Good morning!

Good morning!  I have two things to share this morning.  First, the chick with the crazy rsvp card finally responded to my page and said that one goes out to friends and a PG version goes out to family, as I suspected.

Second, I came into work this morning and there was blood being mopped up, all the way down this long entryway into the building I work in.  Apparently someone was mugged and carjacked this morning in the walkway to my building and had to run in for help, and there's still blood all over the floor and carpet.  Scary!!

Re: Good morning!

  • Morning..

The mugging IS scary. I hope the person is okay.  Yikes...

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Ugh, not a good morning. I have an injured husband and my car engine won't turn over because it's too cold.
    image
  • Holy crap, that's scary! I'll bet that woke everyone up more efficiently than a triple venti latte. Yikes!

I'm starting my day off well - the pups slept until 6. SIX! I was worried when they were up at 4:30 Friday-Sunday. Of course, the World's Most Expensive Puggle now seems to have an ear infection, so we get to wait for the vet to open to get an appointment. And then I get to go to work for Day 1 of the World's Most Half-Assed Week. Should be fun :)

  • Good morning!

A mugging is bad.  Very bad.  I take it you're not squeemish with blood?  My H would not do well with that situation.

We are not sure, but we think we were woken up by gunshots, or something this morning at 4:30 am.

I think the sound was too regular (like, to a beat) but I've never heard gunshots IRL, so we have no idea.  Welcome to the neighbourhood?

We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?

  • Oh no Arb, what happened to your husband?

I was afraid my doors were frozen shut this morning when my key wouldn't go in the lock but they eventually opened, so I had to come to work dangit!

  • Ew Danni!  That would freak me out.

I'm having a very work oriented day so far today.  Bleaching walls, cleaning the bathroom, vacuuming, dusting and mopping.  Phew!  Getting ready for visitors is hard work!
  • Bleaching walls?!

The stairs in front of our building were a complete sheet of ice yesterday because our apartment apparently didn't see a need to salt them, and he slipped on it, causing him to sprain his foot, knee and ankle.   So he's laid up for the next few days, at least.  Since we hadn't even started digging out our cars, his brother had t come over and take him to the emergency room.

  • Whoa, that's a scary way to start off the week.
That sucks, arb. Hope he heals fast.
  • Morning!

I was also woken up early this morning - nothing as startling as gunshots or a mugging, but Miss Priss the terror cat climbed up the trunk of the Christmas tree, got stuck and started yowling. I was torn between anger, hilarity and the sad-puppy-face because she looked so pathetic.

  • Good Morning.  It sounds like everyone is having kind of crappy starts to the week.  I guess Monday's are just good for that!

I found out last night my grandparents may not fly in on Wednesday because of ice we're supposed to get on Christmas eve.  I'm kind of bummed, I haven't seen them in like 2 years.

  • Good morning!

    I'm back from here:

H and I spent a fantastic week in Cuba! And now that we're back, we're a little suprised that the storm actually missed Toronto.

Not looking forward to the dozens of emails that are probably sitting in my work inbox.

  • Welcome back ring_pop!  That beach looks beautiful!

So at the risk of sounding like a stupid American, is there touristy stuff to do in Cuba?  I guess since we can't travel there, I somehow assumed it's all run down and oppressed like the news would lead us to believe.  So I didn't really know people actually vacation there until you said you were going.  Then I thought, well yeah that makes sense, other people from other countries can still travel there if they want.

Yeah.  Have to get the blood out somehow!
  • Hi Knottie Friends! Happy Monday.

YIKES on the mugging, Dani. That's scary stuff. My sister was carjacked and stuck in the neck (not really stabbed, just punctured where he was holding the knife to her neck) about 10 years ago. They were struggling in her car and thankfully a big guy pulled up behind them and got out and the asshole ran. It was terrifying for her.

I'm SO ready for this week! My best friend since kindergarten is coming over tonight with her girls to make ornaments and have pancakes (an annual tradition), then tomorrow night I'm finishing up my freelance illustrations (hopefully), then Wednesday DH is coming up for our Great Big W Christmas Celebration 2009!!!!!11111!!1!!!!!!!11!!santa!!!!111!!!

The only complaint (TMI alert!)  I have this morning is I'm cramping like a mofo, and if AF hits this week, when DH will be in my bed for a full four nights, I'm going to rip out my stupid ovaries myself! I'm so mad! Doesn't Santa understand that a girl needs her nookie!?
  • Good morning, ladies!  Scary about the mugging, Dani, and BOO! to lousy landlords who don't maintain safe apartments, Arb.

I am at my brother's house in TX for the holidays. Girls go to their father at noon today, so I will be child-free for the next few days. My brother is trying to put the pressure on my husband to fly here for Christmas. He's had a ticket since August to fly out the 24th and return with us the 29th. But that was with his old job, where he would only have needed to take off 2 days over that amount of time. With the new job, he gets Christmas day and either the 24th or the 26th off, his choice. We could change his return flight to early on the 26th, but he doesn't want to risk either a)the flight being late and missing a shift or b)being too dog-tired to work effectively. While I really admire his dedication to the job, I still miss him and wish he could come.
  • Morning all! Sorry to hear that so many of you guys are having a rough start to the week.

I'm enjoying my few days at home with my family. Today, I think I'm going to keep my mom company while she goes Christmas shopping and try to keep her from going crazy. Then later on I'm taking my sister and brother out for Indian food to celebrate my brother's birthday. Tomorrow, I take my sister to NYC to celebrate her birthday by going to see West Side Story. It's a busy and fun week.

  • Yikes, dani, and good morning everyone!  Ring, that looks beautiful!

I'm thrilled today--I finished my damn wedding invitations yesterday!  All I have to do is deliver the envelopes to my aunt at Christmas (she's a calligrapher) and mail them in early March and they'll be out of my hair forever.

I'm also getting really excited about Christmas.  This will be the first year FI and I spend it together and our family Christmas is intense.  I hope he has fun!

  • Good morning!  Wow, I thought my morning was bad but Dani, that's scary and Arb, I'm sorry about your DH :(

Our roads are barely plowed, but we're still expected to come into work which sucks.  And a lot of the guys that I work for will be pussies and stay home which means my day will be really long and boring.

We did get some fun snow, though.  I'm 5'7" and that shiit was past my knees!

  • Good morning! I'm at work and frankly a little peeved about it. The entire neighborhood around my house was a sheet of ice, so I slipped onto my arse about three times just trying to get to the train. Then there was no one ON the train. I finally got to work and I'm one of the only people here. Oh, and the guy who makes the call on whether or not we're open? yeah, he's in Miami. Bet that was a really hard call to make from your beach chair, wasn't it?

But in good news- at least I'm not flying anywhere today. Because I saw the airport mess from the train and it looked like a zoo!

We fly on Wednesday morning.  I am crossing my fingers, hard.  It's Kansas City to Chicago, though--we have zero snow here in KC and Chicago generally knows how to deal with snow pretty well.

  • Yeah, we fly on Christmas Eve, too...
  • Yes, there is lots of touristy stuff to do. Actually, tourism is their #1 industry, and they milk it for all it's worth. Their cities are really beautiful with old architecture, and they invest lots and lots of money in restoration of their buildings because of the tourism. (Lots of places are still pretty run down, because the restoration efforts haven't reached them yet.) Most of their most highly educated people are also working in tourism because that's where you make the most money - we had one tour guide who had spent 8 years in post-secondary education, and another was a former mechanical engineer. We spent most of the week snorkeling in the coral reefs, swimming, playing volleyball and lying on the beach, but we also made a day trip to Havana which is just an amazing city, and another excursion to go swimming in a cave, sailing down a river and visiting a ranch.

People are very poor as their wages are controlled by the government, but most find a way around it. The sense of community is unbelievable, as everyone has to scratch each other's back and trade favours to help each other out.

  • Good morning. I got to work like an hour late because my parking lot is a sheet of ice. Not fun and thank goodness this is a short week!!

Yikes!  If all goes according to plan, we'll be in Chicago before lunchtime on Wednesday.

How's Indiana looking?  We're actually flying into Chicago and then driving to Fort Wayne to stay with family.  Last Christmas was AWFUL--the whole city was coated in ice!

  • Cuba is beautiful.  Never been but I have never heard anyone say anything bad about it, except for the (local) food is bland.  Not much flavor or spice.

Dani, they have AI resorts just like DR and Mexico and stuff.  I think it's actually quite a bit more expensive to go there too.  I am sure there are sales like anywhere else, but just not as often or as good as Mexico and the DR.
