  • Hey!

Hey B, we went to visit H's dad today for Christmas. We mentioned that Dave really wanted to go to Europe when he graduates. Then FIL said he wanted to pay for it! (wow, wtf?). I looked at flights and it's 1500 to fly from here to Rome or Athens. What did you pay?

Also, how was renting a car?

  • Oh, and what phone do you have? We're switching to Sprint and getting the HTC Evo when  I get this new job.

Which, btw, I got called back for a 4th interview! It almost feels like I'm interviewing for the freaking government! I'm hoping that this 'interview' is actually an offer conversation!

  • Hi ladies!  I knew there had to be at least one other person on tonight.

I cleaned my house like a crazy person today getting ready to go home for 2 weeks.  I have a friend and her BF flying in the same day that i get back so I needed to have everything clean and ready for them.  I seriously didn't think my house was that dirty, and I cleaned for like 6 hours.

  • Ugh, my house needs that, dnb. I slacked off all day because DH is sick and I think I'd annoy the crap out of him puttering around cleaning.
  • I hate days like that. I forgot that I cleaned so well last week, so when we got home tonight, I was so happily surprised that the only thing I had to do is the laundry.

  • I'm here.  I slept ALL day... from like 8 AM until about 5:30 - how am I gonna go to bed tonight?
  • I made the wedding scrapbook today, a batch of my sea salt caramels, and am now working on crocheting a hat for my friend's baby girl (due in March).  I felt very productive.  I get a lot more done when H is away.
  • Tonight is a combination of laundry and cross-stitching.  Since I'm on a very tight budget this Christmas I am baking cookies for my sisters & brothers-in-law and cross-stitching them some hand towels.

  • I keep my house pretty clean, but it just took forever to do it all.  They are the first people from home coming to visit, so I want them to be able to tell people how great it is here and how much they liked our house, not how dirty it was!

I absolutely love having 3 bathrooms.  We have a half bath downstairs, a master bath, and a full guest bath both upstairs.  It's so nice to be able to shower at the same time when we are rushed and stuff, so I absolutely love it.  Except on cleaning days, then I loathe the fact that we have 3 bathrooms.

  • I think H just wants it for a day to drive from London to Stonehenge. Maybe one to do a little in the French countryside. Not sure what kind we'd want. Depends on how the weather is I guess. We're wanting to hit Athens, Rome, Florence, Paris, some little town in France, London and Stonehenge. We'll take a train from Rome to Paris though so he can see some of Switzerland and we might just pick a town and jump off for a night. (with the correct ticketing of course.)

  • LVB, if you can fly into London or Paris, it's usually cheaper than flying into the airports in Italy or Greece.  (Of course, I don't know which places you'd like to visit.)
  • Squirrly I almost just got that phone when I got my new one the other day.  I ended up getting the droid x though because I wanted the bigger screen.

I just made some tuna noodle casserole and it wasn't very good... I'm hoping the leftovers are better after they've sat for a bit...

  • Also, LVB, have you considered discounted airlines such as RyanAir instead of training it?  It's faster to fly and sometimes cheaper too.  Of course, then you miss out on seeing the countryside from your window.  Maybe do a combo of flying and training?

Hey. You. I think we're coming to Denver in June. At least we'll be making a trip there. We're going to be staying somewhere near Estes Park?

It's great except for the battery life. It got better after the last firmware update, but before that I only got six hours on a charge, without even using the darn thing.
  • I follow this recipe with a little less sugar but I cook it to firm ball (cooking it to hard ball makes really really chewy caramel), then sprinkle sea salt on it as it cools.

I went when I was in college. Most of it will be flying, but I had such an amazing train ride that I'd really love for H to see it. I trained from Milan to Paris. It was so funny; I paid like $10 for a People magazine and I spent a lot of the trip reading. I happened to look up and was stunned. I thought, man, these mountains are BEAUTIFUL. Then I realized I was going through the Swiss Alps. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif" border="0" alt="Embarassed" title="Embarassed" />

  • LVB - you didn't ask me, but since we went to Italy in September I'll answer too - Our tickets were about $850 each - Cleveland to Milan with a layover at JFK for about 2 hours.  We booked them about 4 or 5 months  early.
We rented a car too - it was about $800 for 10 days - we picked it up in Milan and dropped it off when we got to Venice and used the train for the last 4 days.  We got a MercedesA180 - tiny car through Europcar.  We paid a little extra to get an automatic so H wouldn't get stuck doing ALL the driving - although he did anyway but if he'd gotten hurt or something we wanted me to have the option of driving.  We bought the European disks for OUR GPS (Garmin Nuvi) and took it with us.  We could have gotten one through the rental car place, but what if it was in Italian or we couldn't read the controls or something.  The GPS was GREAT to have.  Easy to use.  We mostly used the car to move from place to place and went on a day trip with it once.  Another day we took a day trip to Pisa and took the train cause everything we read said driving in Pisa would be a pain and parking would be far away from the sites.

I've had to prepare myself for that. I can get all day out of my phone now. I call it a remedial phone. It's not quite a plain jane phone as we get the internet, but it sure as hell isn't a smart phone. I think we'll invest in home, work and car chargers and I'm sure we'll be fine.

H is obsessed with the Evo because his best friend has one. He's in a serious bro-mance with this guy. But in his defense, Sprint is cheaper that Verizon.

Ooh, Estes Park is pretty!  Lots of elk, and Rocky Mountain NP has some of the best hiking in the state.  There's also a good bit of touristy shopping but... meh.  And it's only about an hour from me!

  • I didn't want the X because it was too big to fit in my pocket.  I like to carry it when I go to meetings, and pockets are the best way to do that, IMO.

I HIGHLY recommend Brugges, Belgium.  That was AWESOME.  The hotels are pricey, but it was SUCH a cool place.  Definitely worth at least one night, if not two.

You can take the rental through the chunnel (I assume), but then you have to drive on the left in the UK of course.  :D  We saw lots of British cars in Normandy (we went through Calais), but it was strange seeing the driver on the other side in just a few cars.

Honestly, I'd look for other tranportation options in the UK and save the rental for mainland Europe.

  • I've only ever had Verizon.  Will you be on Sprint then LVB?  I don't even know what phones they have to pick from.  I had the blackberry storm before this and really liked it.  But now that I have the droid I realize how much better it is.  The battery life does suck though.

Oh, and I love that the Kindle app is on it.  I already downloaded a book!

I really don't want to use a car for a lot of driving. More of an experience type thing. I think 2 days max, in 2 different places. I got around just fine with RyanAir and the train. Maybe our next trip to Europe will be different. I've had my chance to see all the sites and now H wants to too. I'm hoping our next trip will be more relaxed and more about experiencing Europe, not just being real tourists.
