This is Pepper. She was Lucas's first pup (not including the ones he had growing up). She's a chihuahua/terrier mix. You can't tell in the pic put she has these super long skinny legs and this skinny skinny body. She's our fragile dog and Lucas's princess.

Then he got Bosco. He rescued both of them from the same Humane Society in Charleston, SC. Bosco is a chihuahua. He was about a year and a half when he rescued him. He had heart worms when he got him and had been through his first round of treatments. Lucas couldn't technically adopt hip until he had all of his treatments because the shelter was paying for them. So he fostered him for the first couple of months. I had to pick Bosco up from getting his second round of treatment. It was two shots, one in each him. It was the most nervewracking thing watching this poor little guy in so much pain. You couldn't pick him up, he couldn't sit down. It was awful. I was home with him alone that first night and I had to call the vet to see what I could do. The only thing we could give him was baby asprin and that didn't help much. His third treatment went much smoother.

Patch was my Valentine's day present in 2009. He's a beagle/husky mix. He's got a beagle face, short little legs, but a husky coat and tail. Lucas says he's our dumb dog, but he's just so lovable and cuddly. That's why I got him. We were doing long distance so I had Patch to cuddle with.

This big guy is Lobo. We adopted him this July so Patch had someone to play with. The two little ones are wrestlers or players. Lobo has separation anxiety and couldn't stand to be in a crate. He freaked out so much that he broke his metal wire crate and injured his snout doing it. We tried many different tactics. Got him on some meds, and now he spends his time outside. He loves it. When we're not home he's patrolling the yard, hanging in his igloo, chewing on all the sticks. He comes inside when we're home and sleeps on his bed at the foot of ours. He's a gentle giant and so calm (when we're home). He just hated being left alone.

  • Everyone's pets are so adorable and I love the stories. Salt, I love the tattoo.

Sir Whisky Sour is in my sig. He is 14 this month, but doesn't look it at all. I think he's going deaf though. Anyway, he is the most spoiled cat ever and I wouldn't have it any other way. I got him when he was 4 from an extremely abusive home. He was 25 pounds, scared of people, and trembled every time someone just looked at him. I spent months working with him and now he is the friendliest cat you'll ever meet. Such a dramatic change from when we first got him.

He's also very lazy, to the point that if he is playing with a toy and it falls off the couch, he won't chase it, he'll go to sleep or look at you and meow until you retrieve it for him. But he's very gentle when I play with him. H gets jealous because he only plays with me.

  • I don't have new pictures now, but Nimbus is a 13 year old Norwegian forest cat. He's gray. Samson and Delilah are about 4 and they're silver shaded Persians.

I just caught her on the bed in the guestroom!  On my white duvet!  Well I actually didn't catch her, but when I started walking down the hall I heard her jump down off the bed and then she ran out of that room and across the hall into my room and kind of threw herself on her dog bed.  Which infuriates me, because she obviously knows she isn't allowed on the beds, so she tried to hide it from me.  And then when I walked into my room and she saw me, she stood up and stretched, like she'd been there for hours.

I do not appreciate my dog lying to me.  No sir.

  • Laila:

She is my "Boxador" boxer/lab that we adopted.  Sad to say we are her THIRD family and she was less than a year old when we adopted her.  She is stuck with us now!  I get tons of compliments on her look, her behavior, so I really don't know what the other two families did to her but clearly it happens for a reason....she is our princess.

    Brady:

This is my foster Brady...although I do want to adopt him (need to convince the FI).  I got him from a rural shelter in KY he was taken from a guy since he was kept outside, not part of the "pack" he had been bitten by a snake, then was later hit by a car and could not walk.  The guy said he was "gunna take him out back en shoot em" so the volunteer at the shelter drove to get him.

She had to make a stretcher out of a car mat, he was laying down could not get up, was basically dying there - no food, couldn't move, in pain, etc.  After a month at the vet no other group would take him so our group did.  He has been in and out of the vet - no use of his front left leg at first but I have put a lot of time and effort into it and now he uses it.

    Lincoln:

Lincoln (Linker Stinkers) is another foster of mine, he is a Dane/Lab mix and is aways a 10.  Just a happy boy who craves attention.  He was basically on the PTS list (put to sleep) and our group took him as well.  I have some leads on him so I am hoping that Lincoln has a family for the holidays....if not then he is spoiled with us!

    Ziva:

Yet another little foster of mine who JUST got a HOME!!!!

She is my muppy puppy got her at 10 weeks of age, gave me a parvo scare (it was just coccidia, better than parvo but she was VERY sick) after force feedings, sub q fluids, vet visits, she got better enough to get her damaged eye removed, fixed, and back to being a happy spunky puppy.

I have more dogs that I have fostered in my bio under Furkids ---- /> adopted

Laila is my baby and I just happen to be a revolving door to give dogs a space until they find a family as a foster.

LOL that's hilarious. It's just practice for when your future teenage daughter tries to sneak out of the house!

FI forgot to close the bedroom/bathroom door yesterday after he ran home for lunch. Oz decided to take that great opportunity and raided our shoes. I got home to find three different shoes on our recliner and then 2-3 more pairs pulled off of our shoe rack and thrown around the closet. He had a GREAT time!

Meh, typical. Sabretooth is a sneaky bastard about being on the tables and counters and will jump right down and run away if spotted.

Cyclops will just give me this look like "But mom, why?" when I try to shoo him down.

Manda, I love that. I would love to name a pet after Colonel Brandon. The guy is undyingly faithful.

Thanks!  He looks like he has an M on his forehead which I love!  I'm trying to convince H that Theo needs a buddy but no luck yet.  Theo has been our only pet for 3 years so I don't know how well he'd take to a new cat anyway.

Theo is so tolerant when I dress him up in costumes.  I put a Santa hat and beard on him the other day. He doesn't enjoy it but he definitely puts up with it!

This is Roxy under the Christmas tree last year (she's assumed the same position this year).

We adopted her from the shelter (Manda - the John Acrum SPCA is now Charleston Animal Society :) The new place is amazing.)  H was sad that she was such a mama's girl.  She'd hang out with him, but as soon as I got home she'd come over to meet and sleep in my lap all day.

We recently bought our house and as soon as we were settled we went and adopted Jenny.  Luckily she's a daddy's girl.  They've adapted really well to each other.  We wanted Roxy to have a friend to play with and she and Jenny will sometimes chase each other.  They aren't quite at the cuddling stage, but they will sleep on opposite sides of the couch.

Here's H and I the day we adopted Jenny.  She's a gray tabby with a little torti in her.

    Yes and no...

Our group thankfully has the agreement you CAN NOT keep any of your first three dogs and no puppies (so they don't lose foster homes that keep their dog - makes sense).

Did I cry the first few...you betcha....do I still tear up sometimes - sure do!

BUT I can say that I have a ton of families that are really grateful for what I did.  I told one family if I cry I'm ok just being a little selfish, but any update from the families eases those pains.  I have been to "the back room" of a shelter and have had to pick who to save and who stays...it's heartbreaking so with that image I can easily give a dog over to get the next one "from the back room."

I get tons of cards, emails of the families bragging.  Some bring my former fosters to events to see me, or support our group so in a sense i have an amazing extended family.

Plus I love seeing a dog like Ziva just go from death's door to a healthy happy pup...she otherwise would have been euthanized.  I guess I love seeing them grow to a confident, healthy, happy pooch....

You saw her after picture here is her shelter pic:

You did the right thing!  He would have been passed up by a ton of people - just like the shy dogs at shelters.  Those places are terrifying for dogs and a lot of times the "mean" dogs are just scared (fight or flight)...
