Wedding Woes

Mashed potato question

Do you use a ricer or a food mill to make your potatoes? When I make them for dinner at home or small parties I don't mind a few lumps. Normally my mom brings the mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving but she won't be coming this year so I'll be doing them. Since it will be more people, I really want them to turn out and I'm wondering if I should invest in either. I do have a mixer (stand and handheld), and get decent results as noted above.

    I just use a mixer.  Which I guess really makes them whipped.

    I use a mixer, and both my mom and grandma always did it that way as well. like them better that way anyway.

    I smash them with a rice paddle until they're at the consistency I want.

    I never realised how few people just go to town w/ a masher.
    Tha's what I do.

    (but I make 'em rarely.  I make 'em around the holidays just for candy, and I just pick out any lumps as I roll it out.)

    Ricer for fluffy ones...but it is time consuming.

    it's not that time-consuming.  you don't even have to peel the potatoes.  just clean, cut and boil, and then into the ricer.

    I use a hand mixer. I used my stick blender the last time I made them, because I only made two potatoes' worth, but that left chunks.

    i wonder what kuus would say.  probably something about using lukewarm water and then stirring them until they are mashed.

    What do you do after you rice them?  Just add butter and milk or do you need to mash or something more.

    The old school masher is just one more thing in my kitchen and it requires work.

    when they are riced, the potatoes are light and fluffy.  you add milk, butter, whatever after they have been riced, and you can do so with much less effort.

    I guess I'm old-school. I use a potato masher.

    To add you your thought about kuus, hmo: I'll bet she simmers them on low for 8-12 hours, at which point they just fall apart and mash themselves.
