I have asthma (and a red inhaler). I don't like smoking and rarely put myself in situations where smoking is taking place. I still place the highest value on personal liberties, however unpopular smoking is. I believe that a business owner should be able to choose whether they want smoking in their establishment or not. Hospitals, public schools, police departments, etc. should have a ban on smoking. I guess it's not the actual issue of smoking that drives my opinion; it is my issue with my own personal liberties being taken seriously that drive my opinion. I know I'm in the minority, but that's ok. And I'm with you all that smoking isn't pleasant to be around.

Sorry, I specifically requested a blue inhaler when I got it filled today. The blue ones have the counter on them! Oh, but my steroid inhaler is an orangey red. Does that count?

I'll only let them make it into a Lifetime movie if they let me play myself. Or...Claire Danes. I think she could get my asthmatic angst down pat.

As of 2009 you were still able to smoke in whatever airport I was at in Tennessee. It was a smoking section, obviously, but it was still inside.

J&K, I would have laughed, too. But then, people constantly think that my husband is 40, even though he's only 28. The first time he went to the doctor up here, the doctor (apparently didn't look at his chart), and thought that Matt was 40.

H turns 30 next weekend. He told me I'm not allowed to throw him a big party, but I still want to make a big deal about it. So far, my parents are taking him out to dinner, he's getting a Space Invaders hat, and I'm getting him a cookie cake.

What else can I do?

FTR, he's an old man trapped in a young man's body. He shakes his fist at "those damn kids" driving too fast down the street, and he likes to water the lawn while wearing khakis (or khaki shorts), black socks, sandals and a white undershirt. I know you're all jealous, but he's mine.

The only places in WA that you can smoke inside of are the casinos. They are all on the reservations and the reservations don't have to follow the law. We don't go to the casino often and if we do we only go to the buffet and their filtration system is awesome and you really aren't aware that anyone is smoking around you.

I'm with mica on the smoking bans.

My husband was the same way, Special. Since we were saving for the wedding, I didn't just surprise him with something big, like I wanted to, but I did arrange a small surprise party in IN about a month after his birthday. Here, we did pretty much the same thing--special gifts, dinner with my family, etc.

I didn't get it, because I'd love a big surprise party for my 30th. I'm of no use here except in commiserating.

OH god, yeah, you can still smoke on the reservations here, too. And hence, the casinos. And a lot of them are dry, so you can't drink there, but you can smoke allllll you want.

This is why I don't go to the casinos. I just can't handle the smoke.

You can drink at our casinos. A few years ago I didn't like going because it was always so smokey in there. Now it's really nice and you can hardly tell. I even feel comfortable taking E when we go to the buffet.

I feel bad about H's 30th. His bday is on Christmas, so we'll probably never get to go out with friends on his actual birthday. And everyone is so busy around the holidays that it's hard to throw a party. I think I ended up just getting him a cake and we sang happy birthday at the NYE party we went to.

Maybe one day we'll throw a holiday party and I can say it's his bday party too

YEAH!! OR THE LACK OF ALCOHOL. Which is SUPER unfortch because they have AWESOME golf courses. Fuuck if I'm gonna golf without a beer.

So we sneak it in, or on the course if we're gonna go golf or if there's a show we wanna see. There are a couple of casinos you can drink in, but there are quite a few you can't.

I rarely go to the casinos because they allow smoking too. I'll go occasionally, and we have one where it's not bad unless a smoker sits right next to me in which case I move, but I really can't handle large amounts of smoke.

And I know what you mean--I kept twirling around in it and pretending it was feathers. People kept stroking the skirt. Freaks ;).

Can you surprise him with a weekend trip somewhere not too far away? Or take him to do something he really wants to do, but won't do on his own? I think I'm going to give N a sky-diving lesson for his birthday, because he's always wanted to do it, but will never spend the money on himself.
