Things I do not understand.

Re: Things I do not understand.

  • Don't let Koda hear you say that Eagles. I don't know when, why, or how secretary got to be such an awful word. When I was a secretary the office just about fell apart when I was gone, and that happened whether they called me a secretary, a receptionist, or an administrative assistant.

I saw a job posting recently for a "Waste Management Specialist" -- yeah that's a garbage man, guys. And it's a smelly job no matter what you call it!

Oh yes he did.  We all got a great chuckle out of that one.  Although to be fair, I think that was probably his actual title rather than something he just made up because honestly, I didn't get the impression he was that creative...or knew how to use a thesaurus.

  • The most irritating thing about it is that it changes nothing, except the number of vowels in our curse words. I have no immediate plans to stop saying shiiit. Or biiitch. Or fuuuck. Take that TK.

  • Flucking TK tying to censor us.

  • Our job titles sort of don't make sense.  See, we used to be called engineers, but then we were worried about liability and misrepresenting our selves in states where we were not licensed engineers.

Now I'm a "Staff II - Structures".  It sort of makes sense, but not really.

[QUOTE]IMO, titles are kinda silly anyway.  My boss is super into titles, and super into who's listed where on an email.  I guess if you are listed first on an email, you are most important?  I don't know.  I find it quite silly. My title is technically Legal Secretary, but I do so, so much more than that.  I'm the office administrator, IT person, runner, receptionist, paralegal, file clerk, etc. etc.  I run the damn office, basically.  I don't know of a title that would cover that.

  • Congratulations Sparent!

I don't understand any of the titles at my company.

Mine is technically:  Bilingual Individual Investment Specialist III.  It sounds way fancier than it is; I answer the phone all freakin' day long. The only thing I've figure out with the titles, is that the higher the number at the end, the more experienced and higher up in the company they are, but that in itself really doesn't mean much.

That's pretty douchey.  It's one thing for you to call your job dead-end, but it kind of stings to hear it from someone else.

  • As far as the receptionist/secretary/admin assistant stuff is concerned, I see differences between them.

Receptionist:  Mostly greeting people in the office, answering phones, etc.
Secretary:  "a step up" from a receptionist and does more clerical work in addition to the other duties.
Administrative Assistant:  Deals more with the interworkings of office stuff and has higher level responsibility/job functions than the other two?

Does that make sense?  And for the record, I truly believe that these positions keep an office running and that they are some of the most important people in an office.
