Share your favorite beauty tips.

I thought this would be a fun post.

Now, I can't speak for the long term effects of this, but I tried it because FI suggested it. And it worked SO well! I had two small zits on my face. I dabbed mouthwash on them and they were gone by the next day.

Coconut oil also is amazing. I've been using it on my skin. It's gotten rid of the darker circles under my eyes and fixed a dry patch of skin on my nose.

Also, I shave with conditioner. It makes my skin super soft.

Toothpaste works well for this, too -- both will dry out the pimple (they have an astringent effect) and remove some of the oil.

My mum swears by putting a little Vaseline on your lashes to make them fuller and longer. I used to do it, but now I'm trying to avoid petrochemicals in makeup and skincare if I can. You do have to be mindful not to put it everywhere though, because it can stimulate hair growth.

I've become a skincare junkie, so I'm not so much for the home remedies anymore, unfortunately.

  • I have heard vodka works to shrink pores. However, do I really want to waste perfectly good alcohol?

I use Balmex (for baby diaper rashes) on chapped lips. I also use tea tree oil on cold sores. Clears them up very quickly! On my hair, I use monoi oil from Tahiti to keep it healthy and shiny. My hairdresser mixes it in with my color as well.

Non-home remedies- I do not wear face make up except in formal situations. I use Prevage from Elizabeth Arden as my everyday moisturizer and get microderm treatments and facials several times a year. I do not have/am not having kids, so part of my extra income goes to taking care of my skin!

  • I suck at beauty stuff and will just soak up all of your awesome tips.

Plus one to this. I told my BFF/BM that she had to go to Sephora with me and be my makeup consultant for the wedding...because otherwise I am going to look like a clown. I never ever wear make up ever and my skin care routine consists of using a St. Ives facewash in the morning, Mary Kay moisturizer and then the same routine at night with a different facewash that I can't remember the name of.

  • Use hemroid cream under your eyes to get rid of dark circles. And dont pick at pimples.

Ditto. However, I will say that I used to have breakouts pretty regularly but FI got me using his Ponds Face Lotion (that his mom got him hooked on - he has really bad dry skin and eczema) and now I rarely ever get breakouts on my face. Miracle cream I tell ya! One of my good friends also told me to use coconut oil on the ends of my hair (my hair breaks off constanly and I can't get it to grow any longer because of the breakage) before I go to sleep and let it set over night to stop my hair from breaking so I'm going to try that here this weekend.
  • Also, this is a really cool company - 100% Pure. I use a lot of their facial cleaners. The products are good and not that pricey.
  • I use a Braun Silk-épil Epilator on my underarms. I rarely get ingrown hairs and my underarms look and feel good - shaving tore them up. After a few drink I also use it on my bikini line, but it hurts like a moffo…but is so much better than shaving.

I slather Aquaphor Healing Ointment on my face one a week at night to keep my skin soft and prevent wrinkles. At 35 I still get carded everywhere.

I was told to use the Aquaphor on my scars after I had skin cancer removed. I didn't noticed it helped, but I am def going to try this for my face!

@polarbearfitz I love beauty stuff (I'm even working on becoming a wedding makeup artist) and will give out as many pointers as anyone wants, I've got a million.
Coconut oil is my beauty-related crack.  I have a jar in my bathroom and no matter how many times I try out new moisturizers, after a week I'm going back to that jar. I recently made this soap scrub by melting down coconut oil, mixing in coconut sugar, and letting it solidify- its a REALLY good exfoliant and it leaves my skin baby butt soft.  FI borrowed it once and even he was like "Holy crap, my skin!"

I also love using baking soda as an exfoliant on my face, it leaves my skin super clean without drying me out.  I also apply this mixture of vitamin E and almond oil I bought at a vitamin shop as a night cream, focusing on my eye area and lashes- my lashes look SO MUCH BETTER than they did before I started doing this!  Either they're really nicely conditioned or growing more, either way they are noticeably better.

And if you're ever looking to spoil the crap out of yourself, I mix a scrub of two parts sugar/baking soda, one part olive oil, run a bath, slather this all over my body (Not on my lady bits though, lady bits do not like sugar)  and soak in the bath- the olive oil doesn't mix with water so it just soaks into your skin for as long as you leave it.  Shower off or wipe off the extra oil and your whole body is SUPER soft.  I did this before prom years back and plan on doing this the day of my wedding.

  • I love doing eye make up. When I do my eyes, I always crimp my eyelashes at the base, then near the edge. And don't hold it down, you have to "pulse' it. Then mascara needs to be wiggled on to hold the curl.

Not sure other make up because I'm hopelessly lost with the rest.

  • Question for the ladies who use coconut oil...do you just buy the coconut oil from the grocery store or is this something else?

    Stuck in stupid box!
Good to know! That's great. I curl my eyelashes every day but I'm going to try that.

I buy it at Fairway. It comes in a little jar.
  • Ooooh, I love all things beauty and make-up, too.  The absolute #1 tip I have is to start young with the sunscreen in your face lotion and SPF, everywhere, all the time.  I am obsessed with Arbonne products-- they're the only thing that cures my eczema-- but they're pricy.  Anything with sunscreen is better than nothing.

For actual makeup tips, I feel like my whole face started coming together when I learned to lightly fill in my eyebrows.  It really defines my face and I feel like I need less eye makeup.

My usual face: tinted moisturizer, a little cream blush, eyebrows, mascara, and bright lipstick.  It takes five minutes and I frequently get compliments on my skin or my lipstick color.

  • @polarbearfitz yup, I buy it at either Trader Joes or Shoprite (I think they stock it in their "Healthy" aisles) it comes in solid form in  a jar and you just warm it up with your fingers.

I think you ladies have inspired me to go have a 'beauty afternoon.' My eyebrows have been heavily neglected, I would love a manicure, and I haven't had a hair cut in almost a year (my stylist and friend moved away). Time to get puuurrrdddyyy.

    @HaileyDancingBear and @ClimbingBrideNY - Thank you!

This. I started tinting my eyebrows and eyelashes along wi my brow waxes, though I don't always do my eyelashes. I'm fortunate to have naturally thick eyebrows, so the tinting is enough and I rarely fill them. After about 3 weeks, the tint will start to fade and I freak out. It really does make a huge difference.

Is this something for those with lighter or less defined eyebrows? (excuse all my questions ladies)
  • @polarbearfitz no problem, I love this stuff!
I think filling in brows is an important aspect of any makeup application- The eyebrows are kinda like a frame for your eyes.  I have medium brown brows and I always look my best when they're groomed and filled in.  I also think when girls with otherwise light brows pencil it in, as long as they don't go TOO dark (For instance if your eyebrows are blonde, go with a VERY light brown/dirty blonde color for the brows) it looks stunning, but it can be a shock.

The first time I penciled in my MOH's brows while practicing my makeup applications, it looked nice but it freaked her out a bit because her brows are otherwise too light to be visible, and this was the first time she saw herself with brows!  She's warmed up to the look since then and even bought a brow pencil for her to use at home, but it definitely took getting used to for her.

  • @JCBride2014 -- I've been using Arbonne for almost a year now and I do love it.

However, I recently got a deluxe sample of some Fresh products from Sephora, and I'm blown away! It contained their Soy Cleanser, Seaberry Face Oil, and the Lotus Youth Preserve face cream. My normally dry skin has never been close to this soft and hydrated, and I have an amazing glow. It has also started visibly evening out a little redness I have, which is amazing! I'm hooked.

Yeah, and some of the stuff I really wanted there was the super fresh handmade stuff that they don't do online because it would go bad :(
She totally knows who I am too, my MOH met her at a party, and divulged the info that she was my best friend and showed her a photo- she didn't know until after the party, when she told me one of the 3 (Yes THREE) different lies this girl tells about her and FI, how scary this chick actually is.
I didn't realize she worked there until MOH and I went in and she recognized us.  She pulled out the stops for me, she combined all 3 of her lies!  She also told me she was going to dye her hair the exact same color as mine.

Oh creepy, and yucky of her to be like that! You should complain and get her fired, lol JK. But then you would at least be able to shop there. Hell, I would anyway and completely just ignore her and pretend you don't know her hahaha. Might not work, but it might piss her off and maybe she'll leave you be. (Unless shes stalker to the max!)
