Compromise on Place Settings

So we finally got registered this weekend except for the thing we both care the most about---our place settings.

We have been living together for nearly 7 years and have upgraded most of our things during this time--except for our plates--and now I think I understand why. We are on complete polar opposite ends of the spectrum in this area and I'm trying to figure out where to go without either of us feeling disappointed (and yes, he truly has an opinion on this).

We are not registering for "formal" china per se, we are looking for quality, functional and versatile every day plates.

I really want white plates...

Things like Royal Doulton's Mode, Royal Doulton's 1815, Noritake's Colorwave White Coupe (though I could also live with the square)--links are embedded

He really, REALLY dislikes those. Finds them too "boring" Instead preferring things like the Nortitake Colorwave Graphite square (too harsh for my tastes) and Denby Halo (I'm sorry, but I just can't....)---links are embedded here too

Are there ways to come to a compromise here? Ways to piece together a primarily "white" table with some interesting accents? (In a way that also makes sense on a registry---bonus!)

I know in the grand scheme of things they are just plates

But I am uncomfortable enough with registering in general, we DO need new plates, and if I'm going to "ask" for something I want it to be something that we both like.

Any suggestions are MUCH appreciated!

WOW! Those are very different! I prefer your style - OMG that Halo is awful! :-p

Is color an option? You could get the Fiesta Dinnerware line and get a color or two that works for both of you. Have you checked out crate and barrel? What about clear plates? I love my everyday Correlle. Have you checked them out?

We just bought white dinnerware....at first when I mentioned the idea, my DH wasn't too thrilled. I told him food just looks better on white dinnerware! He, fortunately for me, said that it's just a plate to hold his food so he didn't care in the long run. Now that we have it, he really likes it! The white dinnerware also pops against almost any kind of placemat or tablecoth. This is where I really plan on bringing in the color (and you can easily change it for the seasons!). I'd register for two complete sets, that way you can get the bonuses. Maybe go with a not as simple white set and then a colorful one? Or a not super bold pattern set? I don't particularly care for your FI's picks, but yours are super simple as well.

I like the fiesta idea.

The only thing I can think of that's white, a little modern, and still has something interesting going on with it is Lenox Aspen Ridge. You could also look into various Juliska lines if you are open to the rusticated country chic look (ie: Berry & Thread). Same for Pottery Barn (ie: Gabriella)

H and I are like you guys, and we compromised on fiesta. People tend to love it or hate it. We love it because it gave him the many sizes he wanted, and it gave me something other than white. Our entire apartment is white, and I like color. Fiesta DOES have a white version, so if that's your jam you could register primarily for white and let him pick another one or two colors for some accent pieces. Their lunch plates, for instance, are a great size, and smaller than their dinner plates. We also use some of their smaller bowls a lot. You can mix and match that way. Really, the versatility in the different sized pieces is amazing. We've used everything, and we registered for a lot. For the people who hate it, I would challenge them to find anything close to the sheer number of options you get with Fiesta. H also dropped a plate on our tile floor this weekend and then a mug on top of the plate. We didn't even have a scratch.

White is classic, clean, and simple. Let the food decorate the plate.

Maybe he can chime in on table linens, like tablecloths, cloth napkins, etc.?

Maybe he can select some serving pieces or table linens. I like whiteware because it's classic and you can punch it up with fun trays or bowls for serving, and it's easy to change it up with new table linens or whatever.

I agree with ElcaB and emmyg65. Classic, white plates always look the best and never go out of style. If your FI wants to jazz it up you two can pick out some table linens or neat serving bowls or something.

I went with the Noritake colorwave graphite myself (not the square), but the thing I like about it is that, like fiestaware, you can mix and match pieces/colors. Have you thought of that option?

I'm not opposed to going with primarily white and then adding in some mix/match colors. (like the Colorwave and I had no idea Fiesta came in white) He could care less about the linens and we actually have TONS of white serving pieces that we have acquired over the years (that he likes--probably b/c they have interesting shapes).

I went into BBB last night and actually liked the Mikasa Swirl (link) which comes in white and graphite (it reads black or dark grey on screen but is actually a medium grey in person and doesn't look too harsh)

I would go with the white plates, they never go out of style (unless you pick an unusual shape). I would bring in color with chargers (they can stay on the table) and accent pieces.
