If your FI can afford a rock that ostentatious, you can afford a flight to NYC or Vancouver to try it on.
  • Oooh.  Maybe you can't get a passport.  That would explain it.

  • it has nothing to do with flying to NYC... it's that the sales clerk who took my call at the toronto store was completely unhelpful.

she didn't offer to show me something similar, she didn't offer to find out what locations have the ring, she was cold, aloof and grumpy.

a friendly tone on the phone goes a long way.
  • Sounds like you are used to everyone catering to your whims. I doubt Cartier is going to be shipping this thing all over without you making a deposit of some sort. It costs them money to send it somewhere securely. I say you make a weekend of it and go visit it.

And what tone were you using madame?  Was it a friendly tone or one ala Veruca Salt?  Not that I don't believe you but I have a had time believing that a Cartier salesperson would be rude/unhelpful on the phone.
  • FFS, stop whining. Go get the ring, or don't. Why waste so much energy complaining about one salesperson on the phone? If you're bent up about it, don't give them your business.

i promise you that i am not used to being catered to.  she was just rude.

i will go to where the ring is if i have to but like my SO pointed out,  they have replicas that they could ship.  i plan to go to the store on monday and ask again.  i'd really like to at least know the price before i fly somewhere for it.

As your "rude" salesperson was trying to tell you, she can't tell you the price because it depends on the size/type of diamond that you choose.  DUH.

  • Sometimes stores, especially places that sell high priced items, will not tell you prices over the phone. They want you to visit the store.

i was polite.  i too have a hard time believing that Cartier staff would be this unhelpful which is why i posted about it.
  • Make sure that you bring your taser with you when you visit the store. Rude sales clerks usually respond best to tasers.
  • FYI - there's a little "details" screen on the Cartier website that allows you to request price information

just to help you out, you could buy me the ring and i will wear it and you can see how it looks on my finger and then decide if you want to buy it for yourself....but im keeping the ring.

do you truly believe that they don't know the price range of the rings they sell?  it's not like cartier has "cheaper" diamonds as an option so i think it's safe to say that she could have given me a reasonable ballpark figure.
  • As Tide suggested, you can have just saved yourself the phone call and found out price information online. The price depends on what size diamond you choose, as well as other factors.

But seriously, it's Cartier. They're going to expect you to drop the $$$ without batting an eye.

i already emailed them earlier in the weekend.  got a stock email response telling me to contact my local boutique.
  • If you're this frustrated, I would find a different jeweler.  I am all about customer service and I will refuse to shop places if I feel they have been exceptionally rude.  I can only imagine how much this sucker is going to cost and I wouldn't want my FI dropping that kind of money at a place where they were rude to me.

So you really have two options:

    1.  Make a weekend trip to Vancouver/NYC and go see the ring in person.  Before you go, make sure they will have it in stock.

    2.  Find a different vendor.  There are plenty of other high quality places that will be happy to have your business.

Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful proposal with a ring you love.

yes you're probably right.  but when you're in the store, everything, including rings that can be customized, have prices. i understand that she was snooty and didn't want to waste her time but they work on commission so i'm surprised she wouldn't at least make an effort to be nice.

i suspect that when i go into the store it will be a very different experience.

3-5 carats is a huge difference in price, alone.  Take into account that you also have cut, clarity, and color to factor in, and you have a limitless combination of factors.

To give you an idea, a 3.24 carat diamond solitare is currently selling on ebay for <span><span class="vi-is1-prcp">$55,855.00US.  You do get free shipping, though.

This could be a good point. Again pet store reference, but when I had customers who would call and ask what cats we "had in stock" and have me describe every cat to them over the phone I was not very helpful.
They probably get tons of calls every day that are pranks or people just wanting to try on shiny rings, so I could see where they are saying "either come down or I'm not dealing with you."

    thanks!

i agree about customer service.  i once went to buy a pair of shoes from a high end store and the salesperson told me in a loud voice that i have such big feet that he didn't think that anything would fit me.  i was horrified.

it's the only store that carried the shoes that i wanted so i waited a week and went back and had an amazing salesperson who found me the shoes that i was looking for.  the original sales person was there and was super pissed the whole time i was trying on shoes.

i think i will try to make it to NYC to try on the ring or i'll take a chance and just have the ring replicated by a jeweller at a much lower cost.  i don't care about it being from cartier... i just love the design.

    Ditto pp.

At stores like Cartier, if you have to ask the price, then you can't afford it.

Although I did recently hear about this replica ring thing, I cannot remember where though.
  • Anyone else uneasy about spending 6.5 million on a loose diamond on ebay?  Seriously if you have that kind of cash, you are not shopping on ebay.

But hey, they are based out of Toronto so maybe OP can go see it!
  • i have noticed that when i go into stores like cartier, etc WITH my SO there is a very different reception.  he has the air of someone who belongs in those places.  i have the air of someone who is lost.... Embarassed
