[QUOTE]I love VB, and the clothiness (is that a word?) of her bags make them light, so you can cram more stuff in them. I suggest having all the stuff you'll want to use on the plane in your 'personal item' and everything else in the carry-on, since you'll likely store that one in the overhead bin.  I like to keep books, socks (so I don't have to wear my shoes on the plane) and my little toiletries in the personal item under the seat<strong>. If you do decide to check a bag, be SURE to put your jewelry in your purse or carry-on.  </strong>I made that mistake once and had a bunch of nice jewelry stolen out of my luggage.

OH GOOD ONE!!  I was forced to plane-side check a bag and forgot that it had my jewelry in it.  Of course they lost the bag.  How they lost it between me giving it to them NEXT TO THE PLANE in Charlotte and when we landed in Knoxville is beyond me.  It had my jewelry in it and I was freaking out for 18 hours until it was delivered.  NEVER AGAIN!

I'm so sorry that you had jewelry stolen.  That is unexcusable!  Did you file a complaint with the airline?
  • Also, if you are carrying on, be sure to check sizes.  A lot of airlines made their carry on sizes smaller so my normal carry on doesn't work on most airlines anymore.  Talk about a pain in the butt.

I packed for two weeks in Europe in the winter time with a carry on, you can manage 3 days in the summer.  Summer packing is way easier.

<div>Yeah. That's why I pulled up the VB website, to check the size of the bag against the airline carry one size. It's about an inch taller, but hopefully that will be ok?</div><div>
</div><div>Thank you guys sooooo much for all the additional information. Last time I flew was about six months after 9/11, so security was tight but I don't remember things being so stringent about luggage and the extra cost.</div>

  • My only tip is to possibly reconsider your bag choice and go with a more traditional suitcase. Now that they charge for checked bags everyone is trying to carry on, and thus now they just end up gate checking bags -- especially on short flights/small planes. I just wouldn't want you to use that nice VB bag as your "suitcase" and then get there and find out there's no overhead space and it doesn't fit under your seat, and then have them gate check it. This would mean it'd go with all the other checked bags and likely get dirty, etc.

If you're positive it can fit under your seat, it's fine. But if you think it'd have to go in the overhead, I'd stick with a different suitcase/tote, or at least something you don't mind getting scuffed up and something that fully zips closed.

The gate checking is free BTW, and you don't usually find out about it until you get to the gate and they gate agent will usually make an announcement that due to limited room they are gate checking bags. They'll give you a luggage tag to put on your suitcase, you'll keep the bottom half and then you'll give it to the gate workers who load it on the plane and then it's waiting for you when you arrive.

I've heard they are going start charging at the gate now.   Now sure if that's true or not.  I've never had a problem getting my carry-on onboard.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Depends on the plane. if I'm taking a little embraer from KC to STL there's not a chance in hell my little roll-y bag will fit. They end up having to gate check them all. 737s and above usually aren't nearly as big of an issue.

It was an overseas flight, Boston to Ireland to Rome.  We didn't have a phone on us (right before you could change your phone over to using it interanationally) and I didn't really know who to call.  I doubt I could have gotten anything back - I lost a few costume pieces, pearl earrings FI gave me our first Christmas together, and my most favorite ring ever that was pretty much a one-of-a-kind piece.

We accidentally put our digital camera in our checked bag on the way back from Cancun 6 years ago and it was totally stolen (and all my jewlelry rifled through, but nothing much was worth taking). I was so upset -- not because of the camera, but because we now have not one picture from the entire vacation! You definitely don't make that mistake twice.

A lot of my friends who love to travel recently put up a pinterest pin about how to pack a carry on with enough to last you a week or something (maybe longer?).  I didn't repin it, so I can't really link it for you, but maybe a google search?

    <div>Thanks SB!</div><div>
</div><div>Unfortunately, that's really the only thing I have short of a huge suitcase :( I guess I will just cross my fingers and if I end up having to check it, it's washable.</div>

Yup, any jewelry, medications, car keys, cell phone chargers, money, and electronics should ALWAYS go in your carryon.  I used to work at an airport and know first hand the physical abuse luggage takes (as far as damaging electronics), but if it gets lost then you can really be up a creek ;) I remember being stuck in baggage claim getting screamed at because I lost their luggage.  Sir, calm down, yes our airline seems to have misplaced it in the massive airport that is Chicago during your 30 minute layover, no I did not fly up there to screw with your luggage and mess up your trip and race back here to see the look on your face, I'm sorry your phone is dead and you packed your charger, I'm trying to help, please stop screaming at me. ;p I don't miss that job..

It's also not a bad idea if you do have to check something, to have a list of the items you packed in the bag to keep with you (in case it does get lost, they'll have to ask you what was in it and it saves a lot of time), and putting your information on the INSIDE of the bag as well as the outside. Name tags and even airport tags can get caught in the belts and ripped off, at least when baggage claim opens it they have you name, what airport you are headed to and when, and a phone number :)

I always check out the particular airline's website for all their fees.  I think you can save a few dollars if you check in online and state then that you're checking a bag versus at the checkin counter.  If you can get away with carryon only, go for it! :)  Have a fun trip! :)
