Instead of a wedding, I want....

So, in an entertaining conversation with my boyfriend last night we were discussing how stupidly expensive weddings have gotten. Especially in the DC area. I told him that instead of a wedding, we should elope and buy a boat. This one:

According to The Knot, the average wedding costs $27,800. Assuming you had that money and you'd skip the formalities and just go to the the courthouse, what would you spend that money on?

  • I'm going to combine Tarra & Liv's answers. I want to go on a rocking trip! Probably Tahiti, Norway or New Zealand. Then I'd take the rest and put it towards the down payment on a house.
  • Either a bigger home or a really nice expensive, long honeymoon.

  • A house with land, and a pet zebra.

  • I'd go for an around the world trip for both of us. I have way too many places that I want to go to pay a lot for a wedding. Also, I'm cheap.

  • I'm with stillwell too.

Yep, this. We're going to do this anyways when I graduate in May, though. So I guess the extra money would really be for a down payment on a house.

Jealous. I wish I had the money and time to do an around-the-world trip :(.

  • Down payment on a house.  I can't wait to get out of apartment living.

Yeah...we figured after I graduate is the perfect time for me to do something like this, and H is totally fine with just up and quitting his job, haha. It is definitely going to delay house buying because of the money we'll spend, but I think it'll be worth it.

Yeah, we own a house and are paying off the car I bought earlier this year. Add in the three dogchildren and we have a lot of responsibilities. I just want to travel so badly. I hurt inside when I hear about people's fabulous vacations because I want to travel like that again.

  • I definitely couldn't buy all of these things with the money we spent on our wedding, but here's the stuff I want:

    Volkswagen Eos

    Yamaha Waverunner Sport

    Cobalt 232

  • We just bought a new house (with a yard). And we travel pretty regularly. So, I think a boat should be our next big investment. :) He'd argue we'd need to get a Corvette.

  • An awesome vacation
    A new car
A new kitchen (or just a better house)

The vacation is the biggie though.

    Life is good today.
  • BF and I would go on a trip to Australia/New Zealand.

  • I would go on a decent vacation... not a HUGE one, and I'd still trim costs.

...and the rest would go toward student loan debt.

And maybe, just maybe, the Studly could finally get his pilot's license.

Though I'd still have student loan debt then...
  • That would barely cover a down payment on a house in the area I like.

If we were going to blow it to blow it, we'd be on a fantastic vacation for like a month.  Probably somewhere on the Med.

  • I have $15000 left on student loans, so it would first go to that. I'd probably give some to my younger siblings for college (two will be starting next year).

I would buy my cats some stuff to create an awesome living space for them.

The rest would go to my savings account to contribute to a down payment on a nice house.

  • I agree with the house vote. the rest would go towards a nicer car for one of us and debts.

  • I'd put it towards an awesome honeymoon and then pay off student loans.... saddly that would be the end of that money cause the trip would cost so much.

  • Well, I'm glad that while I live in an expensive area, I spend quite a bit less than the average. I think H would have kept his half of the wedding money to start his half of the house downpayment. We could have gone on an even more awesome honeymoon. Someplace like this:

  • Leia... I want to be inside that picture. Now.
  • I would vote fabulous vacation too, maybe to New Zealand and outlying islands...

We aren't entirely sold on home ownership yet.  FI hates yard work and prefers condo living.  I would like to be able to have a garden for the kiddo.  I think we could both agree on an amazing adventure together, though!

  • I would want to use the money to help pay off the key stuff first- my student debts and maybe a nice down payment on a house.  Eventually, S.O. and I want to do some kayaking, so I wouldn't mind splurging on kayaking gear and a Jeep so we could do some off-roading together. We're outdoorsy people

  • A vacation for sure.  Somewhere we haven't been yet (well there are lots of places) maybe the med or New Zeeland... Ya I am liking that opinion.

  • FI and I actually considered having a small couthouse wedding with only immediate family and spend the money on a tour around the world. Sadly, for many reasons this fell through. One being that FI's work wouldn't let him take 3 weeks off during the most busy time of their year. It is actually still up in the air if they'll give him a week off next year. He says if they don't, he'll just call in sick and say that he's going to see a specialist wherever we decide to honeymoon.

  • I would buy two round the world tickets and take off for a few months with my SO.

Or maybe a down payment on a house with enough land and zoning for chickens and veggies and enough room for kids.

Or (some of the) fees for an adoption agency.
