Not Engaged Yet

Not Yet But Sooooonnnnnn..... :D

Hey, I have been apart of The Knot for a while, but mostly lurking and reading articles that get sent to my email. :) But since the "DAY" is coming up, I figured I would introduce myself.

I have been with my amazing guy for 27 months (yes, we count months)... and he has seen me through a bunch of insane things (and vice versa)... and he is still here. He is an amazing role model for my daughter, and seeing them together always brings a smile to my face.

I have been passively planning this wedding for a long time, but just looking at things and saying "ooo, I want that"... not actively planning. I already have my dress. It was brand-new with DB tags at a thrift store that I frequent. I just had to alter it, and voila. :D My style is very DIY and Budget-y... lol.

So, yeah..... that is me. If you have any questions, just let me know. I am an open book..... :D

You've already had your 'first fitting' for a wedding dress before you are even engaged?

Edited to fix me reading incorrectly.

  • Actually, I have the dress in my possession. Fitted and everything.

Five months then, 27 months now.

  • I can only do one a day. Congrats on your... pre-planning?

  • OP, I don't know how you do it. I'm not engaged yet. It'll probably be at some point in the not too distant future, but the thought of trying on wedding dresses does not excite me. It makes me feel that little sinking feeling. And not because this man is not the most awesome thing on earth, but because HOLY CRAP that's a lot to plan and worry about, and right now we're just trying to pay off our freakin' credit cards. Also because buying pants is traumatic for me sooo. Yeah.

Before I came here I didn't even think about the fact that you shouldn't be planning your wedding intensely before six months out. It just felt like it was a huge life event so you should be planning right away. I didn't know. I knew nothing about weddings. I got schooled. I'm still new here. And given that a few close family members are doing the quick wedding and I've given them the side eye, I see what the ladies here mean about relaxing, enjoying your life, letting life happen. You only get to be a girlfriend for a little while! It's fun actually. But once you're a wife, you're a wife forever (well, that's the hope anyway).  There's no going back to gf. Know what I mean?

So I'm asking with all sincerity and no snark: Are you sure you're not doing this maybe a little prematurely?
  • Wow..... Um, Divorced as of Feb 19. P0tt3rgl33k (major HP & Glee fan) and yeah, 27 months.... :D

I'd keep you dress in the back of the closet for as long as possible. I know someone who was told repeatedly by her BF that they were going to get engaged, and she ended up with a dress but no BF.

    Be careful with preplanning! Please.

I wasn't planning on the dress... It was just a MAJOR DEAL and I could not pass it up....
and honestly, I love weddings... and I hope to do something better with this one than my prevous one (3-day engagement)..... I am fine not going back to GF. I want to be his wife.... :D FOREVER!!! :D But thanks for the advice...
  • Why? Why do you count your adult relationship, that is over two years long, in months? I don't get it.

My parents were engaged for two months before getting married. My mother planned a fabulous wedding (I wasn't there, I just saw pictures)

My friend is getting married in September, she was engaged in February, so six months, she's got it all planned out and is just sitting back and relaxing (on a cruise right now too, I'm jealous).

Long story short: short engagements =/= not being able to plan a wedding or buying things before being engaged.

I'm so confused....so you finalized your divorce Feb. 19th, you have been with your current BF since Jan 2011 and bought your "future wedding dress" November 2011 all while still working out a divorce? Why....?

ETA: Don't you just want to chill for a second?
In Response to Re: Not Yet But Sooooonnnnnn..... :DSo, I got a letter from my apartment manager, saying that my bf (of five months) was over his stay limit and needed to be put on a lease or leave. I thought that they wouldnt care anymore if we were married. So, while he was playing Metroid Prime, I said that we should get married that Friday (pay day). He, without looking up, agreed. That was Tuesday. Thursday night, our direct deposit went through and we went to Wal-Mart. (That was also when I told my mom what was going on and begged her to come the next day. She couldnt make it.) I got a skirt and shoes. He got a shirt and tie. We also got silver rings. Maybe $100 bucks.... Then the marriage license (another $50)... and that was it. Courthouse wedding, six people there....

Seven years later... we are now in the middle of a (getting bitter) custody battle. At this point, I just want out. I just want to be divorced, so that I can marry the man of my dreams, who I have been with for 20 months.

That wedding will be totally different. As I am still chained to the ex, we are not in active planning stage... Just wishing stage. :) This will be the wedding that I wanted. This will be the one that my family can come to. This will be the one with an actual reception. This will be the one with the amazing dress. Much bigger and much more us.... :D
    Posted by p0tt3rgl33k
In the interest of full disclosure, I thought I'd put this here. What I get from this is that you not only bought a dress before you were engaged, but while you were actually married to someone else?

I was done with that one when I left.... In Sept 2010. The divorce just took forever to complete, because we are both rotten with paperwork.... and I have been chilling... I want to be with the one that I love on paper. :D
  • hmm.... i am trying to make myself more clear..... The dress was a MAJOR BARGAIN... :D Like 50 bucks (brand new, still with DB tags -that said 450.00-).... That is the only planning thing that I have done.... I havent picked a date/venue/tux place/bridesmaids/.... nothing. Just that dress and drooling over things that I want.
