Distracted driving

Re: Distracted driving

  • I have a hands free device so I will answer calls from my family members and occasionally if I'm short on time I'll make calls while driving.  I'll check text messages at a red light but I don't actively send texts while driving.  I know I'm far from being that coordinated.
  • I use my cell phone. I also used to text until I realized that was really dangerous so I don't do that anymore. I watched a video about D&T that pretty much made me give it up.

I would text and drive. I voted text and talk but it was more texting since I hardly talk on the phone but if i were to have a phone call I'd pick it up. I used speaker or a head set. and with texting I would be able to text and not look at the phone as I wouldn't read long texts or wait for a red light or stop sign to read.
Now that I have a touchsreen I will NOT be texting while driving unless stopped at a light or sign. I can't do that yet and I won't until I am able to text and not look. It will take me a while to get this down. So I'm ok with that.

I seen this on the news a while back where they had cons set up and had teenagers text and drive to see how aware they really were. So my brother in law (afte I came back from Ky) did this at a local parking lot and had me texting and driving set up trash cans and different objects (as cars or people) and I past!! On the news cast they failed! I had to laugh. But again it was with a non-touch screen phone and I used t9 and was very good at texting without looking.

edit- It also depended where I was. I wouldn't text while in a busy area or school zone. I would make sure I was very aware of my surroundings.

  • I have limited my texting while driving since I've gotten touch screen phones because it requires alot more concentration than flip phones. I am guilty of talking on the phone though. I regularaly miss parts of the conversation because I'm concentrating more on my driving however. I won't use the phone if I'm driving through an area that requires extra concentration.

I know it certainly isn't in Alberta, FI and I have been a couple of near misses, and they're usually people on cellphones. It is in Ontario.
  • I do admit that I've texted behind the wheel before - but it's so terrible, and I haven't done it in a long time.  In fact I've stopped pretty much all together.

I do talk on my phone too, but it's usually when I'm on a long drive somewhere.  Not that it makes it any better.

It infuriates me when I see people texting while driving.  When I was in Cali earlier this month we saw a lady texting on her blackberry at the stoplight next to us.  I asked my aunt "Isn't that against the law here?"  She rolls her window down and yells at the lady "HEY!  THAT'S ILLEGAL, DUMBASS!"  Priceless.

My 15 year old sister impresses me with her driving/phone policies.  One time my mom was texting with her, and then my sister stopped answering.  My mom grew concerned, so she called - and it went straight to voicemail.  After panicking a bit she called again a while later and when my sister answered my mom said, "Why didn't you answer your phone!"  She goes "Mom, I was driving.  I always turn off my phone when I'm driving."  So that is awesome.

Another one of my sister's friends almost died last year when she reached for her phone and went off the road into a lake.  As luck would have it, the guy driving behind her was actually trained in water search and rescue - he broke the back window of her sinking car and was able to rescue her before she could drown.

There was an accident in my area a few years back.  4 high schoolers were on their way to a lake house owned by one of the parents.  On the way the car crashed and everyone inside died.  They found out the driver was texting just before she lost control.  It shook the entire community, and I'm quite sure it became national news.

It's so sad, really.  To think that all of those kids would have been fine if the driver could have been just a bit more patient and waited to respond until they reached their destination, it's such a waste.

    That is absolutely terrible.

Reminds me of those commercials that go something like "This is the text message my son was typing when he ran off the road and was killed..." and it says something like "Yeah T" or "Where u at."

    Senseless.

  • We have smoking banned in bars where I live too - and it's so much nicer.

I actually think that businesses should be able to decide whether or not to allow smoking - but I always would prefer to patronize an establishment that was smoke free.

The place I worked in college had a smoking section (until smoking was banned) and I would go home after my shift with a sore throat every time.

  • Texting and driving is illegal here in Wyoming, for when I'm glad. Most of the road traffic in our state is along a particularly dangerous stretch of I-80. There are the usual reasons, however wind is the big one folks don't expect. Crosswinds out here can rip the steering wheel right out of your hand, and at 75-85 MPH average highway speed in and among semi's, you can get killed pretty quick.

I do talk on the phone occasionally. When I do, it's vocal command hands-free, so I never touch the phone. Before I had that technology, I would occasionally talk on the phone, but if the road started to look hairy, I'd open my hand on the way to the steering wheel and the phone would drop in my lap. The occasional times that happen, if I was in a position where it was safe to call out to the phone that I had to drop it and I couldn't hear them. The times I hadn't been able to do that, screw them. I could always call them back later.

I think that the worst and most dangerous part of people talking on the phone while driving, is that they haven't been conditioned that the car is the most important part of the equation. So, if something sudden happens, their first reaction is focused on the phone, not on the car and their surroundings. This is particularly true for people who have spent more time on the phone than driving in their lives. Teenagers are at the top of this category. (This is post n run, I'm off to physical therapy.)

  • NYS is ahead of the times with bans, IMHO.  There's no smoking in public establishments, technically no smoking within a certain distance from the door, although I doubt that's enforced much.  Then we also have no cell phone use in cars, inclusive of talking, texting, and surfing the web.

We're not even close. There's a local pizza place here that has AMAZING deep-dish pizza and a microbrewery. But we never eat there because it's so terribly smokey. And we don't have any cell phone restrictions. Text away, kids.

  • I freaking love the no smoking in public buildings rule.  About a year after it went into effect a friend of mine and  I drove down to PA.  We stopped in a McDonald's there and she immediately lit a cigarette at the table, just because she couldn't do it in NYS anymore.  It was so gross I wanted to leave her sitting at the table (I'm also allergic to tobacco, though).

The law there must be written in a very different way from the law here, then.  Our law says that if there's 4 walls and a roof it's illegal to smoke inside, unless you can prove you're some sort of smoke shop, and you can't run your business without it.  Then you're allowed to buy a license that will allow patrons to smoke inside.

  • He's the general manager at a stripclub. The girls can't go outside and smoke b.c they are half naked, so the girls just aren't coming in, and the customers aren't coming in as much right now. So the ban is a double edge sword for him err us lol. He lost about a grand last month. But on the other hand, he is not breathing in smoke anymore.

  • The laws here are that somking has to be 20 feet away from the buliding and a smoker's area must be built.

  • The problem with using cones as an accurate measure of your ability to drive and talk/text is cones don't move. All it takes is you looking down for a second for the car in front of you to slam on their breaks, a deer to run onto the road, a child, etc.

I'm always terrified of getting in an accident if I have to sneeze while driving.

Ohh shiit.  That is some smart thinking.  I wonder if there's a loophole in our law that would allow for something like that.
