Getting in Shape

Boot camp and I don't mean military boot camp...

I was thinking a good way for me to jump start my weight loss (I need to lose some serious pounds before I get married next year) would be to join a 3x a week 4 week long boot camp that my park and rec offers. I'm of course going to work out on my own first (don't want to be the one fainting the first day) for about a month in a half before I join the boot camp class, and I was also thinking about doing yoga once a week. My biggest thing is I need to stop eating carbs and drinking soda (it's like a drug, every day at the same time I need a coke) but I'm not sure what the best way to go about cutting carbs out of my diet would be ... I've known people who have done the carb-free diet and have actually become sick ... And I was wondering if anyone on here has tried the carb-free diets? and how did they work for you?

  • It seems to be a pretty heavy consensus on this board that cutting out ANYTHING will not only be terrible for you health wise, but usually ends up leading to cravings and binges (the opposite of what you want ;-) ). The boot camps that are offered at my gym come with meal plans, and keeping you on a balanced diet.

However I have been doing weight watchers, and it is the popular choice of knotties. You can post with them in the accountability threads. It is truly the only "Diet" I would suggest, but it really has more to do with learning to eat healthy and portion sizes.

    Good luck!
  • Carbs aren't evil.  Our bodies need carbs to function.

Now, not all carbs are created equal.  Cutting out processed carbs (like white flour and refined sugar) is a good idea, but there's no need to cut out whole grains and things like fruit.  Making smart choices about what you eat is much better than willy-nilly cutting things out.

As for the soda, cutting that out will likely do wonders for you.  If the thought of going cold turkey is just scary, scale back slowly.  If you're always craving a Coke at the same time of day, start by going down to 3/4 of a can/bottle for a week.  Then go down to 1/2, then 1/4, then just stop.

  • ditto pps - cutting carbs entirely will harm your body, but making the right choices on which carbs you eat will actually help you feel more energized (and so will cutting out pop - that stuff seriously is an energy drain).

if you've got a caffeine dependency, i would suggest replacing the pop everyday with a cup of green tea - it has caffeine in it, and has been shown to boost your metabolism (just don't add a ton of sugar!)

as far as the boot camp goes, i did one and it was great! since you're prepping for it, make sure you can handle some pushups (all bootcamps are different though, this is just my suggestion) and situps and some strength exercises. and while you're taking the classes, try to write down the exercises you do afterward, so you can replicate the workouts at home when the class ends. good luck! :]

  • I see you're in the DC area...just tip:

On Groupon Today, you can buy a month of unlimited bootcamp classes from $45 (regularly $140).  Not sure if any of the locations are near you, but I'm pretty sure I'll be buying it today!

And ditto what the othres said - don't cut carbs completely.  Switch to whole grain, and get rid of the refined carbs.  But I would try to get off the soda if I were you - raynes idea sounds like a great way to try!
