Your Turn for Some Typing...

Since I've been working my fingers on here all day, now it's your turn.

Tell me what kind of e-ring you want.  (Yes, I know...it's really about the meaning behind the ring, blah, blah, blah.)  SHOW ME SOME SPARKLIES!

I want to know:

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
-What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically?
-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?
-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically?

For those of us old hags that already wear a sparkly, is it what you wanted?  Do you think you'll upgrade?  What if you and your SO hit the lottery?

Pics are always welcome.

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically? A diamond

-What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically? I always said I wanted princess, but when we got to the store, I fell in love with a round

-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically? My ring is a little over 1 tcw. It is perfect for my small fingers... FI wanted something bigger.

-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?  3 stones with smaller diamonds inbetween.

-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically? White gold

For those of us old hags that already wear a sparkly, is it what you wanted?  It is exactly what I wanted :) (I picked it out)

    Do you think you'll upgrade?
FI wants to upgrade immediately. We've talked about making my e-ring into the wedding band and buying a new e-ring. At some point we'll probably upgrade. His mom has a 2 ct diamond ring she offered to give us.

What if you and your SO hit the lottery? I'll be a professor, I think it would look silly if I was sporting some huge rock. So, I would rather upgrade on a house or car than a diamond ring.

It's exactly what I wanted because I picked it out myself ;-)

Though now that I have it, I am realizing that I'm not really into wearing a sparkly every day. I love my ring, it's very sentimental and meaningful. I just don't really wear it around right now for practicality reasons.

I want the one that's in the safe! :P

What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
I never really considered anything besides a diamond and I doubt BF would have been ok with anything else.

What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
    Round.

How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically?
I've never wanted anything bigger than .5 carats. I think the one BF got is .59.

What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?
    This:

What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically?
Didn't care as long as it wasn't yellow-gold.

Yup.  I picked it out.  I did a damn fine job :)

    Do you think you'll upgrade?
    Nope.

What if you and your SO hit the lottery?
    I still wouldn't change.
    I'm not good at feelings.

I want a sapphire.  And for the record, I wanted one BEFORE Kate Middleton got hers, so there. :)

I think a sapphire is fairly realistic.  I like round or oval shapes, though I once found this (unrealistic 10k) pear shaped sapphire that was LOVELY. I'm not sure that sapphire cuts are as important as diamond ones, but I really don't know.  But I don't see any reason to skimp on the cut since that's more important to the overall look an sparkle (isn't it?)

I'm not as focused on size.  I really like three stone rings, and because of all that extra sparkle, I'm sure to not get a very large sparkle---just more of it!

Ideally, platinum sounds great.  But if not that, I'm all for white gold or palladium.  Just not yellow gold.

I like THIS one because it's lots of scroll work on the band (and I like details) and it's a three stone setting.

I like THIS one because it's a lovely three stone ring with extra sparkles down the side.

Both are way, way out of the price range.  But I figured we were goin' for broke here rather than realism.  A nice white gold band with a sapphire as center (for some reason, the diamond as center seems unbalanced to me) seems nice. Like THIS one on Blue nile, except I think even that one is too much money. It sure is pretty though.

What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?I don't really have a preference, though marquis are not my favorite. I think Oval cuts are pretty cool. My BF might be using my grandmother's ring and resetting it. It has a ~0.50 carat round diamond, and 14 diamond chips
How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  I have tiny fingers, so I think something around 1.5 carats would look gigantic and blingy on my finger. Realistically? It will either be my grandmother's diamond or it will be just under 1 carat.
What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally? I'd like to have the diamond set into the ring (bezel?). I don't want a high setting. Something like this:

Realistically? Whatever he gives me (I did show him this one... I sometimes daydream about what it would look like on my finger).

What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically? I don't really care if it's platinum or white gold. Whatever looks silver and will last a long time. I'm clumsy and can bang it up pretty bad, so the sturdier, the better.

-What kind of stone you want? Ideally?  Realistically?  A diamond. I'm a traditional girl.

-What cut do you want?  Ideally? A brilliant round cut. Again- tradition. Realistically? I'm getting an Old European cut. It's Andrew's grandmother's diamond and was cut in the 1930s. The Old European Cut is "a more refined version, and the direct ancestor of the modern billiant cut."

-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally? A carat. Realistically? Only .3 carats. I'm kinda bummed about it- but we're also trying to suplement it with a couple of my grandmother's tiny diamonds.

-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?

But our jeweler said that most rings like this are made from machines now- not by hand. And it was special for us to have a "Charles Original."

Realistically? So he's planning something like this- (Sorry the pictures are blurry). This is the plastic casting. However- two weeks ago- he said he could work the little diamonds into the casting. But we could downgrade the diamonds for $100 more. Hrm? Uh- Am I the only one that thinks this makes NO sense? P.S. those are MY grandmother's diamonds. He had all the raw materials- stones, metal- he knew what we wanted. I think he needs to fix it- no cost. ::shrugs:: But we'll talk about it when we move back in a month.

-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically? We are using Andrew's grandmother's white gold- and that's perfectly lovely!

Woo hoo!  I get to see me some bling.

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?  I want moissanite ideally and realistically

-What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically? Round

-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically? 2 carats (and it's realistic since it's moissanite - had we gone with diamond, I would say 1 carat)

-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?  I wanted something classic and timeless with a touch of uniqueness

-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically? Platinum (again realistic due to going with moissanite)

Here is the setting we chose together (I can't wait until July when I can show you girls some hand pics! Just kidding!!):

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically? To be honest I'd love a diamond
-What cut do you want?  Ideally? Round or princess, perhaps cushion even though I've never seen one up closeRealistically? whatever he choose
-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally? I'd love a carat Realistically? .70 -3/4 is ok
-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally? see picture below from Blue Nile  Realistically? whatever he chooses
-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally? 18k white gold Realistically?

I love this ring from Blue nile, but I love my BF so much it's about us being together and not the ring. I'd say yes to a ring from a cracker jack box.  Last August BF & I saw A Little Night Music on Broadway and the older character said was describing all of her lovers and her riches she has acquired in her lifetime. She mentions a man she rejected because he gave her a wooden ring and she says who knows he could have been the love of my life.

How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically?Ideally, slightly larger than 1 carat, but I think no more than 1 carat is probably realistic.
What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?I'd love to have a three-stone setting with a cool design on the band or diamonds inlaid down the sides, but realistically I think it will probably end up being a three-stone with a plain band.
What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically?I'd like platinum or palladium.  I think my boyfriend would rather get me platinum.  I really don't like the color of yellow/rose gold and Boyfriend hates the idea of having to get a white gold ring re-plated every now and then.
If I won the lottery?  We wouldn't have to wait for him to graduate to get married, we'd buy a nice house and cars, I'd quit my job and try to make it as a full-time author, and I would probably get THIS ring.  What can I say?  I can be a bit over the top sometimes, and I'm okay with that.

    1. I want a diamond - but I'm totally amenable to yellow diamonds :)

    2. I like squarer cuts, but I actually think round would suit my fingers better.

    3. Ideally, I would like a 1.5 carat center stone, but I think 1 ct would suffice.

    4. White gold, platinum, or palladium.

I guess I should answer my own question, huh?

Well...even if FI and I hit the megamillions, I wouldn't change my ring.  It's exactly what I wanted.  It's a one carat, cushion cut, very good quality diamond.  It's set in a white gold band with 0.7 cts of pave diamonds.

And best of all?  It's the ring FI proposed with.

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
The more I hear about moissanite, the more I would prefer to have that. I think it would be amazing to get it flanked by some sort of blue stone like a sapphire. I love color!

-What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
Round seems to be the best for moissanite, from what I've heard. I do really like marquise cuts, but I don't think they make them for moissanites.

-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically?
Probably no bigger than 1 ct. My fingers are fairly thin and bony, so a big ring would look silly.

-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?
I don't know. I like antique styles, but I also would like something with a low profile.  I don't want to stab anyone's eye out with a high setting.

-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically?
Palladium. I think I'm allergic to anything that is an alloy. My skin starts to itch if I wear something that is an alloy. And palladium is cheaper than platinum.

Beth, that first one is so cool! I love the carved/detailed bands. They're so pretty. :)
-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically? Honestly, I don't really care, as long as it's either clear or light purple. I did send SO a link about moissanite, as I would prefer that to a diamond just because I'm so hard on my hands and I'm worried about scratching a diamond! -What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically? Round. Round round round. :)
-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically? I actually would rather it be on the smaller side, but big enough that it's a little wider than the band.
-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically? See my signature pics below :)
-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically? As long as it is silver and not gold, I'm ok with whatever metal he picks out. Yeah, clearly I'm not too picky as long as it looks like the picture, heh.

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?I want a three stone setting, sapphire in the middle, moissonite on the sides. Thinking politically and eco-friendly is super important to us.

I agree, why upgrade when you can have BOTH!!!

    Is it what you wanted?
I wanted a smaller band but he and my cousin who helped him decided I needed sidestones with actual carat weight to them. I can't complain with that, LOL. My "dream" realistic ring was something like Audgie with the stones going underneath but I still think my ring is perfect.

    Do you think you'll upgrade?
Nope. The center stone is my great-aunt's and since that cousin recently passed away, it is too sentimental for me to ever part with. I may upgrade someday but I won't be trading this one in.

-What kind of stone you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
    clear diamond

-What cut do you want?  Ideally?  Realistically?
I thought I wanted round or princess, but I'm really growing on my oval diamond.

-How big do you want it (Stop being a perv!)?  Ideally?  Realistically?
ideally?  I like big rocks.  realistically?  before we knew for sure we were going to get my great-great-aunt's ring, we were looking at less than a ct.  the one I inherited is over 1.5ct with 2 side stones.  it's a lot bigger than I would have originally chosen, but I'm not complaining!!

-What do you want your setting to look like?  Ideally?  Realistically?
I would have chosen a solitare diamond with a detailed band.  realistically, it's an oval diamond with 2 triangle side diamonds.  it's also a higher setting than I would have chosen (it gets caught in my hair a lot) but I got used to it fairly quickly.

-What kind of metal do you want for your setting?  Ideally?  Realistically?
ideally I would have chosen white gold, platinum, or rose gold.  I was going to change the metal on the band, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  I'm sentimental like that.  the ring has always been on this setting, and it's the setting that FI proposed with.  I don't hate yellow gold like I thought I would!

I'm really sentimental about my ring for several reasons (it's the ring FI proposed with, it's the same ring that my great-great-aunt wore, it was one of the only things left to us from my great-great-uncle, my dad saved it for me to wear for over 20 years...) BUT if for some reason, FI wanted me to have another ring to wear around I would choose a detailed or twisted band with rose gold, possibly with small diamonds embedded in the band or a "hidden diamond" on the side...
