how long for bridesmaid dresses?

hi ladies -

just wondering - how long before the wedding do you recommend that the bridesmaids ORDER their dresses? Trying to start making a timeframe...

Re: how long for bridesmaid dresses?

  • I'd say about 4 months out.

  • You have a TON of time. Try to avoid talking wedding with the BMs right now (unless they bring it up, and even then keep it light) so nobody gets wedding burnout.

If you're ordering from a salon, start looking around 6-7 months out. I think you can order around 4-5 months out, depending on the designer. I also think that wholesalers (pearlsplace.com, netbride.com, rkbridal.com) will send you the dresses faster than a salon, in addition to giving you a better price.

My BMs ordered their dresses from AnnTaylor.com 4 months before the wedding. So a regular clothing store or a nice department store (Nordstrom.com, Lord and Taylor, Macy's) is an option if you want to wait a while. Plus the girls had their AT dresses in their hands within a week, which was nice since I didn't like the idea of ordering from a salon and then waiting and waiting for the dresses to come in.

  • 4-6 months is pretty standard and PLENTY of time for 99% of designers (though they'll tell you to buy earlier to get the same "dye lot" which is rubbish since colors are calibrated by computer and there is little noticeable difference between the shades)>

  • i would say 4-6 months...i just ordered mine for my friends wedding in october. the guy at the bridal shop said it takes about 3-4 months for them to come in, and we need 2 months for altering. soooo, i'm getting mine about 6 months in advance just to be on the safe side!!

  • Depends on the designer.  I'd say once you hit about 8 months out, you can start looking around to see which designers you like (that fit into your girls' budgets, which you'll naturally ask them before you start looking), and then find out from the ones you like best when they recommend ordering.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Thanks ladies!!!
  • I've been told to give it 8-10 weeks for shipping and another 2 months for alterations.  I think that is just to play in on the safe side though because my one bridesmaid received her dress just 2 weeks after ordering.  And, I think the alteration guideline will vary depending on if you go with the store to do adjustments for you or if you are taking it somewhere else.

I waited until 5 months before our wedding to order the dresses and that was a good amount of time to give me a piece of mind.

  • I don't know where this "2 months for alterations" is coming from.  I've always been able to get alterations in a week.  When I took my sister/MOH to get her alterations for my wedding, she got them in 3 days.

  • It can depend on the designer - my MOH got married yesterday.  We ordered the dresses in August.  They arrived the second week in January.  My alterations were done in 2 weeks flat.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.
    • Great to know I have time before we start looking! Thanks all!
  • Depends where you're getting the dresses from! If you go to somewhere like Davids Bridal you can sometimes take the dress right off the rack and home, and if not, they come in within a month usually.  They have dresses in stock constantly.

If you go to more of a smaller owned bridal boutique they have to order dresses from the designer which can take a few months sometimes since they need to be made.

I wouldn't wait any longer then 6-7 months before the wedding for a smaller boutique!
