Re: Share your favorite beauty tips.

  • I'm definitely taking notes - thanks ladies.  On the eyebrows, I totally need to do something with mine and am looking into one of the brow sculpting places as I've only ever done my old tweezing, and I'm not good at it, lol.
  • Any tips to make your eyebrows grow/fill in?! They've always been waxed super thin (I didn't know any better when I was younger and had them done). I have tried leaving them alone but all I get are random hairs everywhere
  • What's a good/inexpensive drug store face wash/makeup remover?  I have the worst time getting my makeup off my eyes.

Ponds makes amazing make up wipes, and I am not sure if they make a liquid remover, though.

For drug store stuff, I usually stick with Neutrogena. I have super sensitive skin. You can also try CeraVe and Cetaphil.
  • So this might sound totally weird to some of you but I'm obsessed with men's products. 6 years ago my ex had Nivea for Men face wash in his shower so I tested it and fell in love. I've used it ever since.

About 3 years ago FI told me "I don't want to be rude or hurt your feelings but I think you've used the same deodorant brand for so long that it's starting to not work on you anymore and you smell funky sometimes". Since that was the only women's deodorant/ antipersperant ever strong enough to stop my pit stains I decided to try his Axe deodorant because it must be strong. Yup, hooked ever since. Same with body wash, I started feeling like the girly, frilly-smelling stuff just wasn't getting me CLEAN after a long work-out so I started using his Axe body wash and I love it. It's actually pretty convenient now when we vacation because we only pack one set of toiletries to share :)

I would say let them grow out where they should be. You will get a few strays here and there that is not on your eyebrow line that are okay to pluck, but other than that I would not clip at them. I made that mistake, not pretty.

I would say once you have them fuller, Anastasia makes AMAZING brow fillers. Also, so does Mary kay and other drugstore companies. I use Mary kay and I like it alright. :)

To add in, if you have thinner shaped brows, you can still do this even when you grow them out as thick as you want them too. Filling in just makes brows more defined and really brings the look together when doing make up, or not. Hope this helps!

  • @Rwhite1023 Only pluck hairs that are far away from your eyebrows.  If you get a hair that grows in that's kinda part of for brow but looks out of place, take cuticle scissors and trim it- It's best to look up a photo tutorial of that, but it's what I do, I only ever touch tweezers for VERY out of place hairs, otherwise most of my brow grooming is with cuticle scissors.  I over plucked my brows in high school and had a hard time letting them grow back in because I thought you were supposed to tweeze all hairs that looked out of place- nope, just trim.

@lakeR2014 Olive oil is an amazing eye makeup remover.  I use a bottle of that to remove my makeup and use baking soda as a scrub afterwards.  SUPER cheap and works like a dream!

and @emmabean93 yeah she is SUPER creepy.  Like so creepy that if she found out where our venue is I would literally wear an extra garter to hide a can of pepper spray or even a small knife in to feel safe.  I could share a story, but it's a long one.  I don't want to report her though because while I have issues with her, it seems like she's behaving at work and I don't think it would be fair if she got fired or in trouble just because one customer is afraid of her, as scary as she is.

@haileydancingbear  this might be a weird question but how do I make the scrub?
  • @LakeR2014 It's super easy, I've done it a few different ways.  The first is to just mix in enough water to make a paste.  Another way which I do when I get free samples of facial cleansers, is to mix the baking soda into the facial cleanser you already use to give it a boost.  I also mix it with sugar and honey sometimes to make a scrub.

    • SPF every where, every day.
    • Do not go to bed with makeup on.
    • Exfoliate, but don't over-exfoliate because it dries out your skin and can actually cause blemishes.
    • Pencils too soft? Throw 'em in the fridge. Pencils too hard? Blast for a few seconds with a hair dryer.
    • Wash makeup brushes regularly to remove oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells. Also wash if you develop any cold sores/styes, etc. so you don't spread bacteria.
    • Always make a mess when applying mascara? Hold a tissue on your lids while applying mascara on your top lashes, and under your eyes when applying to lower lashes. Clean up any smudges with a q-tip dipped in a little bit of makeup remover.

I'm sure I have more that I can't think of right now.

You just have to stop plucking everything except the hairs that are really stray from your brows.  They'll have a growing-in phase.  You can help that by filling in with a brow pencil or powder.  I use Benefit Brow Zings for a more "done" look-- it comes with a wax, powder, tiny brushes, and itty bitty tweezer, so it's everything you need.  When I'm in a rush or looking more barefaced, I use Gimme Brow.  It's like a tiny light brown mascara with fibers in it, so it gives the illusion of more little brow hairs.  But you don't get as much color as the wax/powder combo.

Yeesh, can you tell I like makeup?

I'm also recently into the Bite Beauty citrus lip pencils.  They give awesome electric pigments.  I like to wear bright lips to offset my bold glasses (purple or brown/blue depending on the day).

  • I swear by Bag Balm as a moisturizer. It's made for cow utters.
  • Ooh I love random makeup tips!

My favorite recent one is that Monistat chafing gel is EXACTLY like Smashbox Photo Finish primer. But better, because it's cheap and it's clear so you don't have to worry about matching your skin. When I put my face on I do about a 1:1:1 mix of liquid foundation, moisturizer, and chafing gel. It's smooth and light. Then I add on and blend some straight foundation wherever I need a bit more coverage.

I also put a bit of scotch tape on the sides of my eyes at an angle, under where I would wing out my eyeliner if I were to do that while I put my eyeshadow and liner on. It makes the "wing" (not that dramatic but I can't think of a better thing to call it) much more defined when I pull the tape off since it prevented the shadow from going lower than I want.

How do you use the CCO? I'd be scared it would make me greasy and break out. No problems with this?

Speaking of which I'd like some tips on a general skincare regimen. I have dry skin but still get more zits than I would like. For the most part, I wash my face with Cetaphil when I shower and then put on lotion that also has salicylic acid in it but I wonder if maybe that kind of has the opposite effect of what I want. I only wash my face once a day and I kind of wonder if I should wash twice a day or if that would be too much. I don't usually wear makeup- maybe once a week most of the time. I really want to get my skin totally clear by wedding time.

  • Coconut oil is my winter staple. I literally use it from head (hair) to foot (my yucky feet). My skin tends to dry out and itch so coconut oil is the only thing that stops it. I am also a beauty junky and my new favorite item is Evian face spray. I have hard water and this stuff just makes my face glow.

I'd suggest going to see a doctor if you can.  You might need something stronger if you can't get rid of it yourself.  Going on BCP really helped me when I was younger

You might be drying your skin out too much with those products. I rarely break out (except a onesy-twosey during my cycle). I find that my routine of working out 20-30 min 5 days a week to open my pores, B. Kamins Acne wash every other shower, and moisturizer with no oil and SPF (I happen to use Prevage) does the trick. Also, I go with a moisturizing lotion as opposed to a cream. I find that when I use cream, it is too heavy and does cause blemishes. I also get microderm treatments every 3 months or so.

  • @FiancB
Sometimes when people use a lot of acne products it causes their skin to dry out, which means they produce more oil to compensate, causing more zits- I suggest going to a dermatologist if you can, but what I do when I start having little breakouts, and what my mom SWEARS gets rid of her acne (She actually only ever uses homemade recipes I give her- she claims everything else mass her break out) is that I mix equal parts baking soda and cinnamon with enough honey to make a paste.
But test this on your arm before you put it on your face, my mother and I, and everyone else I've given the scrub to, hasn't had an issue, but my younger sister had a bad reaction to the cinnamon.  Not too horrible, she just got red for a few minutes.  If you're like my sister, just replace the cinnamon with sugar or extra baking soda, that's what I do when I make her the scrub and her skin has no issue with it.

Baking soda is wonderful for sucking out impurities and cinnamon is anti-inflammatory.  Honey is anti fungal, antibacterial, and a wonderful moisturizer.  This scrub will get your skin clean WITHOUT drying you out.  I also use Witch Hazel as a toner, again, it won't dry out your skin but it is very soothing to your skin, some people even use it to treat cuts and bruises etc.  Use coconut oil to moisturize, it does NOT clog your pores, but moisturizes beautifully without exposing your skin to any harsh chemicals.  Overall this stuff is very gentle on your skin while still being effective, so it doesn't have the same downfall as other acne treatments have, where they are so harsh on your skin they actually cause skin problems.

  • Thanks @HaileyDancingBear! It's not that I'm a monstrous pizza face or anything but at any given time I have like two zits, clogged pores, and blackheads. A big part of my problem is resisting the urge to squeeze them out and pop them but I'm getting better about that.

Unfortunately birth control doesn't seem to do much for me in that department- I've been on several kinds and my skin stays pretty much the same or even a little worse. It wouldn't hurt to see a derm but I feel a little silly since my skin isn't really that bad. It's just hard to find a balance where the treatment isn't too much and actually making things worse.

It's funny, as a teen I had perfect skin! And I pretty much never washed it or conditioned it. And I wore thick makeup frequently, and more often than not was too lazy to take it off before bed. Now that I'm almost 27 and actually take care of my skin it's kind of awful. Sigh.

Question for the ladies who use coconut oil...do you just buy the coconut oil from the grocery store or is this something else?
I buy mine at a health food store because I buy other items there, but if you go in the health food portion of a grocery store, you should find some.

I use it as a hair conditioning treatment twice per week, as a body lotion after shaving and in cold winter months, and on my cuticles, feet, and sometimes even face if my skin gets extra dry. I keep it in separate jars though (body, hair, and cooking).
  • I started making homemade face masks and some work very well. My favourite so far is Lauren Conrad's greek yogurt mask (greek yogurt and probiotic capsule). I also like a mask with greek yogurt, honey, and lemon (smell is disgusting but my skin is radiant afterwards). I also really love Origins clay mask.

I can't afford professional beauty treatments, but once a week I give myself a facial (gentle cleansing, toning, bowl of steam or steaming towels, extractions [I learned how to do it properly], mask, moisturizing), manicure, pedicure, conditioning treatment, and waxing if necessary. My fiance thinks it's kind of crazy but I wake up extra early, make coffee and a delicious breakfast, work out or have a yoga session at home, and then have some "me" beauty time.

  • @HaileyDancingBear - coconut oil is now my new best friend! Thanks for the tip!

BTW ladies I also got a lavender salt scrub from Trader Joe's that is amazing. It has so many wonderful oils and left my skin feeling so soft. I recommend trying it out!
  • And if you're ever looking to spoil the crap out of yourself, I mix a scrub of two parts sugar/baking soda, one part olive oil, run a bath, slather this all over my body (Not on my lady bits though, lady bits do not like sugar)  and soak in the bath- the olive oil doesn't mix with water so it just soaks into your skin for as long as you leave it.  Shower off or wipe off the extra oil and your whole body is SUPER soft.  I did this before prom years back and plan on doing this the day of my wedding.
Is that sugar ANDbaking soda, or sugar OR baking soda? Thanks!
  • @amakayeb it's half sugar, half baking soda.  You can switch out the baking soda for sugar if you want, but I personally love using baking soda as an exfoliant.

  • I use coconut oil for literally almost everything. Face wash, shaving cream, moisterizer, conditioner, makeup remover, eyelash growth serum... Everything. This stuff is seriously amazing if you haven't tried it. When you use it to shave, it makes your legs SUPER soft.

I've never used it, but my sister really loves the Mary Kay lash & brow building serum. Half of her eyebrows were really really light so she looked like she only had half an eyebrow on each side. They look much better now.  You can also use it for your eye lashes.

That works? No offense, but I'm kind of dubious. Occasionally, I have hairs break off when I pluck them and then there's a brown spot until it grows out far enough that I can pluck it. I have pretty heavy full brows so I need to pluck ones that even aren't really far out of my brow line, otherwise they don't really look good.

That's what H likes. I've rubbed bag balm on cow udders before, and I can't stand the stuff!  I hate the smell!
I use a Braun Silk-épil Epilator on my underarms. I rarely get ingrown hairs and my underarms look and feel good - shaving tore them up. After a few drink I also use it on my bikini line, but it hurts like a moffo…but is so much better than shaving.

I slather Aquaphor Healing Ointment on my face one a week at night to keep my skin soft and prevent wrinkles. At 35 I still get carded everywhere.
Does that work really well?  Have you tried it on your legs? How expensive is it? I would really like to get an epilator some time, especially for legs and bikini.  My leg hair is dark so in the summer or if I work out regularly, I have to shave about every other day. And I always get red bumps shaving my bikini line, no matter what I do.
  • Great tips!!

Question. I'm 30 and starting to get that "tired" look. I'm super pale and always use SPF face moisturizer. I also use a Body Shop eye smoother which helps a lot and I think I'm going to try another level up on their anti-aging line.

Would that baking soda/sugar thing help wake up my skin, perhaps? Also, any other good anti-aging stuff out there? I'm scared of looking in the mirror one day and looking like Carrie in Mexico after Big leaves her jilted.
