taking off the ring

Re: taking off the ring

  • I don't sleep with mine on. (I find it gets caught on the blankets.)  I'm too paranoid to wear it in the shower.  If I go to the gym from work I keep it on. (Lately I've been kickboxing so I wear it on a chain)  Leaving it in the car makes me too nervous.  I also take it off while cleaning/handling meat.

I had a huge dilemma a few weekends ago.  We were out of town for a wedding on FI's side.  We knew the next day we were going to the beach.  If I left my ring home and didn't wear my ring I would have had to answer a million questions as to where it was.  We were only in the hotel one night so we were checked out already when heading to the beach.  Should I leave it in the car?  Wear it to the beach and just not go far into the ocean?  I was so worried the entire time.

  • I take it off to shower (scared of it going down the drain!!), or wash dishes.  If I am cooking something messy or cleaning I usually take it off then too.  I do wear it to sleep though.
  • I got the crazy look from my supervisor and a newly engaged coworker the other day when we were discussing wearing engagement rings.  I take it off to sleep, shower, do dishes, or anything that involves getting my hands dirty.

Ditto this. I even take it off to wash my hands most of the time.
  • I always sleep with mine, but I take it off to shower, do dishes, or swim. I'm kind of frustrated that the white gold coating is already wearing off. My e ring and wedding ring are totally different colors!

I worry about this.  My e-ring needs to be dipped now and again. My wedding band should not.

You tell them you're going to the beach and left it at home so it wouldn't get lost.

I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

    This already happened but thanks!

  • I only wear mine when I'm fully "dressed" for work or to go out. Otherwise, if I'm at home/at the gym/running errands, I don't wear it. And as soon as I walk in the house in the evenings and put on my comfy clothes, it comes off. I may be a weirdo, but as much as I love my ring, I find most jewelry really irritating to wear.
    I'm in this camp.
    Me too!
Me three (six?)!  I mostly wear my ring when I am out of the house.  DH rarely wears his ring (he can't really wear it during work and just doesn't usually think of it.  I love my ring (it was my grandmother's) but we are just as married whether our rings are on or not, so I don't worry too much about it.

  • I take mine off to shower, do the dishes, when I'm painting (just re-painted the living room and kitchen in my house), when I'm making meatloaf/meatballs, etc.

  • Um, you're welcome?

I'm aware it already happened. You seem very concerned that people would wonder why you weren't wearing your ring?  WTF cares what they think?

I agree with Sylvia.  I get the people who just love wearing jewelry and their rings.  I love my ring but when I get home, besides my bra that is the first thing that comes off.  But what I don't get are people that are overly concerned about their rings when they take them off or what people will think if they don't wear them.  If you take your rings off put them some place safe.  Shit can always happen and something could happen to your rings but constantly worrying is just not good for your health.  And regarding what people think or say, it really doesn't matter.  A ring makes you no less married so who cares if people ask where it is?

  • I personally feel very strange not having my ring on outside of the house.  But that doesn't make us any more of less engaged.

I was at a wedding to celebrate my FI's cousin and his new wife.  I was trying to avoid the family  asking where my ring was.  I don't care what they have to say.  I just didn't want to spend the night saying the same thing over and over again when asked.

  • I'm always in the house doing house work.so I hardly wear it. I forget almost all the time when I go out.
  • My hand feels odd when I leave the house without a ring but when I'm home, it's hardly ever on.  I'd be afraid of losing it in the pool or down the drain when I'm washing my hands.  I also have his initial tattooed under where the band lies so in order to avoid questions about that, I definitely keep it on when I'm not at home.

So you think every single member of your family would notice?  Pretentious much?

I was with you until this. She's saying that in her experience with her family, they DO notice and they DO ask lots of questions about it. I don't think it's pretentious at all.

If she had said, "everyone thinks my ring is so amazing and beautiful so they're always asking to see it and they totally notice when I don't wear it because I'm so amazing and my family and friends are obsessed with me..." then, I'd call pretentious. Not in this situation and I think it's twisting words to make that connection.
I didn't read it that way, but thanks for playing.
    Um, you're welcome?

  • I take mine off when I swim, shower, clean, or if it is really hot outside and my fingers are swollen.
  • I never take mine off; I'm way too scared to lose it. When it comes to jewelry if I'm not wearing it I lose it.

Thankfully FI knew to get me something low profile since I'm pretty rough on my hands. I work in a restaurant, ride horses, cook, work out and will be a nurse so he knew better than to get me something huge.

  • My best friend is a journalist, and she has to attend a lot of events for work. She doesn't wear her wedding or engagement rings to the events because some of them are in pretty dodgy areas and she doesn't want to make herself a target (very smart, I think). At one of the events some guy started hitting on her, and when she said, very politely, that she was very flattered but also very married, he had a total hissy fit because she wasn't wearing a ring and that's "false advertising".

Honest to goodness, there are some crazy people out there...

  • I take mine off before showers, dishes, cleaning, beach or to sleep. I usually go without it on the weekends unless I'm going out to eat or mall or movies etc. but not just to get groceries. FI sometimes gets upset I don't wear it, but he gets over it.

  • I take mine off to put on lotion, knead bread dough or mix meat loaf and for some really dirty jobs like gardening.  I never take it off to shower, wash dishes, clean or workout.  I did take it off once while snowmachining because it was badly pressing into my finger.

Granted, I have very simple rings that don't stick out or anything.  My engagement ring is a gold band with a row of diamonds set into it so the diamonds are flush with the surface of the ring.  And my wedding band is a hammered gold band.

My e-ring was too big, once I got it back resized I now pretty much never take it off except to clean it. When I don't feel my ring I develop a small rush of anxiety, it's probably because I used to misplace jewelry a lot.

Recently I started weight training and one day after working out I absentmindedly touched my ring finger and freaked out because I didn't feel my ring. I left my ring in the garage all day and didn't know it till hours later. And that is why I leave my ring on!  -- And bought training gloves so I don't have to take off my ring.

  • I take mine off when I shower, do the dishes, am dealing with paint (I work in a kindergarten class so the paint can get messy!) or anything dirty, like gardening.
  • I wear mine during the day, at night I put it back into the box it came in, or else I would totally lose it by putting it some random place mindlessly.
If it goes in its box, I know it's safe.
It goes there when I take a shower as well.

Please tell me you would actually say this.  That's hilarious

  • I'm used to wearing rings all the time, ever since I was a child. Before my ring was properly sized, I only wore it for showing it off at special occasions. Now that it's perfectly sized, I wear it almost all the time. I take it off for doing dishes, gardening, washing the dog, or anything else particularly messy. However, I have a special place in the house were I put all my rings when I take them off.

  • I only take my rings off while working out because my fingers tend to get puffy.  Also the occasional cooking when I have to mix stuff with my hands, but that's not really very often.
  • I too take mine off to sleep-- I wore it at first, but found it uncomfortable.  I also take it off when I shower, swim, do dishes, etc.
