Do you like your first name?

(Stolen from the nest)

So we spend a lot of time talking about last names here, but what about your first? Would you change it if you could?

I love my first name (Ashton). And I abhor being called Ashley by mistake which happens quite often. When I was job hunting I also got mistaken for a guy quite a bit, fun reactions when I'd walk in for the interview. Our pastor also asked if we were having a same sex union when FI emailed her the first time and told her our names. I think I like catching people off guard with it.

Re: Do you like your first name?

  • I do love my first name (Tamra) however, it is spelled differently, and I hate getting called TamAra or Tammy.

I went to school with a girl named Afton. Do you ever get mistakenly called names like that too? lol

  • I get told all the time that my name is nice, but I personally think it's a pain in the a**!  My first name is Yasmin but people always say Jasmin and when I tell them, no, it's Yasmin with a "Y", they try to correct me and say Jasmin again.  It's also hard for some people to understand when I am saying my name, like if its over the phone and the connection is bad or if it's in a loud area.  They always think I am saying something like Nancy or I end up having to spell it out for them.

  • I love my name. Krystle...its a different than the traditional spelling and that's because my mom was in recovery and my dad just spelled it the way he thought it sounded. They'd had a bet mom just knew I was going to be redheaded and clearly I'm brunette. If I was a redhead she was going to name me Dana Leigh. If not daddy got to pick my name so here I am. Krystle. I'm glad he got to name me. He named me after Crystal Gayle not sure if I spelled it right the lady that sang don't it make my brown eyes blue...because he loved long dark hair and hers was floorlength lol. I wouldn't change my first name for anything in the world its like the only thing I have left that he gave me.

  • My first name is Amy and I've always loved it. My last name is 9 letters long and tricky to spell, so it's nice having a short and easy first name that normally doesn't need to be spelled out! I don't think there was ever a time I wanted a different first name. There weren't many Amys where I grew up and I liked that it was relatively unique among my classmates.

I do really like my name...It took a while to accept it. It's AImee. I always wanted something cool and exotic. I also HATE when people spell it Amiee or Amy or anything by mistake. And I hate the "oh, that's a unique way to do it" But I love my name.

  • Eh, Amanda is really common.  I had a class of 12 in college and 3 of us were Amandas.  My friends called me Mana after hearing my niece and nephew calling me since Amanda was too long for little kids to say.  I answer to that more than Amanda most times.  FI calls me Manda... HATE MANDY

  • My name, Nicole, just seems so typical of the 80's!  I don't hate it, but it was so popular when I was born.  Growing up, I always had at least 1 other Nicole in most of my classes...one year there were 4 Nicoles in my class...3 of us were Nicole Marie LOL!

I hate when people spell my name Nichole, Nicolle, or, the worst, Nicholle!  LOL

ehh my name is Maria, its ok, its a typical Italian name...i'm named after my mother's mother, which is an italian tradition, im the 2nd born, so im named after my mom's parents: Maria Giovanna. Giovanni is my grandfather's name....
It gets annoying at family parties when there are 10 different Maria's and then we all have to be signified by our middle name (my GM is Maria Innocenza, by mom is Maria Cristina, my cousin is Maria Innocenza, Mariantonia, Mariaconcetta etc etc)
I do love my full name which is Maria Giovanna, but no one really calls me that, i wish my mom would have named me Giovanna Maria but what can you do...

Edit: i hate when people call me MariE or when they sing "i once met a girl named Maria" right after they ask me my name!!!
  • My first name is Katie and I like it. Only problem I have is that people always assume Katie is short for something. In school I would get letters with Katherine on the envelope. Or when people ask for my full name and I say "Katie", they reply with "Katie? Or is it Katherine? "

    No folks it's just Katie!

  • My first name is Stephanie. Works fine for me except as a child I got the obligatory Step-on-me. Whatever! And Aimee, if it makes you feel better, I know a lot of girls with that name. It's the French way to spell Amy and I am French. Went to high school with 6 Aimee's.

  • My name is Amy and in my area it was in the top 5 names for girls the year I was born so I went to school with SO many of them (there were 6 of us in my grade 9 gym class!). I do like it, but I hate it when people spell it Aimee, Amiee, etc. I also hate it when they ask if it's short for Amanda.

  • I like my name, Sarah, I think it's classic and I like the spelling much better than Sara. I hate when people spell it without an 'h', it just looks so incomplete. Only downside is that it's such a common name! My middle name, Elizabeth, is also very common. I've even met a few other Sarah Elizabeths. But I think the two names sound really nice together, so I can forgive the fact it's so common.
  • I love my first name, it's Karianne.  I've never met anyone else with that name, and even those I've HEARD of with the name, it's always spelled different.  I love my spelling too :)

  • My name is Jenn. (yes with two Ns). It's short for Jennifer. I don't mind Jennifer, but I don't respond to it. The problem now is my new boss at the restaurant keeps calling me Jennifer, and my boss at the learning centre insists on calling me Jennifer (even though she calls my mom Kathy, and her full name is Kathryn) and it's starting to annoy me. But more than anything, I absolutely HATE being called Jenny. And my new bosses at the restaurant keep alternating between Jennifer and Jenny. I try to correct them but they run by me so fast I can't get a word in.

    I love my name but I'm constantly correcting people. My name is Jeannie and people are always calling me Jean or JeanMarie. They cant accept that my legal name is Jeannie. My mom told me when I was younger she would let me legally change it bc I could NEVER find my spelling it's usually spelt Jeanne or Jeanie etc but I'm glad I didn't do it. I like being unique ;

  • Nope! It's way too common. Actually both my middle name and last name are SO common too. Plus, people always spell it wrong. It's brittNEY, not brittANY. People do that all the time when they talk to me on here! But, I really don't mind much. My mom named me after a character on her favorite soap!

  • I was almost Nicole but my aunt wanted that name IF she had kids. So my uncle scalped it up. I became Michele <----notice the one L. Yea, people are always spelling it wrong. My mom told me she wanted to be different (lots of Michelle's in the 70's I guess). I like the spelling. Although one professor did make fun of my name and how it really should be pronounced. Ah, whatever, he was a weirdo! LOL!

    Interesting thread

I never liked my name growing up. I thought Ana was too short and really boring but now I actually  like my name although people always spell it Anna
    :)
  • My first name is Christina.  I like it.  I don't go by it but I like it.  I do hate that everyone chops off the last "A" and call me Christine.  I love the name Christine but it's not me. I tend to go by Christi.  I figure if people are going to cut off the end of my name, they can cut it to where I like it. I never had a problem with other girls in my class having my name.  I think there was one other Christina in my graduating class but she always went by her middle name.

Nic-my FSIL is Nicole Marie also.  She doesn't get the whole "putting an H in".  I think professionally she uses Nicole but I know her as Niki.

  • Eh, I'm neutral on mine, lol.  It's Nancy.  As the story goes, I was supposed to be either Amy or Carolyn from early on in the pregnancy.  When it was time for the birth certificate, my father wanted to name me Nancy.  Soooo, I always wondered...who the heck am I named after?  LOL.
