  • I don't care how nice she is.  She's being called out by name because she lets herself bleed all over the damn floor.  That's disgusting.

I judge that. I am not a germaphobe in the least, and probably the opposite of one, but being that unsanitary for no good reason is just gross.

  • So has anyone seen the AE apology over on E by a "reg" who apparently offended a bunch of people?  If you're truly sorry for something that you did, you apologize under your own name.

Okay let me re-phrase. I judge people who drip period blood down their legs and around their house and call it "lovely" and then talk about it on the internet. I can't say anything about NickiVegan as a person since I don't know her at all. But I judge her actions.

No, Emily's right - the whole thing comes out - during childbirth the placenta detaches itself from the uterine wall and is delivered after the baby.
  • The cord and placenta are attached to the baby.
  • I confess that the lotus birth idea skeeves me out.  To each their own, I guess, and the placenta is expelled, so it's just the baby that's attached to it, not the mother, but I know some hospitals (including the one where my mom works on Maternity) have banned the procedure because it can be a possible biohazard.  They consider the placenta an organ, and they don't like the liability that comes with (sorry, no way to make this sound nice) a dead organ being attached to a baby for two to three days.

If you (general you) want to do a lotus birth at home, go wild, I won't judge.  It's not something I would consider though.

  • How does the placenta just detach from your uterus? How is it attached?

Well to be fair, Im assuming that Jcb thought the placenta was still inside the mother (since she didnt google it).  In which case, the baby would still be attached to the mother since the placenta is attached to the uterus by blood vessels.

So, I dont think it means she doesnt know how childbirth works.  It just means she misunderstood what a lotus birth was.

When the egg first implants to the wall, the placenta is what grows between the two, which offers a conduit for nutrients to pass to the baby.  It more or less grows with the baby. I think.
  • I bet people who monitor their menstural blood on a consistent basis also know how childbirth works. Just sayin.
  • Blue, if she thinks that the placenta is still inside the mother for any length of time after the baby comes out, that means she doesn't understand how childbirth works. I don't really see any way around that one.

I'm also really surprised how many people apparently share this confusion. I don't exactly think about placentas and umbilical cords all the time either, and I'm not TTC or anything, but I have a vague idea of how it all happens and thought that was pretty much general knowledge.

  • Nebb, the placenta is "birthed" after the baby is born.  The doctor usually massages the mother's abdomen and the placenta etc. comes out.

</div><div>I just see a link between people being disgusted by the way their body works and being ignorant of the way their body works. People are outraged that someone would be interested in their menstrual blood but they also don't have a knowledge of the basics of childbirth. I don't think that's a coincidence.
