Rescheduling a bridal shower??

I am the matron of honor for my best friend's upcoming wedding in August. The other bridesmaids and I are hosting a "friends/co-workers" shower. The bride had another family shower this past weekend. Our shower is scheduled for June 15th. The problem is almost everyone has RSVP'd no. The bride is very upset about this and I feel terrible. There will be more people in the wedding party at the shower than guests! Only 6 of the 24 guest we invited RSVP'd yes. I know this is a busy time of year and unfortunately a lot of the guests had other legitimate conflicts like other showers to attend, wedding on the same date, etc. Should I offer to reschedule the shower at this point or should I just go with it? Can you even reschedule a bridal shower? I've never heard of such a thing being done. The shower was supposed to be an outdoor event at my house. We rented a lovely tent and were having it catered. I am not even sure that is necessary now with a small number of people. I think a luncheon or something would be more intimate with the small number of guests that we have. Would it be acceptable to change the venue to make it more intimate or is that also a no-no? I guess I am just a loss and feel very bad and don't know what to do! Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.

Re: Rescheduling a bridal shower??

  • I wouldn't reschedule. One of my showers only had 6 people and it was a lot of fun. I do think you can change the location though to make it more intimate if you want.

How many are actually planning to come? I don't know that this would necessarily change my answer, but I'm curious.

Edited because: My actual answer was not to reschedule.  We always have showers on a Sunday because people tend to have more time than on a Saturday during the summer/wedding season.  But that ship has sailed.  Unless it's 1 person coming, it could offend people.  I'd be pretty upset if I had RSVPed yes, but that my presence wasn't good enough to still have the party.  "Yeah, you and these 5 other people were coming, but EVERYONE ELSE wasn't."  Womp womp womp. I think I'm a pretty fun time even without 50 other people there.

  • I'd let the show go on.. everyone planning on attending will be inconvenienced by the reschedule and there's no guarantee that rescheduling will result in a higher turn out. I don't think it's a bad idea to downgrade the size of the tent so it doesn't feel so empty...

  • There will be 12 people total, 6 of those are guests and 6 of those are the wedding party plus the bride.

  • I think 12 is great. That sounds like a wonderful shower.

    Agreed!
  • My shower was last weekend, and we had about 12 too.  It was great!

  • I think small showers can be a lot of fun.  So I'd keep it going.
  • 12 is a great number. The bride will still have a lovely time, I promise. :)
  • 12 is a wonderful number. Just do it.
  • Oh, definitely go ahead. 12 is fine! Sometimes a bigger group can be overwhelming, anyhow.

  • The friend/co-workers shower thrown for me was just 11-14 if I recall as well. And it was very nice, especially because I had time to talk to everyone.

Once I was the guest at a larger shower (20+ for sure) and the only person I knew was the bride. And almost everyone else knew other people and it was just incredibly awkward for me as I tend to be a wall flower around strangers.
Small works well in both scenarios: Tight knit group where everyone knows each other and can gab, or a group with some people who don't know that many people, but can be in a quieter, less intimidating setting and can get to know each other.

I'm sure it's disappointing for her that so many people said no, but as PPs have said, weekends in the summer (especially a prime wedding month like June), people are going to just be very busy (I was only home and free for three weekends all of last summer). Just lots of vacations, family stuff and previous engagements. People still love her. It's all cool.

    Have fun!
  • I say get some extra wine out and have a lovely evening.
