House saga, part 4837273

For anyone who's been following or is interested in buying...

The bank has finally sent out an appraiser so they can move forward with our house offer (that we sent them in September). What did the appraiser find? Apparently the seller ran out of money for life and left with the kitchen. He took and sold all of the cabinets, fridge, stove, etc.

Awesome...

At least he's out of the house and the bank is moving forward and that seems to be the worst of the damage. I can deal with a shell of a kitchen more than say, holes in the wall or busted windows. According to our agent the bank should replace all of the kitchen with equal quality everything since it was there when we made the offer. We'll see.

House buying is officially a zillion times worst than wedding planning.

  • Oh wow.  That's crazy.  They had a news story here about the crime rate on newly built homes and how the appliances get stolen out of them right before the homeowners move in.  People will do anything for a dollar.
  • We came across that a bunch too when we were looking at homes. Toilets missing, knobs, sinks, it was ridiculous.

  • On "Flip This House" someone broke into a house they were renovating and stole all the copper wire. Crazy!

  • Jeeeezus, Katie. What next?

I'd definitely revise my offer or let the bank replace the kitchen. That's just nuts.

I'm looking forward to selling my house in the next few months and not having to find one to buy. It's so stressful. Hang in there!

  • That's crazy.

By any chance can they instead just give you cash for the missing stuff? That way you can pick and install what you like!

  • That's insanity, good thing the bank is going to replace everything. Kitchen cabinets are stupid expensive.

Before we bought our house we were renting a 2 family flat in the city, and a guy tried to steal my neighbours copper gutters right off her house. I've never seen anyone run so fast before in my life, I guess an 80 year old woman in her night gown with a shotgun is a scary thing.

    Thank god we moved.

  • the bank's replacing that stuff?? surprising.
  • The irony is we were at IKEA that day and I had said to Scott "At least we don't have to worry about kitchen cabinets". Then we got the call a few hours later. Keeping my mouth shut from now on!

I love how I have my spies though. My hair dresser lives 2 houses down from the one we want and is like "I saw a moving van today, call your realtor!" Then we hiked past the house the other day (parents neighborhood) and a big black lab came to chase us away/say hi when we stopped in front of the driveway to look at it. Nice to know theres a dog guarding it now, as long as the dog stays in his yard once we move.

Part of me does feel bad for the guy though. From what I've gotten from my spies his wife left/divorced him in the spring, he put up the house in September and we put in our offer the first day it was on the market. He accepted within 24 hours and the bank has been diicking around for the last 3 months when they knew he couldn't afford to live there past November. He had just put in like...20k worth of new kitchen stuff so yeah, I'd want to take it too!

I keep telling my parents "even if we have metal shelves lined up against the wall, its still a better kitchen than we have now".
  • Daff, we think/hope they will. When we put the offer on the house it included a fully functioning kitchen, so technically they would need to provide a fully functioning kitchen for us or drop the price.

But its a bank, so we'll see what happens.
  • hmmm, that's interesting. in my experience almost all short sales are "as is" (this is a short sale right?).

there were tenants living in my house until the day before we closed. i was terrified they were gonna take stuff or trash it before they left. luckily that didn't happen, but it certainly does happen.

one house we looked at early on had people living in it (way too many people i might add). it went off the market and then went back on with a huge price reduction. turns out when the house was relisted it was missing the garage doors, the kitchen appliances, the woodburning stove, and who knows what wiring they took. it's pretty commonplace for these houses to get stripped.
