I wanted the name Ava to honor my Hungarian roots, for like 15 years now... and now that it's about time for me to have kids, it's like the most popular girl name. Boo.

I also like Kira. Or Kiera, I guess, but I like Kira.

I dislike most male names. I like Jack. I also like Holden, after the protagonist in my favorite book.

  • My mother's name is Ilona ( ill - lo- na). My evil gma on my dad's side insisted on calling her Leona, even though she was corrected every time. Mom stopped trying after about 6 years.

  • I wanted the name Ava too for pretty much the same reason as MandK. FI gave me a funny look and contemplated it for a second and never really gave me an answer on the name. Now it's extremely popular. Bah.

People spell/say my name wrong all the time. Granted it's Kristan. I'm used to getting Kristin or Kristen. It's when I get "Kristine" or Christian. Um really? Now if it was spelled "Kristin" I could MAYBE understand Kristine but there's a freaking "a".

Not sure I agree, but it was interesting helping her pick out names. Her first kid would have been Veronica Jolene or Ronald Joseph, either way Ronnie Jo. Ronald was it. The next was to be a Sam, so Samuel or Samantha. She had a girl, so she is Samantha Jolene. Or Sammie Jo.

My name is Samantha. My mom always calls me Samantha because she didn't like the nickname Sam, so my whole family pretty much calls me Samantha. All my friends throughout school ended up calling me Sam and I didn't really care. We didn't have any male Sams in our circle of friends so I never thought of it as a male nickname. My FI has always called me Sammy, and now his entire family knows me as Sammy.

From the people I've met, Samantha seems to be a much more popular name than Samuel, so I don't meet many male Sams. I actually don't know if I have ever spoken with a guy named Samuel before.
For boys, we agree on less common names, like Calvin, Graham, Jamison, and Simon. DH also loves Jacoby right now. I also like biblical names, which is kind of odd considering my stance on religion: Jonah, Noah, Paul. I like Ian and Ethan a lot too, but DH has shot them down. For girls, we also like less common names: Morgan, Ainsley, Meredith, Alison. Names that you don't think are weird when you hear them, but you don't hear them frequently. Since I'm Brooke and he's Daniel, we agree to lean more toward names like my own, hence the uncommon-but-not-weird bias.
    Posted by brookelynpaisley
Exactly! That's how my name is, and I like it that way. I've never had another girl in my entire school with my name, and I only ever met another Rhonda in college, and that was one of my professors. Interestingly enough, every one I've met since with my name has been a nurse, too. weird.

I love old-fashioned names for girls, and odd Biblical names for boys. J is not having any of it, really, especially my boys' names. I love Ephraim for a boy, but he hates it. I also like Ezekial (Zeke) in a strange way, but that most likely won't happen either. It'll probably be a mix of our mothers' maiden names since they both sound like first names.

For girls, I love the name Anne, but with our last name it would sound repetitive.
We do agree on Eleanor. I love that name and said he likes it too. I also like Meredith, June, and Astrid. He laughs at me, but I know we're gonna have a girl someday. I feel like that's all we'd have--I told him he's only producing x's =)
    image
  • I like somewhat uncommon names but nothing too odd. Old fashioned names are becoming really popular, I think Olivia and Ava have been in the top 10 for years in terms of popular baby names. I think for a boy I like Lukas or Trent, and for a girl I like Eve and Diana.

  • I like names that are sort of old-fashined, but have sort of made a come-back too. Like Ella, Evelynn, Jocelynn, Preston, etc. It wasn't my intention to have them come back though, Ella and Preston were my grandparents names and I had always thought about naming my kids after them, it's just coincidence that they are sort of popular now.

  • I'm still trying to think of a name if we ever have our Irish/Greek little girl. We've already settled on Jason for a boy. The Irish name I like for a girl is Eilish (eye - lish) but I don't live anymore in an area with a big Irish population. The Greek name I like is Persephone (Per - sef - oh - knee) but she was the queen of the damned in mythology.

  • Yay Connor :)

I like the names from books because I associate them with characters. Janelle, Titian, Glorianna, Cassidy, Lyrra, Gynnifer (yes I know weird spelling), Breanna, Arabella, and Aralia for girls. Daemon, Aiden, Liam, Connor, Sebastien for boys.

The only boy name H and I can agree on is Alexander Allen S. I threw Liam at him last night and he didn't like it :( Looks like Liam Sebastien will have to become a character in a book or something.

  • Oy. My H realllllly wants to name a son Khendon. Or Brogan. I could maybe see Brogan, but Khendon is out, for sure.

    For girls I like Isobel.

The tradition in H's family is 2 middle names after your parents/their grandparents. I just find it sort of weird. H's grandfathers are Joseph and Donald and those are his middle names, but his sister's middle names are Joelle Dawn. Not my cup of tea.
