Do you freeze bread or milk?

I find this odd, and it seems like neither would taste good after being thawed.

Re: Do you freeze bread or milk?

  • We'll freeze bread sometimes. Not often, but I did in college a lot.

Milk, I don't know about that.

  • We freeze bread, but I only eat bread as toast.  If I'm going to have a fresh slice of bread, it's got to be bakery bread.  I'm a bread snot like that.

  • My parents always froze bread when I was growing up and I've done it as an adult before.  But I never end up using it.  I just cleaned out the freezer a few weeks ago and threw out a bunch of frozen bread, rolls, bagels, etc.  Now I just buy what I need, and if I end up tossing a few pieces, no big deal.  Never heard of freezing milk.
  • We freeze bread because we buy it a couple loafs at time from Sam's Club. We still like it. I've never frozen milk.

  • I mean, I understand why someone would do it, especially someone on a budget.  Like, if milk is on an awesome sale, stock up, right?  And bread- I know with just the 2 of us we don't use even half a loaf before it goes bad plus leftover buns, etc.

  • If there's a really good sale on bread, I'll buy a couple loaves and freeze some.  It tastes fine afterward.

I don't drink milk, so I know nothing about the taste or consistancy after freezing it.

  • We don't buy a ton of actual bread, but we buy bread like things such as english muffins, bagel thins and wraps and stuff from Costco, and freeze portions of it.  It always thaws out perfectly fine.

  • We froze bread at my parent's house, but H hates frozen bread with a passion so we don't freeze it at our house.  I've never heard of freezing milk.

  • I buy bread and then put it directly in the freezer. I find that I don't eat it quickly enough to not keep it frozen. I always toast my bread anyway, so it's not a big deal if it's frozen. It thaws quickly and toasts just the same as non frozen bread.

  • We freeze bread because we don't eat it often enough so an entire loaf would mold if we didn't freeze it.  I just pop a couple slices in the microwave for 10 seconds to unfreeze it when I want it or the toaster.  I don't freeze milk, that does seem odd.  Mainly because I then wouldn't know a true expiration date and I'm weird about dairy expiration dates lol.

  • Good to know that the bread/bread products still taste good.

I still think the milk would taste funny, though.  I thought of the milk because there is a frozen 1/2 gal in our freezer at work right now.

IN OTHER NEWS- my coworker keeps walking back and forth past my cube in her flip flops and I'm about to smack her.  I think I'm irritable today.

  • I freeze both. Only sliced bread though, and I use it for toast. Milk I've frozen but you have to let it completely unthaw before using. My parents used to do it growing up. The only reason I would freeze milk though is if I buy milk and get home and realize I still have some - don't use it enough and don't want to waste.

  • Same as most PPs.  If I buy bread and need it right away, we use what we need and then put the rest in the freezer.  I grew up eating frozen bread, so it's not that unusual to me.

I have never frozen milk, though.

  • My mom always freezes bread. The idea weirds me out, I don't know why. I never buy enough bread to keep it in the freezer anyway. My FI tries to keep the bread in the fridge instead of the cabinet and it bothers me. I don't really know why, it just does.

I've never heard of freezing milk. My mom also used to always buy the Parmalat milk that could be stored in the pantry.
  • My toaster has a "frozen" button on it, so apparently freezing bread is common enough for black and decker to get on board.

  • I can't keep enough milk to justify freezing it. I drink milk like every cow on earth is going to die tomorrow.

  • I freeze bagels.

I've accidentally frozen milk once, and it's fine if you let it thaw completely before drinking it. But I hate those icy chunks.

  • Habs, I always thought that was for stuff like, um... toaster streudels?

    That totally makes sense.  hahahah.

I fail at toaster pasteries.  I was never allowed them growing up.

  • I freeze bagels all the time because they go stale within a day. If they've only been in a little while, I nuke it for about 20 seconds when I take it out and it tastes just like fresh. If it's been in longer, I nuke to defrost and then toast. I also have some nice rolls and a big sourdough in the freezer right now. They taste fine when they come out. White bread doesn't work so well.

I don't freeze milk because I don't drink and DH goes through 1/2 gallon every other day so we always have fresh.

see that? That's how we do it. Our bread is fine after being thawed?

This is the only kind of milk you can buy in Chile. It's all UHT pasteurized, so it comes in boxes, and you keep it in the cupboard until you open it, at which point it has to go in the fridge. It lasts for months unopened. It doesn't taste bad, but it tastes different, and I prefer US milk for sure.

Oh, and my dad always buys sourdough bread in the SF airport on his way to England and then freezes it there, and like everyone else has said it tastes normal when you thaw it.
  • Are you sure ldy?? :D

I have frozen bread before but then I usually forget about it. I have never heard of freezing milk. We only ever use milk for cooking so we just buy one of those quarts and still never use it all. I should probably freeze it if its okay. Hmm

We also freeze cheese. We buy one of those 700 pounds of grated cheese from costco and freeze it. Sometimes I just snack on the frozen cheese.. its so good. Embarassed

  • We freeze bread... But we also eat a lot of sandwiches (bring them to work with us) so even though we throw it in the freezer we pull it back out within a week or two. Bread doesn't taste bad after you freeze it unless you leave it in there so long that it gets frost bitten, kind of like other foods you know? At least I don't think it does, but I grew up eating bread from the freezer!

  • the only time i freeze bread is when we've had a BBQ and i have a lot of leftover hotdog/hambuger rolls.  then ill freeze them, but they are only good if eaten within2 months max.  after that, tehy get freezer burns.

  • I freeze bread and milk. . . . I don't think it changes the taste or quality of either.  Milk is always weird b/c you have to guess when it will expire once you pull it out, but we usually drink it fast enough that it's never an issue.

Me too. I don't drink milk so I didn't care that my mom bought that kind. She doesn't drink milk either. Come to think of it, I'm not really sure who that milk was for. Now she only buys organic whole milk for my brother and goats milk (wtf?) for my weird step-dad.
  • Freezing bread and milk and cheese is fine.

Boxed milk in the pantry skeeves me out too.  BUT I am not a big milk drinker anyways.
  • I freeze bread all the time.  I stock up on our fave when it's on sale.

i've never frozen milk but I have frozen breastmilk so I suppose it wouldn't be any different.
