[QUOTE]Wow, merivale, that's terrible. I'd have some serious hate for a boss who told me to stop crying at my desk. And cew, I totally see where you're coming from with the policy. I think the reason why it upsets me so much was the delivery. If the boss had just said, sorry for your loss but this is the policy I could have dealt with it. But she was completely callous and told me to just get back to work because it wasn't possible. have a heart, woman.

That's just awful. I will never understand how people can be so heartless. I'm sorry you have such a shitty boss. :(
  • Seshat- This is just sucks. I came from a job that didnt collect for anything. Now I'm in a office of seven, and they do a lot. But most the time Marketing pays for it, or the CAA takes it out of petty cash.

But when I first started here I didnt join in with a lunch they ordered, and I heard about it for weeks. You're not part of the team, etc. So I started joining in and it was fine. So I know what you mean about the side-eye thing. You have to get along.

    These people do suck though.

  • I definitely understand where you're coming from. At my work (a school) people come barging through the door with an envelope looking for a donation at least twice a week. Now trust me, I'm the first one that will give but I'm typically in the middle of the lesson and no where near my wallet. They even make it embarrassing by marking next to your name on a list if you donated or not, and how much. I typically don't even carry cash on me and have to make sure the next day I go to the atm so I don't get the side-eye.

Usually they come around for deaths or illnesses in the family, but at the end of the year they were collecting money for students to have nice clothes for graduation and to be able to go on the Spirit of Philadephia lunch cruise. If you need to collect $50 for each of the 10 out of 35 students who couldn't afford it, shouldn't you find a cheaper trip?

Not that I was expecting anything at all, but it took two months and for me finally saying to my principal that I was busy wedding planning for her to realize I was engaged lol.

I'm sorry I hijacked your thread, but I understand your situation!

[QUOTE]Honestly, I think I would be ok being known as the bitch. If someone calls me on it, I would point out the ways I haven't recieved support when I needed it.

someone at my job started a rumor that i was having an affair with one of the guys who works in our copy room at which point i told her that if she needed to speak to me or about me, please make sure it is work related soooooooo this is me and i have no problem being the office b***h. as for OP, i'd only give $$$ is you really knew the person and wanted them to receive a gift from you. it sounds like it's a busy season for work-related gifts so if you skip a few of them (or all...it's your prerogative) i doubt anyone would notice.

  • Hi! I don't have much to contribute, except I'm sorry you're being put in this situation and I'm with everyone else, I'd give like $3 and call it a day. Take care of you first.

[QUOTE]Can you tell them that you already have something in mind and you will get it on your own? Then just get a card? Or you don't have cash. I don't most of the time, honestly. I hate that crap. My work bans all stuff like that. Like I didn't have a wedding shower or anything because we aren't allowed to solicit each other for money/gifts for showers or parties. People can't advertise their kids are selling Girl Scout cookies either.

We also have the soliciting rule, but they still throw parties. I guess it's "different." Thankfully, the last one we had was for my boss and the CTO whose wives both had babies almost two years ago. (Small office.) I'm almost certain they're doing something for me (which I don't even want) because the people who plan these things always ask about my wedding plans and when my date is, again.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: How much do you give? : I see where you are coming from, but depending on the size of the company, it's likely that they have a bereavement policy. It's unfortunate, but companies have to follow their policies to avoid unfair treatment. It's one of those things that sucks, but you have to have rules and guidelines to protect employees from inconsistent treatment. I recently had to tell an employee that he couldn't use bereavement time for the death of his aunt. It broke my heart, but if I allowed him to do it, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on when the next person wanted to take time away for a second or third cousin. He was allowed to take time off, but he couldn't use bereavement time. Again, it sucks, but guidelines have to be established and followed.

Yeah, when my uncle died, I had to use my personal time. Of course, my HR director didn't TELL me that when I asked for a day off. It just showed up on my paycheck like that.
