Was there a gown you just HAD to try on?

Maybe it was out of your price range...
Maybe you had to travel to do so....
Maybe it was everything your mother hated...

Once you finally got to try it on, how was the experience- was it worth it?

Re: Was there a gown you just HAD to try on?

  • There was this one romona keveza dress I had to try on. Unfortunately it looked horrible in person and it looked even worse on me. Tried it on at Kleinfeld, which is where I got my dress so I didn't really go out of my way to try it on or anything but I'm glad I did because I had been drooling over that dress for months and I was shocked that it looked so much better in the ad than it did in person.
  • I didn't have a specific dress, but I *had* to try on Maggie's.  In fact, they were really the only line I tried on, bc I specifically went to stores that carried them.  And, not surprisingly, I got a Maggie.  Yes, it was totally worth it, because it was something I knew I really wanted.

Btw, my mom wanted another dress for me, which was my second pick.  It was everything she wanted.. but she isn't the one wearing it.  Mom came around when she saw the look on my face the second time I tried my dress on.
  • there was a Maggie I just had to try on.  it took 6 months before I found a store that would order it for me to try on.  it took another 6 months to come in.  In the mean time I tried on well over 100 dresses and none of then 'it'.  the dress finally came in 5 months to the day before my wedding and it was the one. :)  I am lucky we had a long engagement.
  • I had to try on an Elie Saab at Pronovias. I am not getting married unil Oct '11 and my mom was against me trying on any dresses until Oct '10 because she wanted me to "save the fun part". I am still saving my Kleinfelds experience, but I did go to Pronovias to try on this one gown. I put it on and it looked amazing! I even felt bad for the girl in the dressing room next to me because her dress paled in comparison. Then, came the price tag. At first the lady told me it was 9k.. my mom and I flinched. Our budget is closer to 5k. I tried on some other dresses, then went back to the first (amazing one) and tried it on with the veil. Even better! Then, the saleslady said she made a mistake, the dress was actually 12k! Ahh sooo disappointing. Needless to say, I still have a lot of looking to do.
  • Maggie Sottero Rasharna.

I called every store in Michigan, looking for it. Then I branched out to the surrounding states. Nothing. I did (finally) find one in NYC that I was thisclose to flying out there just to try on, but about 1 month later I found her! Not called the Rasharna, but another version- the exact same dress but w/out the polka dots. (which might be why the store said no when I called about a sample 3 months before?!? Jerks. lol)

Anyway, I still wonder if I would have liked it a little better with the polka dots, and the sample was 6 sizes too big/ really awkward, but it just didn't feel right. Too princess, not enough hottie.

I ended up with another MS dress that I'm modifying to add polka dots :)

  • Yup, and it looked beautiful in the picture but horrible on me!

I laugh everytime I look at this picture, haha!
    This is my dress:

  • Ugh don't you hate how big the sample sizes are? You can't tell a thing, even with the clips! It was so annoying. I lucked out at Pronovias with a few dresses I tried on because they were from the runway. I felt like I couldn't breath once they were zipped, but at least I had an idea of what it would really look like!
  • NBVitamine- I LOVE the gown you're going with!!!!!!!!  And wow- what a difference between the two =)

LOL- I can totally see myself swimming in some of the gowns I used to dream about.

  • Yes - Watters Bridal Tyler, So far cloesest gown is RK Bridal in NY or Pittstburg, so 4 or so hours away. A local philly salon said they should have it in the end of this month. If I love it then I will figure out a way to fit it into my budget as it's double my dress budget. Hopefully I can buy a sample or something.

I saw it online and fell in love. It actually is annoying me because now nothing compares to it and I havn't even tried it on and I know I really can't afford to.
  • There were a couple from Unique Vintage that I was drooling over, so I had to try them on.  (Thankfully, their shop is only about half an hour from me.)  The first didn't look right on me at all, and the second simply wasn't as pretty in person.  I found a dress at David's that was somewhere between the two in style.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. • Thanks Festiva!!

I agree with the others that it can be difficult to visualize what the dress will look like even with the clips, however, if you can't see it, chances are, it's not the dress for you.
I HIGHLY recommend trying on as many dresses as you can before picking the ONE. As soon as I put mine on, I just knew! (actually that picture was taken the first time I put it on!). I just felt so happy in it. The first one UGH, I felt and looked about 20 sizes more than I actually am! And it WAS the correct size!

So far, I haven't had this urge.  I have seen dresses in magazines and online that I LOVE, but none that give me the overwhelming need to hunt them down and try them on.  Some of my friends on the other hand have seen dresses that they desperately want me to try on because they love them, but they're not picking my dress, I am :P

  • There was a Pronovias dress that I had fallen in love with from the very first time I saw it online, but I could never find it in stores in my area (tried on lots of other Pronovias gowns in the meantime).  I knew I wasn't done looking and I had to try that dress before I could make up my mind so I went to the flagship in NY (my sister lives there anyway).  I put it on and it just wasn't as amazing as it seemed in the pictures.  My trip wasn't wasted though...I bought a different dress that I had loved online at another boutique in NYC!
  • Yes, I had to try on an Allure exclusive 2210 dress. and called around the local shops and they didnt have it. I went down the shore early on am (1hr and a half away) and just decided to kill time and stopped in a shop. They had it and i put it on and ended up buying it there a month later.
  • Yup.  Maggie Sotterio Rio.  I fell in love with it on the website and called bridal shops around to see who had it.  It was an older gown, but a shop about 3 hours away had it in one size smaller than I wore.  I fell in love and its my dress!
  • Yes! I was scouring the internet for a bridal gown and fell in love with a Winnie Couture bridal gown. I have no idea how I found it, but the nearest store was a little over 2 hours away. I LOVED it when I tried it on... but ended up not getting it because my parents announced they were divorcing and when I finally let myself think about my wedding again, the salon stopped carrying it.

Then I went dress shopping with my girlfriends on a whim and ended up buying this one:

Which I love so much more!
  • Yes there was a dress I had to try on and it ended up being the one I got.  I fell in love with it and it looked wonderful on me.  I take it as a sign that it is the dress for me because I don't need any alterations!!
  • I saw the Monique Lhuillier "Rihanna" in a magazine and fell in love with it. I tried it on at the ML salon and it was gorgeous but it was not The One. It wasn't right for my body type. I found The One at another store, but I'm glad I tried on "Rihanna" because I always would have wondered, what if?
  • It was definitely Maggie Sottero "Destiny"  I waited 2 months for the store to get the sample but IT IS THE ONE!!   I can't imagine my day without it!!  I tried it on first then tried about 6 others, NOTHING compared.  ONLY $899.  Good deal.

  • Yup. I've been drooling over the Michelle Roth "Maya" dress for the last year and a half. It's everything I thought i wanted, but ended up buying a dress that was the total opposite.

It was beautiful and fabulous, but wasn't an extra $800 of happiness in my book.
  • There was one dress - I had to call about a dozen different salons before I found it, and my mother didn't like the photo from the magazine.  But once it was on me, we both knew it was the one!  I just lit up, and nothing else would do after that.  If there's a dress you can't get out of your head, it's worth it to track it down.
  • I had to try on one by Alfred Angelo.  When I saw it in a magazine, it was my style and absolutely beautiful.  It was a wrap style, A-line.

It looked really good on me, but I tried on other dresses as well, and fell in love with another dress that was very similar to the one I had to try on - the biggest difference is that it went from A-line to ballroom.
  • I had a very small budget (less than $1000) for the dress, but just on a whim I tried on an Alfred Angelo dress in the Sapphire collection.  It was out of my price range but I just had to see.  It was HORRIBLE!!  I looked like a frosted cupcake.  The cheaper dresses I tried on were much better and I fell in love with a beautiful dress.
  • I also HAD to try on an Alfred Angelo dress from an ad I saw. It was hard to find in my area since no one carried the bridal line, only the maids. When they did a trunk show in my area I finally got to try it on it was beautiful! But not on me :( Totally wrong for my body type. I was so sad because it really was my dream dress. *tear*
  • I really, really, really loved this particular dress -- I can't even remember the line now! -- but it was out of my price range.  I thought about making an appointment to check it out...

In the meantime, I wound up going to a family-owned boutique in my small hometown, where there was a gorgeous modified mermaid from an obscure deisgner on a mannequin.  I'm 5'4" and fairly curvy, so didn't think anything close to a mermaid silhouette would work for me.  However, the dress was SO stunning, I just had to try it on -- even if it was just to rule it out.

TA DA!! Turns out that was the perfect shape and design for me, and I fell head over heels.  The dress from magazine ads I'd been worshipping quickly fell to the wayside, and this other "have to at least try it on" gown turned out to be the one!
  • I never got to try it on :(  I called every single store in the state that carried this designer and no one had the dress.  I ended up finding The One later anyway, so Im ok with it, but I am curious how it would have looked on me lol.  And what the price tag would have been.

  • I never respond to these, but I love the stories. I had to try on a Vineyard Collection gown. I saw it on the show "Say Yes to the Dress" and  was estatic when I found out a local salon carried it. It was outside my price range, but I didn't care, I tried it on. And it looked horrible on me. I'm short so it swallowed me, still a beautiful dress though:)
  • I HAD to try on the Blue by Enzoani Canberra. But no one had it, I called every where around me. Finally I found it in a small boutique just down the street from my house and tried it on. Fell in love and bought it! Can't wait to see it again in a few months!
  • LT1984;  keep an eye out for that 12k Elie Saab on the used dresses web sites, & on ebay.  you might find it for a more budget friendly price in the next year.
  • yea, and i wish i never tried it on! It was $3,500 over my budget. I fell in love. It was THE dress but i knew i could never affoard it. I cried for a week. I like the dress i bought but after that i knew i wasn't going to love anything the way i loved that dress.
