Just Engaged and Proposals

Did you know the proposal was coming?

Re: Did you know the proposal was coming?

  • My fiance and I had talked about marriage off and on for a couple of months.  It even got to the point where we went to look at rings.  When my mother came into the city I jokingly asked her to come look at the engagement ring I had picked out.  To my shock the ring was gone, my mother joked maybe my fiance had been here.  Almost a month later my fiance and I went out for a drive and stopped on the boardwalk to watch the sunset. Now i was very suspicious that he was going to purpose the next day because he had dropped soooo many hints,  We walked over to the lighthouse and he put his arms around me while over looking the water. Speaking softly into my ear, he said, "Even before I met you, I prayed for you and since the moment I first loved you that love has grown everyday and that's why I got you this." He unzipped his coat pocket and took out THE RING.  I couldn't control myself and began sobbing tears of joy, after a moment I sobbed "No you have to say it!" at which point he knelt down and asked me to marry him all I could do was mouth the word yes and nod my head.  I was completely blind sided by the proposal he got me Tongue out

  • I had NO idea that it was coming... My fiance and I had been together for 6 1/2 years and he kept telling me that he wasn't ready to get married just to throw me off!  He kept this up for months just so that I would have no idea! It was so sweet
  • Oh I knew! My fiance is a very nervous person and he took me out on my birthday to an extremely fancy resturant and kept looking around nervously. I had an idea of what he was doing but kind of let him get more and more nervous until I was concerned he was going to run out of the resturant or pass out!
  • So, funny story.

The night before we (my fiance and I) were leaving to go on a beach trip with my family, my best friend came over to vent about her recent relationship.  After she got out what she needed to say, she asked me about the secret that my now fiance was keeping from me (because I knew he was hiding something, just didn't know what!).  I told her that my brother had regrettedly told me that it was a big surprise for my birthday because it was coming up in a couple of months, and I totally believed him.  My best friend then asked if I thought he was going to pop the question.  I looked at her and I said honestly, "I'm sure he's not.  I've decided to keep my expectations low so that I can really be surprised." (My fiance and I had been together for 4 1/2 years, so I knew he was going to propose, I just didn't know when and I really wanted it to be a surprise).  But honestly, I didn't think that it was going to happen because he had been having serious financial problems and job problems so I was just happy to be with him.  AND my best friend later told me that she had NO idea that my fiance was planning anything.

We take the 6 1/2 hour car ride to the beach and when we got to my grandfather's beach house, I noticed he was acting funny.  When I walked back into the room he was in, he stepped back and got down on one knee.  It was a total out of body experience and I was SHOCKED! I was so surprised I was speechless and he had to repeat the question hahahaha.  Of course I said yes :) I later found out he had been planning this for about a month and everyone knew except for my best friend, who he told as she left my house that night so that she wouldn't ruin the surprise. :)

He did what I never thought he could do, surprised me completely with the proposal. :))
  • He proposed to me on July 4th in Washington, D.C., during the amazing fireworks display. It was incredible! He said, "I have another firework for you" and he pulled out the most amazing engagement ring. I knew we were going to get married and I had secretly thought to myself that would've been a perfect place and time to get engaged. Obviously, he was thinking the same thing! The timing was perfect, too! He accompanied me on a trip to DC because, the next day, I was meeting up with a group for a three-week educational trip overseas. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect, romantic engagement!

I had a feeling something was going on,because my FI was going in to work early, quite regularly all of a sudden, and making a ton of phone calls.  Then for my birthday I was given a beautiful necklace.  Because I got the beautiful necklace, I figured that is what he has been planning on.   A month later,  we went to Disneyland for our 4 year anniversary of dating, and we invited along my parents and his parents.  The whole time we were planning the trip I figured it was 100% for our anniversary and a nice way to spend some time with our families.  Then on the evening befrore our anniversary, he has set up a private vieiwing area for the winter fire works show.  Our whole group was there, it was cold we were all drinking hot chocolate, and watching the fantastic fireworks display that Disney puts on.  Just as the grand finaly ended, and the snow started fallling in the streets of Disneyland, I felt a tug on my waist.  I turned around to see my FI down on one knee holding the ring.   I was so shocked all I could do is hug him.  I think it took me a few min. to actually tell him "YES". Now just over a year later, I am putting the finishing touches on our January 2011 wedding.
  • I was the one who proposed and I didn't even know I was going to do it until I did it (if you're wondering, I am the bride to be).  One day I just felt like our relationship had progressed beyond "boyfriend and girlfriend" (we had been together for 2 years at this point).  Ok so I didn't exactly propose ... I just brought up the topic of getting engaged ... we decided together that it was the right time and got rings together that same day.  =)
  • I had no clue we were going to get engaged.  He popped the question just after midnight on New Years this year and when we was getting the ring from his hiding place (between the top folds of our lazy boy) I just asked him why he was being so weird.  Then he was rocking back and forth on his feet and kind of acting strange and was telling me how he wanted to start the new year off right.  He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him and I tearfully said yes and then sorry for calling him weird!  My mom yelled in my ear when I called her and my dad told me he told everyone we were going to get engaged at Christmas and when it didn't happen he said he thought to himself, "Well one of these holidays coming up."  I just laughed and told him New Years not Christmas!  (Though my fiance later told me it was supposed to be Christmas Eve but his sister-in-law ruined that plan because she moved our family Christmas until the day after Christmas so we were away from our house earlier than expected to see my family.)  Either way I'm happy he asked and glad I accepted!
  • I knew that we were planning on getting married. I helped pick out the ring. It was on layaway and he told me he put a payment on it, but in reality he bought it. He carried it around for a couple weeks and then asked me. I was completely surprised because it was such a low key event (we just went for a drive.)
  • When we finally started ring shopping, I found one that I really liked, but I wanted to keep looking around.  I left the store, and he actually bought the ring at that time.  A month later, FI came to visit me to celebrate our 4-year anniversary. He made the dinner reservations, and I just went along. He arranged for a private carriage ride around downtown, and proposed at the end of the ride. I had no clue the entire time because we had just began to talk about getting engaged.  I thought it would happen several months later.

  • I knew it was coming eventually. We had looked at rings together and he knew which one was my favorite. The problem was that he kept swearing up and down that it would happen "by the end of the year." I was so sick of hearing him say that all the time that the night before he proposed we got in a fight about why he didn't want to do it yet and why it wasn't a big deal to him if he knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me! He just laughed at me and made me more mad. It turns out the ring was already ordered, was coming in the next day, and the previous week he had taken him mom and sister to see it at the jewelry store. I was totally shocked. He waited to call my parents until just before because my mom and I talk every day so and he knew she wouldn't be able to keep it a secret. I was totally blown away.

  • I had NO IDEA he was proposing that night.
We had plans to go to a bbq, and to see a friends band play at a bar.
All of our friends we're comming to hang out eat and drink beer and have a good time.
He was being sort of secrative that day but i didnt even notice when it was happening. Looking back i seen that he was sneeking around. He said things like "oh i gotta go get bob his cd outta the car" and was gone for like 20 minutes. Then more friends that usual decided to go to the show, like friends that usually wouldnt go out to a bar to listen to a pop punk band play music. Also thought nothing of it at the time.
Untill our friends band took the stage, and halfway through their set their lead singer, my friend Matt, came out into the crowd. Mic in hand and spot light on he started talking about love and how awesome it is that all his friends have so much love. Immediately I was like OMG MATT IS GOING TO ASK HIS GIRLFRIEND MEGAN TO MARRY HIM... nope.. not even close. He came over to me with the microphone and was like "Amanda do you have anything to say" i just stood there, confuzed. Then my now fiance, was like "I have something to say" and as i turned around he was getting down on one knee. I could have DIED at that moment. Microphone to his face and box in hand he asked me to marry him with a ring that had been given to him by his grandmother. A true family heirloom. I am the most lucky girl in the world. And ive never cried harder in my life! Another friend of ours was there the whole time taking pictures and capturing the best moment of my life to date.
Best surprise ever. Oh yeah and did i mention he did it infront of a bar packed full of mostly complete and total strangers? yeah AWESOME

  • I had no idea. My dad knew because he asked him and our two best friends knew because they date and he couldn't keep it from her. The entire thing was a surprise and I loved every minute of it. I have never felt like that in my entire life. We were at my family cabin over 4th of July weekend and a bunch of us were playing the bean bag toss game and he waited until both of our teammates got a bag in the hole at the same time and slipped the ring box on top of the bean bag that I had to pick up. He had the ring for 2 months or so before he proposed and it was hidden in our DVD rack right in front of my face the whole time and I never knew. He did a good job at hiding everything from me. When he went to pick out the ring he would say he was hanging out with his brother and I thought nothing of it. It's easy to say that you want to know when he's proposing but I am so glad it was a surprise it made the moment so special and I don't think I'll ever be able to re-crate how I felt at the time.
  • Ha.

We do things a little backwards around here!!

Ith & I dated in high school and loved each other so much, but he enlisted in the Army and after basic, it became a question of, at 17, "Do I love him or are we in love?"  He asked me to basically put my life on hold for 3 years until he came back.  I couldn't make that decision at 17.  I wanted to go to college.  I wanted a degree.  I made the painful decision to break up with him... we ended up in out own dead end relationships in the interim... I dated two diff guys long term (5 yrs & 3 yrs)... when he finally returned to the states he started dating a girl who after a few months he couldn't stand, but couldn't see himself doing much better with me off the market I guess (his words!!!).

Well, what happened between him & her is an EPICALLY LONG STORY for another time... I swear, you need 3 beers and 2 hours, it's highly appalling what she did to him/highly entertaining how we fixed it.  While he was in Afghanistan.. and I single in the states... he asked if we could please get back together and try again.  From what his mom told me, he was terrified to ask that and only did so at her urging.  I reluctantly agreed (Oh god, I have to do this Army BS AGAIN???) and we moved in together 5 months later (the 4.5 hr drive between us was awful).
A few months later, he seriously brought up the notion of us getting married.  I jokingly said "Is that a proposal?" and he said "Oh no, you'll know a proposal when you see it."

    ....

    .....

Well I'm still waiting for my proper proposal.  He could NOT afford a ring, with his car having just blown up (really) the prior summer.  So there was no surprise (we'd already discussed it) no ring (no money) no ordeal....

But.... in a way.... I eventually got a bit of a proposal out of him.  He's quite shy about serious things, so I'll take what I can get.

Maybe ONE DAY (He did send me a BEAUTIFUL ring... yeah, send... he's stuck in Cuba for a year)... maybe one day he'll sneak the ring away and surprise me with a proposal I'll never see coming....

OH if you only knew the whole story.... trust me, we doing things quite backwards around here, LOL!!
So every sweet with sour is tempered still that maketh it be coveted the more For easy things that may be got at will most sorts of men do set but little store. Why then should I account of little pain That endless pleasure shall unto me gain?
  • i knew when it was coming, FI and i went ring shopping, and i knew when he would get his next check to have all the money. that was a wednesday. we had a big plan for saturday- we were going to go hiking and have a picnic, he was going to propose there and we were going to my parents house after for dinner and celebrations.
well, he got the ring thursday, and couldn't wait another two days... i went to his apartment after work and he had champagne, flowers, and my ring! it was such a suprise!!

  • I had no idea the proposal was coming. it was Thanksgiving night and We went to Downtown Kansas City for the annual Plaa district lighting of the Mayors Christmas tree and downtown area with eighty miles of lights. Afterwards, He took me on a Cidnerella carriage ride with pi9nk twinkle lights and pink flowers all around. He went onj to say howmuch he lovedme and cherished me and how he can't wait til I;'m his wife, i areed with him also, but then he whipped out the huge beautiful diamond ring with twenty 1/4 carat diamonds around thecenter stone which was .66 carats!!! I cried and accpeted with a tearful yes. The guy that was driving the carriage began to sing congradulations to us while otehrson the street where yelling congrads tous as well. We went home to find out that not only did his mother know, but my family as well!! I will remember that night for the rest of our lives. We plan on being married November 5th 2011!!!

  • I had no clue!
I am a recent high school graduate, along with my boyfriend; who is now my fiance. We have been together for two years now and had both clearly stated that neither of us would be leaving the other but never said we wanted to get married. He is very practical and likes to plan ahead, so I had thought he wouldn't even consider asking until he had a steady job and was moved out of his parents house. And during this time i knew he was working on a secret "project" but i didn't know what and he wouldn't give me a clue other than it would be seven months from now. My mother and friends asked me if i thought the surprise was a proposal and i lauged and said "ya, right! not a chance."
BOY, WAS I WRONG! three months after we graduated and six months earlier than he planed we went to our favorite park then my boyfriend and best friend asked if i would marry him; and i was in complete shock!!
so now we get to plan all the practical things i thought he would do before he'd ask together, and i think it is so much better that way!

  • I'm not engaged yet, but my boyfriend CANNOT keep a secret! I already know the jeweller he's going to, he's asked and memorized the style of ring I want, and now we're just waiting on the money to buy it. He's not sneaky at all. He actually asked me about all of it, so he "didn't screw it up". He's so nervous about it, it's so cute.  He wants it to be perfect for me. :)
  • We never really had marriage in mind. All we knew was that we loved each other and that’s all we needed. Rick just graduated from law school in May and was on his way into a new career.  One day, this past September, I was sitting at my desk at work, conducting an interview, when my phone rang and it was Rick. Of course I didn’t answer because I was a little busy, but then my cell phone rang.  Figuring it must be important; I answered and whispered, “Hi babe, I’m in an interview. Is everything ok?” He said “Look outside.” And there, framed perfectly by my office window, was Rick; in is truck, with a HUGE sign on it that read “Marry me Marnie.” Needless to say, the interview was rescheduled!  Rick had told EVERYONE back in CA where we’re from, even the local pharmacist! And everyone kept the secret! Even my MOM! He picked out a ring he felt was perfect for me, and it is, and he is too. TOTALLY unexpected and purely magical, I said YES.......a million times!
    Marnie
  • My sister and brother each got married this past September. At my brother's reception, the question, "When are you getting married?" came up a lot. I told friends and family several times what Landon and I had agreed on: "We're not in a hurry; we want to take our time, so we will probably be getting engaged in about a year or so." That night, we drove straight from my brother's reception all night from Nashville, TN, to Cape Canaveral, FL, to board a cruise to the bahamas.

Two days later on a hammock in Coco Cay, Landon proposed. Until the ring was staring me in the face, I had no idea it was coming. Even through his adorable, rehearsed profession of lovel leading up to it.

My father, step-father, brother, uncle, and a few of Landon's friends and co-workers, had known for weeks! The ring was in a safe deposit box for months!

So, no. No, I did not know. At all. And it has made the engagement that much more awesome.
  • I was so surprised, and so was everyone else.  I did start to think it was going to happen within the year and became convinved it was going to happen in the summer when we were planning a camping trip because he was very into planning it and said he didn't want any friends, so I got it into my head that would be it.  Instead he proposed in March on the side of a mountain in Vail when we were on a trip with his parents.  I was shocked, so was everyone else, he hadn't told a soul that he was going to propose, no family, no friends, no one.  The funny thing was I was at the house the day the ring was delivered, when I asked him what package he got he told me a car part and went straight to the basement with it and I never thought twice about it.  I also thought he seemed slighlty nervous about the whole plane ride, because for someone as laid back as him he just seemed a little anxious, but it was our first time flying together so I never thought about that either.  Only later did I find out he was nervous because he had the ring in his checked baggage. Wonderful surprise though.

  • I WAS TOTALLY CAUGHT BY SURPRISE.  ALTHOUGH HE HAD BEEN PLANNING IT.  WE HAVE BEEN DATING OFF AND ON FOR THE LAST 3-1/2 YEARS AND HAD JUST RECENTLY GOT BACK TOGETHER.  WE WE'RE GOING TO NEW ORLEANS FOR THE DAY I HAD NEVER BEEN AND HE WAS PICKING UP HIS BOYS AT THE AIRPORT.  SO WE MADE A DAY OUT OF IT.  WE WE'RE SITTING AT JACKSON SQUARE JUST RELAXING AND ENJOYING THE SCENERY AND THE LOCAL MUSICIANS.  HE HAD BEEN WONDERING ALL DAY WHEN AND WHERE HE WOULD ACTUALLY DO IT.  THEN THE TRUMPET PLAYER STARTED PLAYING THE WEDDING MARCH.  COULDN'T OF HAD A BETTER QUE!!   WHEN I HEARD THE SONG I JOKINGLY SAID  I BET YOU WOULD RUN AWAY IF HE PLAYED THAT WHILE WE WERE WALKING BY AND HE SAID "NO  I JUST SAY I HAVEN'T ASKED HER YET.  BUT I'M ASKING NOW"  I FLIPPED MY HEAD AROUND AND SAID "ARE YOU FOR REAL!!!  "  AND HE SAID YES "WILL YOU MARRY ME"  SO OF COURSE I SAID YES THEN PROCEEDED TO CALL FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO ALREADY KNEW CAUSE HE HAD ASK MY GIRLS PERMISSION AND GOT MY 17 YEAR OLD TO GET MY RING SIZE FOR ME.  HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE.  AND WAS SOOOO SURPRISED MY GIRLS KEPT IT A SECRET.  Smile
  • It was totally a surprise! I thought he would wait till Christmas or V-day but he came down one weekend and had worked it all out with my parents and one of my friends. So everyone close to me knew before I did!
  • Just a comment about my best friend.  She had no idea when she was getting engaged but I knew for almost 2 years before it happened!  That was a long time to keep a secret from her, but it was so sweet and romantic when he finally proposed to her.  It was worth keeping from her when she came back from spending the day with him and her face was "lit up like a christmas tree."  Though I had spent hours waiting for her to call because I knew it was happening that day.
  • I had no idea it was coming.  It was so sweet and romantic.  We were on one of our usual trips to Pittsburgh to visit his dad.  We had talked about wanting to ride on the Duquesne Incline on Mt. Washington since it had been forever since he had been and I had never been.

So, we wanted to go one night, but it was raining, so we decided we would go the next night.  We had to go at night so we could see all of the downtown Pittsburgh lit up.  So, the next day it had not been the warmest, and at one point it had rained.  We were a little bummed that we might not be able to go.  So, we went to dinner at Primanti Bros. and then went back to his dad's.  We were there for awhile and discussing whether or not to go.  I said I wasn't sure if I wanted to go because I thought it had been raining at the Pirates game (they were at home).  So, Jason flipped the channel to the game, and it wasn't raining, so he was very persistent and said we were going.   I was surprised he was so adamant about going.  So, off we went.  His dad went too since he hadn't been in years.

So, we got to the incline, went up the steps, purchased our tickets, and went up in the trolley car.  I was so amazed and had my digital camera ready to take a million pictures.  We got up there and went out on the observation deck and I started snapping pictures w/o putting it on night mode so I stopped taking pictures for a bit and just admired the city.  People were coming and going on the observation deck....we were out there for a good 20 minutes.  We decided to go back in and look at all of the history stuff inside, but Jason said we'd come back out again before we left.  So in we went.  His dad was inside looking around and we joined him.  After awhile, we went back out to the observation deck, and there were a few people out there.  So, I had Jason figure out the night mode for my camera.  So, he gave it back to me and I started snapping away.  A few minutes later, he asked me to turn around to look at something and started talking about us spending our lives together (me not even realizing what he was talking about).  As I turned around, there was the ring!  The most gorgeous ring ever (which he picked out all by himself).  Then, he popped the question!  I started to tear up and I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever!  I was sooooo surprised to say the least!

We finally decided to go in and we told his dad.  His dad already knew (about a week or so before I did)!  I gave his dad a hug and I had the biggest permanent smile on my face the rest of the night and the next day.  We left the incline and settled in for the night when we got back.  I had trouble gettiing to sleep that night (no wonder)!  We called his grandma the next morning to tell her the great news!  She was sooooo happy!  I wanted to call my mom, but we were leaving that afternoon so I would just wait until we got home to tell her.

Best day of my life so far!!

*Did I mention, just this October we celebrated our 10 year anniversary!  Everyone was asking when we were finally going to take the plunge!*
  • Although we had spoken about marriage in the future I thought we were talking about another two years or so.  We had been together for less then two years and he had just gotten accepted to graduate school, so I definetly did not expect it.  I was in finals and was extremely stressed as I finished I asked if we could go to our favorite place (Carmel) and he said sure.  Apparently he had bought the ring a while ago but did not know when to pop the question.  He carried the ring with him throughout the weekend, he thought he would propose as we walked down to the beach at night time but I was too cold to give him a chance.  On our last day in Carmel we went and walked on the beach and we found a little bench where we sat for hours just watching silly dogs and talking.  I finally said I am getting cold let's go and he said ok., but first I have to give you something and I said Oh yeah?  As I got distracted and turned back to look at him I saw a sparkly ring just staring at me I could not believe what I could see or understand what was going on.  I turned to look at him and I knew then when I saw his lips trembling and his face pale as snow.  My guy is so easy to read I always thought I would know when that time came but boy was I proven wrong!
  • Absolutely no clue. I thought I was going to have to wait for a few more years...We went to Disney, I thought it was just for a vacation..work was stressful. We were having a private dinner at the Grand Floridian..and during the fireworks he got down on his knee...I don't remember everything he said because I was so shocked!! After asking him if "this was really my life", I of course said yes :)
  • I had no idea. We had talked about getting married but it was always "one day". Then we went to Costa Rica for a month this past summer (right after our 2 year anniversary) and it never crossed my mind that I would come back engaged.

The day he proposed we were talking about a friend of ous who had just got engaged. I said I wasn't sure if I wanted to get married in the states or out of the country and he made a comment along the lines of "maybe you should start looking into it". I shrugged it off because I thought he was joking. Later that night he proposed while we were watching a movie. He didn't get down on one knee and didn't have a ring with him...so i didn't know until the moment he asked me. He told me he had been trying to find a way to propose for months and that he was getting nervous about planning the perfect proposal...so he just asked.lol. He wanted me to pick out a ring so we did that when we got home. The hardest part was waiting 11 days until we came home to tell our families.

I'm glad that I had no idea and I loved the way he did it Smile

I knew it would eventually but exactly when, no idea. lol.
A month or so before the proposal, my stepmom slipped one day and called Cameron my fiance, and I was like my what? She corrected herself and tried to play it off...I didn't think anything else of it.
He came to visit me and my family in FL for Thanksgiving 2009 and during the week, he kept telling me that he had to tell me something but it would have to wait. I'd notice him talking to my friends and family on the side and they'd say lil codes but I was like "really", what is going on? Well the morning of Black Friday, Cameron told me that we'd need to wake up at dawn to go take me somewhere, and I was like okay (I'm not a morning person).
Needless to say, I woke up at 6 am like he asked, we drove to a nearby beach area and listened to a song in his car until he told me how he felt about me. He stepped out the car and opened my door, said how he felt again and got on one knee...I laughed [bcuz I saw it coming] but of course I said yes!
    Wink
I didn't tell my family until a few days later after getting the engagement ring resized..needless to say, the whole family knew it was coming, just not when. He had already gotten their permission. Smile

--Now, less than 2 months until the big day! <3--
  • I had no idea it was coming! He did so good! There were a couple dates that went by that I thought he might do it, but when those went by, I assumed maybe at Christmas he'd do it. But I had no idea 2 weeks ago that I'd be engaged! My dad video taped it, and you can watch it HERE... you can see how shocked i am haha. I was so shocked that I forgot to say yes at first hahaha.
