Winter Olympics...

…yay or nay?

Things I'm not excited for:
* the (previously discussed) USA sweaters
* potential asshats who try to terrorize the games
* noooothing else being on TV for the next two week (note: we don't have cable)

Things I am excited for:
* the opening ceramony (…which better be good. I still love love K.D Lang's "Hallelujah" from the 2010 opening ceramony big time)
* figure skating. Judge away. I'm a sucker for that shit.
* medal, and lots of 'em. No apologies…I'm a highly competitive Capricorn.

Re: Winter Olympics...

  • I'm super excited for the Olympics and figure skating is my absolute favorite Olympic sport!

  • I love the Olympics! What I am enjoying now are the snarky twitter feeds from journalists. It is incredible how poorly prepared Sochi is for the whole thing!

I hope the games go well, but the lack of preparation is astounding.

  • I'm excited for the snow boarding. I have a bit of a crush on Shawn White. I'm not excited that it is being held in Socchi. I learned something very troubling today and it makes me almost not want to watch.

Right?? I've heard a lot about this and am so confused as to how we ended up there? Is it a lottery system?

Did you hear that Shawn pulled out of one of his events for fear of getting hurt b/c the field isn't up to par? Scary stuff!

  • I've been cracking up reading all the journalists' tweets about their half-built hotels.  It's definitely scary though, I have a lot of security and safety concerns.  Apparently some of the athletes have told their families not to come because they're afraid of attacks.

  • @niccirf yes I did hear about that! I can't believe they let that field be like that,
  • If you're on Twitter, the hashtag #SochiProblems is hiLARious reading.

I can't believe how poorly prepared Sochi is for this event. It's not like they didn't know it was coming!!

  • Figure skating for me. H likes it too, but I'm gonna have to force him to watch the guys because I watched them last Winter Olympics and wanna see the rematch between the American and the Russian.

  • The Winter Olympics are our favourites: DH loves the hockey and speed-skating, and I love figure-skating.

  • Ugh! I just learned something else and now I definitely cannot watch. They should never have been chosen to hold the Olympics.
  • I love the Olympics, though I prefer the summer ones over winter. let's see, hockey, speed skating, all sled events, most skiing, especially aerials, most boarding. Not a huge fan of figure skating, but it's too girly for me. Canada's gonna kick some hockey ass!!! We'll watch for hours everyday, anything that's on

  • I am looking forward to the Olympics.  I am more of a summer fan, but with winter I still love all the Ice skating events (I was obsessed with Tara Lipinski growing up);  I have not followed it at all lately but there is a young girl from my hometown that I hear is really good and the Gracie Gold girl looks like she has a good chance too (plus I love her name, so fitting), so that will be fun to watch I think.  And other than that I'll watch skiing and speed skating.  We don't have cable either, but we do get NBC through the digital antenna thank goodness. I miss my regular tv shows though!

I have no clue why Sochi was picked and am disappointed in the antics all ready and just pray no crazy sh*t happens and that everyone stays safe.  These athletes have made this there life so I'm still watching in support of them.

  • I would like Australia to at least get 1 medal! The winter games are not our strong suit!
  • I am torn, on one had I love the Olympics but on the other hand, I am so sad that the town is killing all the stray dogs. I thinki watching the Olympics will make me sad. :(
  • FI will probably watch all of the hockey.  I love watching the ice skating, things are a bit crazy around here so hopefully I have some time to watch it!

  • I'm so excited for the Olymmpics! I don't have a favorite sport - I'll end up watching as many of the sports as I possibly can.
  • I love the Olympics! I am super excited for them. Figure skating is one my favorites too. But I love all of it.

I also don't understand why Sochi was picked and how, after 7 years notice, they seem not at all prepared. The reports coming in from there are ridiculous. The accommodations even for the athletes are terrible!
  • I love the olympics. My heart bursts with joy during the ceremonies. I literally start crying during the opening ceremonies every time.

I love to watch curling, figure skating, ski jumping, luge, bobsled...

  • All the figure skating fans...remember Johnny Weir? You either love him or you hate him; I happen to be on the love side. Apparently he's a analyst now so hope they give him some face time, and that he throws a punch really dramatic kick on Russia's anti-gay laws.

  • I usually tune in to some of the events, ie. figure skating, and someone from our tiny town is in the Olympics this year so hopefully she does well.  However, the Olympic Committee has chosen to do the Olympics in a place that has anti-LGBT laws so I am boycotting the Olympics this year.

I am most excited for ice dancing... I like it a little better than pairs skating. Ice skating seems to have gotten very technical the last few olympics. Like, ok we did a triple axel, now time for a camel spin. Very little style to it most of the time. The ice dancing seems like it has more room for creativity to me.

I thought this was funny... Russia is pretty anti gay apparently so a group in Canada made this ad (it's fairly subtle... a kid wouldn't get it):

Edit: aw crap post above me beat me to it.

Well it's not exactly how it went down.  The Olympics cities are picked 6-8 years out.  Russia just in the past year started passing the anti-LGBT laws.     I guess they could have just cancelled the entire thing, but moving them isn't really an option 6 months out.
