Honeymoon suggestions

Looking for suggestions for our honeymoon.  We are really open to anything, $5,000 - $6,000 or so budget.  We were looking at the typical Sandals honeymoons but I'm worried 1. It's kinda like Carnival Cruises - a little cheesy, food not great, and 2. We'd get bored

I've never been overseas and would love to go but can we do it on that budget?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Re: Honeymoon suggestions

  • FloridaBride, mind me asking the name of the resort?  I'm in Kissimmee, by the way!

Wedding is also on a Sunday (March 30th) and longer cruises usually leave on a Sunday.
  • You have MANY options within the Caribbean or you could possibly even swing Hawaii. If you really want to be active, you can even do Europe. You need to decide what type of vacation you want ad what your priorities are and then I recommend working with a travel agent to get a sense of what is out there to meet your needs.

  • Thanks Jells, the fiance met with a travel agent yesterday but wondered if you all had any recommendations.
  • you may want to reword your OP-those who love sandals and/or carnival may be a bit insulted.

whar rime of year? how long for the trip? what do you want-foodie? adventure? wine? relaxation? history? shopping? where have you already been? give us some ideas-i could list hundreds of things with the little criteria you provided.

  • Eh- WTF?! My computer is messed up and won't let me edit. This is what I said: The reason why my response was generic was because you actually have a decent budget, so there are many options, but you did not give specifics on what you really want, other than something "not cheesy" (which is subjective as we all have different ideas of what cheesy is.) So, you're going to get a TON of different recommendations from knotties who just want to share their HM plans because they are excited about them. But, you may only find that 2 of those recs fit what you want and only only realize that after you looked into all 10+ recommendations. If you provide some more specifics, like @ali suggested, then we can better help you narrow things down and actually be helpful.

  • We're doing Hawaii on that budget.
  • You could do Secrets Maroma Beach on that budget in Riveria Maya; fantastic HM spot although it's pretty low key in case that's not what you are looking for (although we did think the food was good!)
  • I was generic because we are really open to anything within the budget.  We just want to try something new.
  • Wedding is March 30th; both have our passports; beach, history, a little adventurous, can do a schedule but also like to not have a schedule, like to explore; rather pay extra for better quality.  The reason why I said "cheesy" was because the last time I went on Carnival the linens smelled like the kitchen and the quality of the food was more quantity than quality, IMHO.  Not experiencing Sandals yet, I'm leery it would be the same type of atmosphere.  Pardon me if it sounds snotty and insulted anyone.
  • LauraKitsune, you put it into words for me.  Exactly how I feel.
  • I just got back from Kauai a few weeks ago and I think it's a good fit. Activities are plenty if you want them, there is a little bit of history on the island (Kilauea Lighthouse, Russian Fort, Cooks Landing), the beach, and you can stay in an area that isn't quite as touristy (Poipu tends to be a little more busy than Princeville.) Also, check out Belize or Costa Rica, both of which offer in land options and options on the beach, so you can do a mix of things on your trip by jumping around.

  • Based on your feedback, I think that any of the Hawaiian islands or countries within Central America (Belize/Costa Rica/Nicaragua/Panama) would work well for you. Additionally, I think that St. Martin/St. Maarten would also be a good fit: beautiful beaches, amazing food, lots of activities plus even some history. We went there for our honeymoon in March for 10 days and had fantastic weather. I've got multiple entries in my travel blog from the trip if you are interested in learning more.
  • we spent 10 days in Puerto Rico on less than that budget.  We stayed at locally owned cottages on the beach, and hung out in local neighborhoods and ate local foods. We loved it.  The only downside is... Puerto Rico is very poor.  If you are away from the resorts, you will see that poverty every day.  We didn't mind that, because it's the reality of the island.  We didn't want to be isolated from the reality.   But, just a head's up, in case you are concerned about that.
  • Thanks TravelingJen, blogs are blocked at work so can't read now but will later tonight.  (Don't tell them I'm checking this at work!)
  • FierceFemme, I lived in Puerto Rico when I was 3-11 so I am very familiar with what it has to offer and the prices but the fiance wants to go somewhere we've both never been.  I keep telling him that I haven't seen the island as a tourist so going back would be new to me (and I've only been back to the island once for a funeral since we moved to Florida 20 years ago).
  • The travel agent sent us an email today saying Europe is outside our budget.
  • where are you flying out of? i did a week in italy (half florence and half rome.I had been to each 2x before but i took my mom and it was her first time ) last winter for 1500 a person so no way you can't do it for double that.

the term 'europe' is rather broad though. anywhere in particular you want to go?

We were going to do Europe or Turkey on $5,000 - 6,000. Sure, we would have been eating peanut butter sandwiches the whole time because we wanted to go for over a week, but we're doing that in Hawaii anyways. Check out some other travel agents. Look on travelzoo too - they have great deals. Just make sure to read the fine print!

Also, check out cruises. You'd pay for airfare, but your food, room and travel between countries are included.

ETA: I saw that you didn't like Carnival. I'm a fan of Norwegian - it's very laid back and I found the food to be quite delicious!
  • With that budget, I would look into Canoun or Nevis. My dream!
  • Flying out from Orlando Florida -- we suggested Italy, Greece, UK, Belgium or the Netherlands.
  • Thanks winelover, I've never been on anything but Carnival.  Friends love Royal Caribbean but the honeymoon would be during relocation period so the European ones are out.  For the Caribbean ones, fiance is military and they are apparently not allowed to go to many Mexico cities and the rest require a ton of paperwork.

I think your travel agent is on crack.  With some smart planning you can easily do Europe, I think.  I don't think you can do serious hopping all over from England to France to Italy, etc. but you could travel to a few cities nearby (in Italy, for example), on your budget.

Have you considered Belize? While there you could take a short trip to Guatamala and check out the Mayan ruins.

go to a new travel agent or price it out yourselves. you can see that you can do it.

  • I think overseas will be hard on that budget unfortunately. Just go to expedia and look at the airfare prices. :/ We're personally taking a 10 day honeymoon in Alaska. Half of the trip is a cruise and the other half is a land tour at Denali. Everything, including the cruise, lodge in Denali, meals, airfare, and excursions is under 5,000.
Talk to a travel agent of visit vacationstogo.com. You can find a lot of amazing deals on there and their cruise specialists are very helpful.
  • I just looked and march 31 to april 9 is 1179 a person on united from orlando to rome. that's less than half of your budget. TOTALLY do able.

there were no direct flights when i did that search. you might be better off driving to another airport (even if it's a few hours away) and flying direct.

  • If you really want to do Europe, you can do it on your budget. Look around online yourself and/or find a different TA.

I will also agree with a PP that pretty much any of the main 4 Hawaiian islands would be doable and meet your requirements as to activities, beach time, etc. We did Oahu and loved it because it was a mix of being busy and doing activities with relaxing by the infinity pool and ocean.

  • You could easily do Ireland on half of that budget.  Check out Sceptre Tours; we went to Ireland via them (via Travelzoo deal) in the fall and had an amazing time. Write up is in my Mrs Blog.
  • Thank you all for your suggestions.  It's much appreciated.
