I thought we were talking about actual Church teaching. Agape quoted the Catechism...what more do you want? (our own personal opinions are another story...)

I have not been arguing with agape.  In fact, both of us have agreed with each other in this thread.  I mentioned what JPII said, and I looked up the definition of the Hebrew word for murder.  If that's too much personal opinion for you, I don't know how anyone can have a conversation on this board.

Sorry, I hope I didn't sound snarky, but I was responding to where you said, <div>"<span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:12px;background-color:#ffffff;" class="Apple-style-span">I don't believe that I've ever read an official position from the church regarding the death penalty,"</span><div><div><span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:12px;background-color:#ffffff;" class="Apple-style-span">after agape had already posted the catechism quote.</span></div></div></div>

How about this quote from the catechism?

2267. Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.

If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity with the dignity of the human person.

It does not say that the Church is against it, but it also does not say that it is for it.  If anything, it seems to be more against it than for it, but no sweeping generalization is made.

The last paragraph from 2267 also says:

Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically non-existent."

I know he's not Catholic, but Chuck Colson is Christian, and he started the Prison Fellowship.  If you ever read his writings, he talks about prisons around the world where prisoners start Christian ministries, and the overall atmosphere of the entire prison becomes more peaceful.  I am not endorsing releasing people who have committed horrible murders to society, but I think that life in prison is adequate punishment and allows for the potential of redemption of criminals while still on Earth.

(And, as PPs mentioned, there are so many people who are unjustly or falsely convicted, can we risk their deaths?)
