Well.

My first day went pretty well. Things went pretty smoothly for there not being a single lesson written for today. Since she hadn't planned on the baby coming this early, there was nothing prepared for today and the next two days, but we are supposed to talk tonight about that. I don't mind preparing lessons, I just don't even know what they are doing in each subject.

My one highly troubled student only had one temper tantrum and he calmed down pretty quickly. There were really no other major problems, and I did expect a few. They talked A LOT, but hopefully that will die down because I'm assuming they're just seeing how far I will let that go, which is not far. I has tons of support, which is really helpful. I got accidentally observed by the state (she didn't realize I was a sub!) and got a good review, lol.

Anyway. That's my day in a nutshell :) Now, tell me about yours.

Re: Well.

  • Yay! Congrats on a day gone well! It's been a pretty busy day here on E. Lots of posts by new posters, which I like. I've not really been all that productive today at work :/

  • I woke up, texted you, worked out, did some laundry, did some dishes, showered and have been in my pjs since noon.

Glad you had a good day!

  • Lauren, what do you do? I'm trying to convince FI we need to leave out of NOLA for our cruise, but he wants to leave out of Mobile. Which is a longer drive. He thinks NOLA is bad ::rolls eyes:: I see tons of new posts and posters! Goodness.

  • I'm glad it went good Whit.  It's always great to get that first day out of the way.
  • Sco, how's J feelin?

  • I picked up 4 books at the used bookstore.  2 were from my "to read" list on good reads so that was awesome.

My cat actually ate this morning so YAY.  Looks like he'll live.

I'm down another pound as of today (HOORAY!)

I'm at work and can't watch the Olympics (boo)

He's been in bed all day. Literally. He hasn't gotten out of bed since early this morning when he decided not to go. He's feeling really crappy. And I think he's a little depressed about the upcoming surgery :(
  • I'm a paralegal for a law firm that does mineral rights work. We don't have any pressing deadlines, so it won't be terrible catching up for my knotting/online shopping day.

NOLA is bad if you hang out in the Desire Street Projects, or if you try to buy crack at Sixth and Barrone. It's like any other major city: don't be stupid about what you're doing and where you are, and you should be just fine. It's a huge tourist town, and for the most part, tourists don't have problems. Please direct your FI my way if he needs further convincing :)

  • Ooh what books did you get wading? I so rarely buy books, the library can order almost anything for me. Nebb just bought me the Dark Tower series, so I'm super excited to start those. YAY for your cat eating, WOOT for losing a pound, and BOO for missing the Olympics. Though I will say, I haven't watched a single second of them.

    Sco, poor guy.

  • Haha Lauren, I will. We won't even be leaving our cars there if that's the port we choose, we'll take the train because it's way easier and way cheaper.

FI started reading that series right at Christmas. He is obsessed. I've heard really great things about Dark Tower.

Leave out of NOLA. The port is much easier to get to and its just a much better city, atmosphere wise. Plus, if you have time you could explore the city a little. The port isn't in a bad part of town, and it is fairly easy to find/ good hotels around it.

EDIT: Lauren is wise. Don't go into the bad parts of NOLA and you should be fine.

  • I picked up a bunch of series mysteries:

    Blue Blood (Susan McBride)
    Hounding the Pavement (Judi McCoy)
    Corpse Pose (Diana Killian)
One for the Money ( Janet Evanovich)

  • LVB, IF (BIG IF!) Shane can get off the Saturday after the wedding AND the money works out, there is a Norwegian cruise (I think) to the Bahamas, 4 nights. I don't know all the details, I'm making him deal with it :D

I love the Crescent City Express. I'm assuming that's the train you'll be taking? It goes all the way the Chicago. I took it on a high school trip and train rides for long distances are way underrated, IMO. Yeah, and not having to leave your car is a definite plus.

  • Wading, I love Janet Evanovich for mindless chick lit. I haven't read any of the other authors.

Good to know Lauren! I've heard tons of good things, so I can't wait to start it. I have to get through the Ted Dekker series I'm reading right now, then I'll move on to the Dark Tower books.

mags, I know, FI is being sooo weird! We have had tons of friends leave out of NOLA, but one guy we know did have a bad mugging experience and now FI is being paranoid.

  • Thanks mags! I *think* that's the one, but my mind has seriously not been on the cruise at all, I'm way more concerned about getting these last minute details taken care of.

Lauren, that might be it, it leaves out of a small town near us, but I do think that's it because I have heard you can go to Chicago on it.

  • Neckie, totally off topic but I'm making cheesey meatloaf for dinner tonight. Did you still want the recipe?
  • Moose, I loooove Janet Evanovich One for the Money and subsequent "number" series. My mom & I have read all of them. You will get hooked!

  • I guess I'm one of those new posters, but I do lurk a lot Smile

OP, are you a long-term sub?  I'm subbing too--I'm a music teacher and had a long-term job for the first semester of this year, and now I'm back to day-to-day subbing...oh, joy.  That's awesome that you have that position, though!

Ok, sorry for jumping in and changing the subject--please continue the cruise conversation! Have a great afternoon, everyone!
  • I'll send it to ya in a bit. J just said he didn't want to eat dinner (he hasn't eaten all day). Hmm... wonder what I'll have instead...
  • Yay!  Glad it went well.

I've heard good things.  The books are all first in a series kind of books.  I don't know why, but I LOVE a series of books with the same characters.  I mean, I've read all 30+ books in the discworld series.  Imagine if you combine a series with my favorite genre:  Mystery.  Woot.

It could be as bad as Alix and Twilight!

  • Whit- My day was pretty similar! I'm now subbing for a woman on maternity leave and had her baby 5 weeks early. I knew I was going to be subbing for her, but not this soon and I didn't have any transition time or anything. Anyway it's been 2 weeks now so I'm getting in the flow, but the first few days were hectic. I'm still a little frazzled because I don't want to bother her with too many questions since her baby is still in the hospital and will be for a while. I also don't know her "system" and although she's very organized I can't find anything in her room. I didn't get observed by the state though :)

  • Hi saxy! Yep, today was my first day. I just graduated from college in December and this job totally fell in my lap, so I worked in a library for a few weeks after graduation, and now here I am! I'm so thrilled, out of all my friends that I graduated with, only one other has a job/long term sub job.

    Thanks sco!

Wading, if you like series with the same characters, you have got to check out the Myron Bolitar series by Harlan Coben. They are awesome!!!

    http://www.amazon.com/Harlan-Cobens-Myron-Bolitar-Order/lm/R5GMXELIXF0KV

tlv, my teacher is ridiculously unorganized, so I spent a good amount of downtime cleaning things up and rearranging. It was giving me a panic attack, I can't stand such disorganization!! If she had her baby that early, how long will she be gone?

  • Thanks for the recommendation.  I'll add that to my list of books to look for.
