterpress but it is just out of our budget...

    2. What are some questions that you’ve had regarding invitations and paper needs for your wedding?
Where can I get something printed inexpensively?

    3. What have you found to be the most time consuming task when it comes to choosing invitations and sending them out?
I did the design myself - choosing a recommendation for a hotel took forever...
  • 1. What has been your biggest struggle regarding wedding invitations? (e.g., wording, searching the invitations and picking the design, ordering invitations, understanding the etiquette, etc.)
The wording.  Oh dear goodness, the wording.  Fiance, goodness love him, wasn't sure what he wanted things to say, but he was convinced that too many adjectives would "give him hair palms."  I did some desktop publishing and designing years ago, so it was easy to design invitations once we had decided on a theme.

    2. What are some questions that you’ve had regarding invitations and paper needs for your wedding?

For those of us designing our invitations on our own, where can we find larger envelopes?

    3. What have you found to be the most time consuming task when it comes to choosing invitations and sending them out?

First, it was dificult designing the invitations and sending wording back and forth.  Fiance lives in another time zone (almost in another day), so that ate up a lot of time.  Additionally, it took us awhile to hammer out who was getting invited because his parents are divorced and not speaking. That process has taken the better part of two months because no one will talk to anyone else (facedesk).
  • 1. My fiance and I didn't have a lot of trouble designing our invitations online, but we've had a lot of struggles working with a website over an in-person stationer. First our proofs arrived with misspelled words and incorrect dates, then the actual invitations arrived with the wrong colors. Luckily, we got in contact with the website, and they're redoing them with the correct specifications.

    2. I've been wondering about what stamps to use. I don't want to use the run-of-the-mill USPS forever stamps, but I don't want to spend the money to personalize them (especially because we need two for each invitation, one for each RSVP, and one for each Save-the-Date). I'm just not sure where to find some tasteful stamps. I've also been trying to find some bellybands to add to our invitations suite, but I'm not sure where to find them individually and may end up cutting some from craft paper myself.

    3. Finding everyone's address! We do so little by snail mail these days that I realized I didn't know any of my friends and barely any of my family's addresses.

</div><div>My biggest struggle has been deciding whose names to put on the invitation. I am paying for our wedding myself with no help from my parents. Traditionally I understand it to be that whoever is hosting the wedding (or paying for it) is whose names go on the invitation. However, I'm concerened that my mother will be offended as she has always known wedding invitations to include the parent's names.

</div><div>One question that keeps gnawing at me is, is it ok to have an invitation that doesn't particularly match your theme? My Fiance wants a beach wedding, but my taste in invitations are more formal. Is it ok to send a nice black and white damask printed invitation when people may be standing in the sand for a ceremony? I have found that the majority of the beach themed invitations I've been looking at are a tad too casual. </div><div>

</div><div>The most time consuming thing is to actually nail down which invitation I want. I've checked site after site comparing prices and style and I've yet to find one that is perfect for me in every way. </div><div>

  • 1. Searching for the invitations themselves have been the biggest struggle! So many options out there!

    2. I had questions on the different types of paper and the printing methods.

3.Figuring out the wording for the invitations...and the direction cards!

  • 1. My biggest struggle has been deciding on the wording. My mother and I have a very ugly/ complex relationship and she is not invited to the wedding. But, my Dad really wants me to include her name on the invite. My fiance and I are the primary hosts. But, my dad is doing what he can to help so I feel like I need to honor his wishes. I am having difficulty deciding what to do. I love my dad and want to make him happy. But, if it were up to me I would not include either parent's name. Sigh!
    2. I have had questions about proper wording and cost.
    3. It was very time consuming sifting through all of the designs. But, I am glad I had options :)

    1. the whole thing has been a struggle! firstly, i liked too many styles (especially on weddingpaperdivas!) secondly, my mother is over involved with what she calls "the verbiage" while I've assured her that I'll be following all of the rules, lastly, i live in France, and I'm planning almost this whole thing via the internet, so websites don't work, samples are mailed to my mom who holds them up on skype, and i have to sit back and remember that they'll get tossed after the wedding anyways..*bigrelaxingbreath*

    2. Timing, three months is standard, but then how much time do you give for a reply? If I'm not giving people a choice of entree (budget bride here!) do I have to say that to people?  Should I fill in their reply cards for them?  If my fiancee's parent's aren't able to make the trip overseas, and didn't contribute to this wedding, but contributed to the civil ceremony we had to have here, do i put them on the invite, or leave them off?

    3. Luckily, I think my most time consuming part would have to be the choosing.  My mom's friend has offered to do the calligraphy, and my mom will be stuffing, so whittling it down from 64 favorites to my current 4.  Unless it takes a really long time for my mom to get me the addresses of her list...;)

Either way, I know it'll all work out. Thanks Knotties!

    1. What has been your biggest struggle regarding wedding invitations? (e.g., wording, searching the invitations and picking the design, ordering invitations, understanding the etiquette, etc.)
My biggest struggle was trying to find invitations with the wording we wanted. My fiance and I wanted to include his parents on the invitations since they are helping with a few costs and his dad is hand making us a  wine box, but they aren't hosting. I couldn't find any websites that would let me add them after his name with a design I liked. Some that were close were very expensive. Now I have decided to just make them all myself.

    2. What are some questions that you’ve had regarding invitations and paper needs for your wedding?

What is the correct wording for the invitations? Do I really need an inner envelope, especially since I am doing pocketfolds? How do I know the appropriate postage to use once I have my invitations fully assembled? How do I make my invitations myself from scratch?
(this board was great for all of these questions and all the other ones I didn't think of)

    3. What have you found to be the most time consuming task when it comes to choosing invitations and sending them out?

The most time consuming task SO FAR was trying to find an invitation that had a design I liked that I could use the wording I wanted. Now that I have decided to do my invitations myself, the hardest part will actually be making the invitations. I am printing the wording on my printer, and then I am using embossing to make the design. So I will have to print the invitations, cut them down to size, then hand emboss the design. Then I will have to do it all over again with the RSVP cards, direction cards, etc. After that I will have to put all about 100+ invitations together. Thank goodness I have a very helpful mother and 9 months left to make it happen.

    1. The biggest struggle that I have encountered in my attempt at wedding invitations is the wording. It's been difficult to find proper wording that follows etiquette and formality while still having a sense of uniqueness to it. 2. One pressing question that I had was whether it was 'necessary' to layer the invitations. Another question was how to secure the invitation with the enclosures when not utilizing a pocket invitation type. 3. I have found that the most time consuming task has been getting the invitation wording just right. I've unfortunately had to order and discard of my first batch of invitations due to second guessing my wording choices.
