Posted by JenGin74
The big difference there are that grants are given to people who have a high statistical chance of not only being successful in higher education, but going on to give far more back to society than the cost of the grant; e.g. take a smart kid with good effort and motivation but who (ironic this is topical to the thread) is one of nine living on welfare in housing projects, give him or her college, they're very likely to complete it successfully, become a valuable contributor to society, give back and who knows, maybe help the relatives get off welfare.

As opposed to just give anyone who got pregnant money so they can finish school in the hope that they do.
In Response to Re: Can you believe this?? : No, it contradicts the idea that having money is the prerequisite for that priviledge.  MissCourtney could have totally gone to college, using some of those grants as a matter of fact, AFTER her kids were older and she was able to afford it.  She also could have gone to school part time and worked full  time instead of vice versa.  I'm not saying she didn't deserve to go to school.  I'm just saying that she did not deserve to take those resources away from other parents who were doing absolutely everything in their power to feed and clothe their kids and still coming up short just because she "wanted to finish school".

I see what you're saying, I really do.  Welfare isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I disagree. Without higher education she probably would not be able to be employed like she is now. More good paying jobs than not require a college education. The government offers grants and loans to people so they can have access to higher education, which is further proof that the goverment thinks EVERYONE should have access to higher education.

Would you prefer that misscourtney stay in a low-paying job and work pay check to pay check?

Jeez Jen, why are you all having sex and junk like you're a married adult.

I don't think higher education should be a right, but I also don't think it's a good fit for all people. I wish that high schools would be restructured so that 18 year olds could go out into the world and actually know wtf they were doing. Give them classes in banking, finances, family planning, job hunting, etc.

H is a prime example. He went to college because it's what you did. He dicked around for 3 years and finally dropped out (partly for family reasons, partly because he was failing). When he joined the Marines he shot to the top of his class instantly and excelled.

Problem of course is more people who take the money won't finish school than those who would; I think its better off just forcing people to live with their choices and earmark (my political word of the day) that money to grants for people who are statistically likely to excel in higher education.  I think tax money is better spent on people who have the highest chance of dramatically bettering their lives (scholarships for the poor) and the lives of others than on those who may or may not use it to their advantage (welfare for 3+ years hoping the person finishes school).  Courtney is to be commended that she did what she set out to do, but a large percentage would not, meaning someone else who probably would have done well with a scholarship didn't get one.

That one I think comes down to statistics; there are probably numbers out there that show that sending them back into society after serving their sentence with a degree results in X chance of them coming back, where no degree is Y chance of coming back, and the cost of the college education is less than the cost of housing the percentage that comes back.

I do like prisons that make you work though; if you're in jail, you should have four things comprise your day; sleep, eat, work, school, forget recreation, tv's, letter writing time, etc.

My FI is an MD; I have no idea how she does that or how she dealt with eight years of college and four more of residency, but the funny thing is that if you ask her about financial stuff, try to explain mortgage interest and amortization,  or several other things many of us probably take for granted.... no idea lol.

My latest vent is that we need to teach a high school course on "how to fill out forms". We have a form that has 6 parts
Student name
Student ID
Student Signature
Parent Name
Parent Signature
Date

86 people could not complete that form in entirety. Most of the kids said "Oh I didn't read the whole thing". Seriously? Whole thing? It's 6 lines long!

Me:This is so and so, Can I speak to the manager?

Tenant: I'm one of the managers.

Me: I need to know if you're coming to such & such on this date.

When I worked at a liquor store, one of my coworkers was complaining because she had been scheduled for more than 19 hours in a week, and if she wanted to keep her welfare, she had to be 19 hours or under, and she proceeded to tell the boss this. I don't know how she didn't get fired. I almost punched her in the face for that.

ETA: But her baby daddy had a really high paying job and so she was rolling in a brand new Escalade. But they weren't married, so his income didn't affect her and she got gov't assistance even though she was living pretty high.

Does it vary from state to state?
