Should I buy from a bridal salon from another country??

Hello everyone:)
I would like to know if anyone is or has been in my situation? I have looked alll over for this dress which is discontinued and have had no luck finding it here in the U.S. (even with the help of several bridal stores that used to carry it). I e-mailed a store in the Netherlands (just for the heck of it) and they finally got back to me saying they have it!! Im so excited BUT very cautious because there is some what of a language barrier and Im very nervous buying it from a store over seas. Should I go for it? Maybe only if I can pay using Pay Pal to help make it more secure?

  • Hi!

    I'm from the Netherlands.

If you want to check if a business is for real, you can check with the Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce), they have a national registry of businesses. A business can't operate legally (taxwise etc) without registering. Their website is at www.kvk.nl. I'm not sure wether you can check the registry online though. Scroll to the bottom left for the button "English", for the translated site.

If it is an online store, they may have a Thuiswinkel Waarborg (Homeshopping Guarantee). This is a certificate for online stores issued by an independant foundation meaning it's safe to buy something. If there's a dispute they will help.

If they don't operate an online store paying with Paypal probably isn't possible. But you could check with your creditcard company to see what kind of protection they offer should you be disappointed. For example, if I order something that isn't as promised, with my card company I can contest the payment and they will mediate between me and the vendor.

Generally Dutch commercial laws are quite protective of buyers where returns etc. are concerned, but you should check with the store what their policy is.

It could also be a good idea to check if you have to pay import duties when importing your dress from overseas. When I buy something in the US I have to pay additional taxes, so it might be the same when a product takes the opposite route. With the value of the dollar it is still cheaper for me, but it might be more expensive for you!

    Good luck!
  • Thanks everyone!
I was just a little worried because their english was okay but not perfect when e-mailing me back. I would hate to have some kind of miscommunication, because they have a No return policy also! I will look into the store a little more. Thanks again!
