Book Club Voting

Re: Book Club Voting

  • I have a Nook, and I love it. I love being able to get books from anywhere, because then I can shop around for the best price. It was hard for me to grasp because I am a HUGE user of all things Amazon, but that one feature made the Nook more worth it to me.

I got my best friend a Kindle, because it is more user friendly for out-of-country use, and she lives in Panama now. She really enjoys it.

I think you can't go wrong either way.

  • I was finally swayed because books are super expensive in Chile (there's a book tax left over from the dictatorship), and English books are hard to find. I haven't read this much in years, and I'm loving it.

Anna, H and I have our Kindles on the same account, and it lets me send to my Kindle or to his. I don't know if there's a limit or if some books are different than others or if there are any other restrictions, but for two people we haven't had problems sharing books.
  • Pink - looking at that case, now I don't know which Kindle I have.  It doesn't look like that one or the one in the picture for the Gen 1,2 or 3 cover.

  • I wonder if I ordered that if it would be here by Saturday.  It would be good for the beach, I always worry about sand and sea spray.

  • I think the one in the Gen 1,2,3 pic is Gen 1 or 2; I don't think mine looks like it either, and I just bought mine so I assume it's a gen 3.

  • TR I think we have the 3rd generation Kindle

  • That's crazy, Em.  A book tax?  That sucks.

  • Ok cool.  Yeah, I got mine in Feb so it must be Gen 3.  Then again, maybe I'll just use a ziplock bag.  I'm cheap like that.

  • Yeah Bay, I don't actually know the history of why it was originally put in place, but it's always referenced as the reason books are so expensive. People really do not ever read for fun here because of it, and rather than buying books in college you check them out from the university library and photocopy them at the photocopy places on campus. No one cares about that whole copyright thing.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Book Club Voting : D'oh!  Well,  you may like it.  One thing I don't like is the long cord thing on it- I wish there was a way to detach that.  I also don't like that the Kindle slides around inside the bag thingy.  Plusalso, dog hairs get in there and then they're on my screen and I can't get them off.  It's static-y.

try wiping a dryer sheet over it?
  • But you COULD have the moments to stop and think, because you can just turn the power off for a minute.

  • I really want to know if all the anti e-reader people have actually used one.  I like books, sure.  But they are just so awkward to hold sometimes, especially when laying in bed reading, and my hands hurt after a while.  I just don't get how after trying an e-reader you would still like regular books more.

Also, I thought e-readers were dumb and a waste of money.  Then I started using the Kindle app on my droid and love it.  H has already mentioned several times buying me an actual Kindle for our anniversary, so I'm really hoping he does.

  • I'm trying to convince FI that a Kindle isn't a waste of money.  Hopefully when he sees me use it a lot, he'll get on board.

  • dnb- I've never used an e-reader and it's not that I'm necessarily against them (hell, I'm considering getting one now!) I just really like having actual books and turning the pages down and taking them to the beach and letting them get sandy and dirty without worrying about it.

BUT that being said...I think I may try it out and see how I like it Smile

  • Lauren, you can go into a Best Buy and try them out if you want, rather than just ordering blindly on Amazon.

  • DNB, I have, and I honestly don't like it.  It doesn't feel like reading to me.  I know that sounds stupid.  I can't really put words to it.  It's convenient and surely the pros outweigh the cons, but I don't like it.  I'm like an old person yelling about robots because their grandkid tries to convince them they need a computer.  I get that.  But yea...you kids and your robots.  You play with em, that's fine, but not in MY house.  Robot free zone over here.
  • I would never say I read a book that I listened to; I'd say that I listened to it.

I think listening is more passive than reading.

  • I would order one from amazon, they encourage you to try it out for 30 days, and you can return it for free if you don't like it :)
  • Oh man Robot.  I just ordered that one!  #fail

  • I have never been able to get into books on tape (or listening to books).  I can't pay attention to the plot if I"m just listening.  My mind wanders and I "lose my place".

  • Ok, thanks for clarifying.  I always just wondered when everyone says they like turning the pages.

The Kindle has definitely made me read waayyy more.  Before I started using it I probably hadn't read a book for please in at least 5 years.  Now I've read probably 10 in a few months.

  • Now that we've clarified the e-book vs real book issue, can we tackle the reading a book vs audio book issue?  Because I have concerns about audio book people.  Not like the people who read frequently but also like to have an audio book on for long car trips.  I mean the people who ONLY listen to books and then claim to have read them.  What say you- have these people read these books, or do they do the word "read" a disservice by saying so?

Ugh I hate listening to audio books. The narrators always bother me. I guess I can give people a pass if they have bad eyesight or reading gives them migraines or something.

ETA: I guess it still counts as reading it, they just annoy me personally and I don't see why someone wouldn't just read the book ourside of a car trip situation. Except when my FI claims to have read the first two HP books because he read one in high school and listened to 70% of the second one when we were on a car trip with another couple. It totally doesn't count for him.
  • I think listening to the book is the same as reading it.  It's not like you're watching the movie and claiming you're reading it.

I relate it to someone watching the movie and then saying they read it. But I've also never heard an audio book, my life isn't quiet enough for 1, and I also think I would fall asleep...
  • I don't care much for most audio books. My FI loves them and insists on listening to them on car trips. Sometimes I will listen to one during the day at work if I get REALLY sick of Pandora, but for the most part I find it annoying. I also don't really think it's the same as reading. You don't have those moments where you stop to contemplate what you've just read, to create a vision in your head, etc. because the story just continues. I find it dull.
