How many pets do you have?

Re: How many pets do you have?

  • Okay, so I (well, SO and I) have five pets; a 14 year old corn snake named Cara, a baby (she's only four months old; so cute!) corn snake named Ali, two three year old leopard geckos named Flavius and Lividus, and a one year old Chili Rose Tarantula named Elsa. We were thinking about getting a kitten, by Cara would probably eat it (she roams the house freely when she's not being fed) so we're thinking about getting a rescue cat (fully grown) but apparently that's too many pets.

What do you guys think, is six just too many pets? How many pets have you got?
That's really weird! My corn snake is 17 and she's named Kora! Is yours a Carolina morph too?

I think, since snakes, lizards and (i'm assuming) a tarantula don't take up much space at all, you'd be fine space-wise to have a cat, and I'm also guessing that Cara must be between 4 and 6 foot long, since she's 14, so I'm doubtful a cat could eat her. The only thing I would worry about is that though a cat may not be able to eat Cara, they would most likely fight (at first anyway).

I've got six pets in the house; Kora (as mentioned above), Hattie (a 4 year old Fire Bee morph Ball Python), Mani (a three year old grey cat), Lemon (a two year old turtle) and Bob and Jim (my step-daughter's six month old Dagu's). Mani is fine with Kora and Hattie, but they both live in their cages.
  • I don't think that is too many as long as you take good care of them.  My FI and I have two kitties.  We are currently living in an apartment but when we get a house one day, we would like to get a dog.  I would love to get a Newfoundland pup!

Tiny, not understanding his name was ironic, Actually believed he was a lap dog.

But FI think they're 'too big' (is there such a thing as too big?  I mean when it comes to dogs).  He wants a doberman pinscher but I think they have too much energy for us.

  • As long as you have space for them and can responsibly take care of them, I don't think you can have too many pets. I know people that have 8-10 various pets (cats, dogs, birds) and take great care of them. If you get to the point that the pets are starting to get neglected or you aren't able to care for them as well as they deserve to be, then you have too many.

FI and I currently have two dogs, both Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix (one male, one female).  But, in the next few years, when we get a bigger house with a larger yard, we hope to get at least one more because FI wants to breed one of them... our male isn't fixed, but we got the female fixed because she has issues that could be passed on if she had puppies.  They are an adorable and super smart mix, but we don't want to be irresponsible and breed animals knowing there is a risk of deformities being passed on. And I won't let FI breed the dogs unless we can keep at least one of the puppies, so that will put us with at least 4 dogs (I wouldn't be surprised if we keep more than one puppy though).

  • One dog. A pit mix named Stella. She's 3.5 years old.
  • Two dogs. A 1 year old border collie/cattle dog mix, Ace (he keeps us on our toes. I swear he is always getting into something... haha) and a almost 5 year old Maltese, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle mix named Bogey.

  • FI and I have two beagles. Our girl Scout is 2.5 years old and our boy Bandit will be 2 years old in March. We love our fur babies!

Yes, Cara is a Carolina too! That's really freaky...

Also, OH MY GOD how much did a Fire Bee Ball Python cost you? When we got Ali, we were looking at getting a Flare Ball Python or a Galaxy Ball Python, but the only people that bred them that we could find were charging £500 for them, and we thought that a little excessive. Ali is a Snow Tessera and she cost £300.

  • We have 2 chinchilla's, Felix and Steve.
I want a dog but the timing is never right for us!

Felix is on top, Steve is on the bottom.

  • We USED to have just one dog up until yesterday. Winnie is a mix breed with gold/brown fur and about the size of a cocker spaniel. Not idea what breeds she has in her. Then my FI brought home a smaller dog that has grey/tan wire-like fur.

Or at least we did have six. Yesterday Jim and Bob escaped and were promptly attacked my Mani. We'd only had them three weeks! SD was over it within 10 minutes and wants a snake of her own.
  • I have one cat, his name is Garp.  He is the love of my life.  Fi knows in our household, he has to listen to the cat, first; listen to me second; and then he can do what he wants, after we are pleased.  Lol, absolutely kidding... but we both have to listen to the cat!
  • We have a black Holland lop rabbit named Riley. He's too cute. We also have 2 turtles, named Tippy & Yertle. And we have a hermit crab.. we won him on accident at a fair!
  • I have a 4 year old Siberian Husky named Anya.  She's a huge diva.  I'd like to get another one eventually and FI wants to get an Akita.  We may try our hand at showing by the time we get the Akita.  I've always been intrigued by conformation & performance events.

  • At our house, I always forget about my son's reptiles.

Our current pet count stands at:
    2 dogs (1 lab mix/1 miniature dachshund)
    3 cats
    2 lizards (1 bearded dragon/1 leopard gecko)
    2 horses

    Do children count as pets?

Honestly, I don't think adding another to the mix is awful.  Although, I'd be hesitant about the cat and corn snake mixing it up, especially an adult one.  It seems like as an adult, their "Hunt/Kill" drive would already be pretty firmly in place, whereas with a kitten, with supervised "play" time, the kitten might be able to be taught that the snake is a friend, NOT food.
  • At our house, FI and I have 3 dogs (June, Loretta, and Bama) and 1 cat (Wynona). And 2 dogs (Bocephus and Kaya) at his parent house. Bo was our second pet (the first dog got hit by a car) and my FI was still living with his parents and Kayla was my FI's dog since middle school. When we moved in togther the other three dogs lived with me so we brought them with us but couldn't bring Bo because him and Kayla (who is too old to adjust to a new enviornment with so many animals) would be depressed and have major separation anxiety. I get really sad thinking about how they don't live with us but they onlt live 5 m inutes away at a great home :) And we just rescued our cat from a shelter about 2 weeks ago and the dogs surprisingly like her!

FI and I have four cats; Lily, a three year old Bengal, Rosie, a four year ginger tabby, Poppy, a five year old Bombay and Tia, a 12 year old tabby. We are also looking at getting a kitten. We just love cats.

I also have a 10 year old African Dwarf Frog, named Toad, and FI is terrified of him.

Oh and we also have a collection of 10 (I think?) tropical fish.
