Jenna, that came out wrong. My point was it isn't just if you can afford a new car. They can (I can't, honestly) but they still feel it's a better value to buy used. I think this is just one of those topics where people have to agree to disagree, and each do what works best for us. It is harder to find everything you want in color, options, etc. When you buy used. I lucked out and got it as if it was custom-made with all my preferences. But I didn't have to deal with recalls because they usually figure those out in the first two years. And more is known about used cars and whether they need lots of service, so I feel you can make a more educated decision. Certain years are better values because they break down less, and you don't know that on new cars.

Oh man I'm envious. I want a jeep so badly! Those are amazing vehicles, but I'm thinkin I may go with a subaru next like my mom.. I love the way they handle (especially for being awd) and I like to be lower to the ground. But will still *drool* over Jeeps :P

Oh ok. I just saw a girl with dark hair in the driver's seat, and a pilot getting out of the car at the gas station, and I was thinking it could have been you and your FI. Then when you said you drive a VW I thought maybe it really was, but nope. I have family in town, so we took them to Deception Pass and up Mount Erie yesterday. H wanted to stop and pick up smoked salmon pate from Seabolt's while we were there.

mmm smoked salmon.. we're going down to pike place for an early birthday day for FI today. (I have a crazy amount planned for today... A little worried that it might be TOO much hah) And smoked salmon will be a stop along the way :]
Deception pass is beautiful, although fi is sick of that drive every day. And I may know the people you saw now that I think about it. Funny.. Although this base is pretty much all pilots and maintainers, so you can't run into much else hah

Ok a few things. I don't care if people buy used/pre owned/new etc. It's your money, do what you want, just make sure to shop around for best deal.

To whomever bought the hyundai (I think it was Shan), for the love of everything, get rid of it before the warranty is up. It will be good until the warranty is on and then literally it becomes a money pit. My parents had an 01 elantra that I got from them in 07. At that point that I got it, it became ridiculously bad. Hyundais are known for that. LUckily, H is a mechanic so he saved me some money by doing things for me, but he couldn't do everything because of his work schedule etc. I probably was dropping $200 a month in that car. My mechanic and H told me the same thing about hyundais. They last for about 6 years and then go crazy so be very very very aware. (As you can tell, I'm pretty sure I'm traumatized by what I went through with that car haha and I don't want anyone to go through the same thing)

Jetta's-H had an 06 Jetta up until recently. he had absolutely no problems with it at all. He also did not do routine maintenance on it and beat the crap out of the car and nothing went wrong it.

And to throw in my 2 cents about new/used/etc. I have a 1998 V6 honda accord. I LOVE my car. It gets great gas mileage. Right now, it would be pointless for me to buy a newer car. On the drive down to Beaufort my car was making 35 miles to the gallon on the highway. For a 1998 V6 that is incredible. H got rid of his jetta and bought an 05 mazda rx8. We know they have problems with the engine, but like I said, H is a mechanic so that helps us a lot. I think if you buy smart, used or new, you will be ok. Research cars before hand, etc.

I have a Hyundai, well, DH does. I can't drive it. It's a stick. It's well past warranty and still no problems. They have changed a lot and come a long way in the past 10 years. I never would have bought one 10 years ago, especially since their crash test rating was pretty bad back then.
In Response to Re: NWR My car : I did see it all go down...I just never felt the need to comment on it (the ladies had it under control). My observation on Cali comes from more than this thread. I'm not going to go through thousands of posts but I had enough when she basic told another poster on NEY that her David's Bridal dress was cheap. That was another misunderstanding.....
    Posted by msjenna519
I'm hoping you're using "basic" in a VERY general way. She never said that her DB dress was cheap, she said that the quality is less than stellar for the money, which is true. They produce a ton of dresses, in a ton of sizes, at "affordable" prices. To get dresses at those prices, something has to suffer, and with DB it's the quality of the material, and the quality of the craftsmanship. I hated every single dress I tried on there. They have some beautiful dresses, and some that look absolutely stunning on some brides. I think that they cater to a specific body type (obviously it wasn't mine), therefore making their dresses even more inaccessible to "every" bride. I've known quite a few brides with DB dresses, who looked absolutely gorgeous, most of them were more than slightly horrified at spending a mass amount of money on a wedding, let alone their dress. But more to the point, you're misinterpreting what she said, and bringing it over here, when most of the girls on here didn't even know about it.

Yes, C can be very blunt, but that's what I personally love about her. She's the older sister I always wanted. This is not a group of ladies who validate bad ideas or blow rainbows and sunshine up anyone's butt. I know you've been on here sporadically, so I'm sure you know this. I'm just not at all sure what you're trying to accomplish by calling her a snob..

I understood quite clearly what she was saying by bringing her parents in this.. She's saying that her parents could easily afford to buy a brand spanking new car, but they choose to buy used.

The OP on the NEY post asked for opinions on dresses. If I had been the OP, I would have appreciated her point on these dresses and widened my search.. When I ask for someone's opinion, I want the good, bad and the ugly. That's the biggest problem with the boards, people post asking for opinions, but when they don't get the responses they want, they get all butt hurt. I'm not saying that's what the OP did, because I actually went back and read it today and she didn't, that was more of a general comment about people asking for opinions.

I just don't think it's really your place to "wonder why she chooses to say the things she does"...

This is ridiculous. You know where I first heard that Davids Bridal dresses aren't well sewn and use less quality material? A booked called "Weddings on A Budget". It gives DB a D- score for value. So it isn't "snobby", and has nothing to do with my budget. I was offering advice on how she could find a quality dress at whatever budget. I never brought up budgets, amount, money. I talked about quality. And the NEY girls behaved like immature children - one even created a fake email in my name, figured out FI's email, and sent him a picture of me in my dress. I'd rather be someone who is greatly appreciative of what my parents are giving me for the wedding, openly admitting their financial situation is not my own, than be fake and try to hide it just to make people like you, Jenna, view me as less "snobby". I am not ashamed that my parents have money - I don't even have any savings right now, so it isn't my lifestyle. I find that people here on TK can complain about being broke or talk about small budget/, but the minute you mention money in a positive light - as in "I have enough" rather than "We have a tight budget" - people jump down your throat. And it was relevant to my point here, though it wasn't phrased clearly.

I'm so sick of this. Mentioning my parents have money does not mean I have any... In fact, I currently have none as I'm bailing myself out from being unemployed for 3 months. I offered my advice to the topic, which was DB gowns. It was everyone else who chose to spin that into something having to do with money. The double standards are stupid - girls can bitch about not having money but can't even state that they have a comfortable budget without getting called a snob. Your logic fails, btw... I was arguing in favor of buying a used car because it's a better value. There's nothing remotely snobby about that. I care how people I like see me. I don't care how some random person, who insists on bringing up a 2 month old thread of ridiculousness, thinks of me. Go back to NEY. I think you suit them better. We don't usually deal with these personal attacks here.

Classy. I've been called a snob exactly twice in my life - that thread about DB and now by you. I think blowing one statement about my parents having money into this ridiculousness makes you look a whole lot worse than me. And I'm not remotely brand-conscious, so I don't know what you're trying to get at by calling me a hypocrite. I was saying Katelyn has shown a proclivity towards brand names. My opinion of DB isn't based on designer snobbery. They make beautiful gowns that photograph wonderfully, but the material isn't usually the highest quality, and the sewing can be poor. A number of girls have dresses I really admire from there, Stan included, that look gorgeous. And I've seen far more designer gowns that I hate. I don't usually buy "designer" anything....ever. I just chose to shop elsewhere. So your point missed it's mark. And now I'm done with you. Post where you want, but I won't interact anymore with such a narrow-minded petty person.

I second this. and I really didn'tt see anything wrong with what she stated in that original thread that you threw out there. My sister is an excellent seamstress and she looks over clothes to see how well they are made before she buys as well, so I guess she's a snob and what not too because she has knowledge that some may not. Oh and she reads about reviews as well on stores and their clothing so again I guess she is the same.

My past time is not sewing(yes I can sew but hate it and am not good at it) and yes I LOVE to seek advise from someone who has knowledge and would take advise from them first.

As for the $$ thing I totally got what she was implying and didn't need it spelled out for me. It wasn't rude, she was using the people she knew PERSONALLY to back up her statement.

@ Jenna, maybe your niche is reading into words to much and if I had a sensitive matter and didn't want to hurt a persons feelings I would ask for your advise since you read too far into things.

This OP wasn't a sensitive matter nor the one about the dress.

ETA: I will also say I haven't seen you post here but once maybe, and it wasn;t enough to "know" you.

If you only post things when you get upset and come out of "lurking" how can I understand where you are comming from and not be so offensive when you call someone out, but you only come out from lurking when someone rubs you the wrong way as you admitted on the NEY board, so naturally the impression will be you just want to smear stuff, that doesn't get you anywhere on these boards.

I have been sewing for 19 years and do it now for an income. My mother has been sewing and teaching it for 25+ years. We both thought my dress was very well made and it was from DB. Mine was Galina for DB so I don't know if that makes a difference. I'm not sure where I was going with this. Anyway I think you are over-reacting, Jenna. You said this is a public board so that makes it okay for Calindi to voice her opinion when and where she pleases. This argument is pointless and silly.

I didn't see the DB thread until two days ago. I certainly wasn't going to resurrect an old thread. Since it's been brought up, I wanted to say a few things.

-There is a serious bias against brides with high(er) budgets on TK. There is also a bias against brides who get substantial help with their weddings. I believe that the only reason that Cate's comments were seen as snobbish is because her parents are giving her a generous budget.

-I got my dress from DB. I like it. I had a great experience. I'm also glad I spent so little on it. My dress is filthy and probably won't ever look like new. It was on my body for 10 hours. I'll never wear it again and I'm not passing it on to anyone. Still, I don't think her comments were at all offensive. Cate is entitled to her opinion about DB and their products. I don't really think that the quality of clothes at Old Navy is very good. The clothes don't seem to wash very well. So, I won't shop there. It's my own opinion and I'm entitled to it. Does that make me a snob? No.

-In closing the whole thing was blown out of proportion.

Goldlie, I want an update on your wedding!!! Did you AW somewhere? Thanks for the morale support, also. I know msjenna went running back to NEY to rally the troops to come lynch me, but I'm glad it brought you over! So sad and juvenile, which is why I don't post there anymore. Things seem to get blown out of proportion soooo easily.
