Getting in Shape

Losing Weight Slowly with Clean Eating/30 Day Shred?

I've been running like crazy, doing the 30 day shred and clean eating for 3 weeks and have only lost a pound and a half.

My starting weight is 134 so I know I won't lose as big a quantities as someone a lot larger, but still...

There are differences in my muscle definition and strength (maybe I'm putting on muscle weight), but I'm the typical woman who wants to see the scale MOVE!

Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Losing Weight Slowly with Clean Eating/30 Day Shred?

  • I'm in a similar situation, I was probably about 138-140 and got down to about 131 for my wedding (since creeped back up to 133...).  I was already a regular runner and did yoga, but I added p90x and that really helped me lose a few pounds and tone up.  I don't know how tall you are, but don't expect the scale to move that much since you're already at a healthy weight.  And, if you build muscle, you may end up gaining weight or staying the same, but that doesn't mean you won't look better or be in better shape!

I totally know what you mean about wanting to see the numbers drop.  But, really, it's just a number and not the most important thing in the world.
  • Honestly, weight is pretty crappy way to gauge health, because it doesn't capture everything.

Muscle is a more dense tissue than fat, meaning that 1 lb of fat takes up a lot more space than 1 lb of muscle, so I've your losing fat, but gaining muscle, well, as anne said, you might actually gain weight, but IMO, you'd be healthier.

I'd suggest trying to find a different indicator of health.  Start tracking your body fat (you can buy a cheap pair of body fat caliper on eBay, like, $2) or aim to fit in a certain size clothing.  Use your weight as a general guide (if it starts creeping up, you want to be aware) but don't let it rule you.

FWIW, while doing NROL4W I only lost about 2 lbs on the scale, but I dropped nearly 14 inches and 4% body fat.  Yes, it was frustrating at times to see the same number on the scale over and over, but I'm a much healthier person that I was back in January.

  • I agree with PP. (I WISH my starting weight was 134!)
  • I did some dieting and the shred for a month and a half now and i didnt lose any weight, but i lost a LOT of fat and gained A LOT of muscle. I'm smaller and way more fit but weigh the same. Remember that muscle weighs a lot more than fat and when you're in the under 150 lb range dont expect to lose 10 pounds without gaining muscle. Dont pay attention to the scale.
  • Thanks everyone!  I feel my abs and arms are firmer and more muscular already.  Guess I just have to be patient with the #s for the next few months.

  • Oh, I meant to add too, start tracking your measurements.  It makes it a lot better when you can see those numbers going down if the scale has stalled.

  • I would also recommend doing measurements of your waist/hips/thighs (arms if you'd like). This can show you that you are losing fat and gaining muscle, which would make sense if you aren't seeing much change on a scale.

Example: I lost 6 pounds on the scale, but 6 inches on my waist and 3 on my hips. I was actually much more excited to see the change in inches rather than weight.
