What food do you love & wish you had tried sooner?

About 3 weeks ago I had my first avocado and I am pissed that I've gone almost 29 years without this glorious fruit in my life!!! Don't know why I never tried it before but now I'm buying 3 a week and eating them on salads, sandwiches, mixed with greek yogurt as a chicken spread, seriously can't get enough!! What is your food love that you discovered late? FI never had salmon until he met me, now he loves it.

Re: What food do you love & wish you had tried sooner?

  • Spinach. I avoided it like the plague until about five years ago and now I can't get enough of it.
  • Chickpeas. I absolutely love chickpeas, but until my FI hummus like 2 summers ago, I never had them. Now chickpea soup is one of my favorite things to make!
  • Clam chowder. I was convinced that I didn't like cream-based soups, and then in my 20s, I tried clam chowder... I'm addicted. I could eat it every. single. day.

  • I used to hate chick peas growing up although I always loved hummus I tried chick peas again 2-3 year ago and they are so good. I use them a lot in my cooking now,

  • Indian food! Especially chicken curry. I used to really dislike overly spiced foods as a child, but a few years ago I went to India and ate the local cuisine and now I can't stop! I guess taste buds really do evolve with time because now my motto is the more spice the merrier!

  • Artichokes. And mustard. Actually like them both together….steamed artichokes with a butter/grey poupon/garlic dip. mmmmm!

I'm addicted to mustard now, too! I actually like sliced cucumber dipped in horseradish Dijon. It sounds weird, but it's delish!

Oh. Snap! I'm so going to try that. And maybe I'll share with FI if I'm feeling sweet - he looooooves all of the above.

  • Sushi.  Especially since my parents use to live in Japan and I was there a couple times a year for a few years during my anti-sushi years.  What a waste of good sushi eating years.

Mushrooms.  I again hated mushrooms during a time when I was living in the mushroom capital of the world.

History dictates I should like Cajun food since I no longer live in NOLA, but that did not happen.

Oysters, mussels, clams, basically all shellfish really. We went on a cruise to the Bahamas, and I fell in love with the seafare. :-)

ETA: apparently I can't spell today
  • @pumpkinsandturkeys I hate cucumbers and mustard...maybe I should try it in case I really am missing out on something lol

  • I was going to say avocados!  I discovered guacamole in college, but never really thought about other ways to eat avocados.  I love them and use them in my meals all the time now: especially salads.  I have 4 of them in my house right now.

Me too!! I bought a frozen Indian meal from the supermarket when I was line 13 once and swore off Indian food until my coworker recently talked me into it. Now I can't get enough of it!!! I'm trying to get FI into it so that we can go to my favorite spot one day :) Also hummus. I always thought it looked gross until I tried it last June at FI's cousins engagement party. Can't get enough of the stuff!

  • Fettuccine Alfredo.  I didn't really 'avoid' it, I just never tried it until my FI made it for me a few years ago.  Now it is one of my favourite meals.

  • Brussels sprouts! I didn't really avoid them growing up, I just never tried them. A couple of years ago, I bought pickled Brussels sprouts and now I eat them every chance I get!
  • I've taught myself to like a lot of foods. Avocado, mustard, blue cheese, beans, spinach, cabbage. I'm still working on horseradish and wasabi, and turnips.
  • I'm currently in the process of trying to make myself like yogurt.

I never are a baked potato until I was in college...loved sweet potatoes, roasted reds, etc. but somehow thought baked potatoes were awful. I'm now addicted!

Sour cream and ranch...I avoided all white condiments like the plague because I thought they were gross (still gag at mayo) but I'm now in love with ranch and sour cream.

A small thread jack...I eat barbecue sauce on almost anything (including stuff most people would put ketchup on), especially French fries, YUM...my FI thinks I'm insane and un-American.

ETA: Also for all you brussel sprout lovers (new AND old) I have a kick-ass recipe! PM me if you want it...or I can post it, this post of mine is just getting über long.

@jdluvr06 I love yogurt but am VERY picky about it. I will not eat any "light or fat free" yogurt because it's always runny as hell especially yoplait. I need thick. Even some brands of Greek yogurt aren't thick enough for me, I stick to Dannon Oikos.

  • Sushi is one and I also hadn't tried Avocado till way too late in life! I used to be a very picky eater and I didn't like to try new things. The past 5 years I've been with SO, he's really pushed me to be more adventurous and I've found so many new foods that I love!

  • SO MANY THINGS. And I can attribute my BF for encouraging me to try a lot of new foods.

    Spinach
    Avocado
    Pistachios
    Pesto
(I find it a little strange that all these things are green...)

Also, coffee! I used to hate it; now, I can't get through the morning without it! I make myself "re-try" foods that I don't care for every few months or so, because I find that my tastes have been changing.

THIS! It's so true! It's how I started liking mushrooms, peppers, onions, cottage cheese…and the list goes on.

My siblings and I grew up super picky, so we're having a lot of fun branching out. I haven't liked everything I've tried (I don't like cooked spinach still), but oh my god.

HOW did I go through my life without sushi?

    Asparagus?

Indian food. I know that sounds really general but I'm drooling thinking about it right now.

    Calamari.

Clam chowder (and I'm from New England, it's just embarrassing)

    COFFEE.

  • Guacamole.  I always thought it was gross (avocados as well), but H introduced me to guacamole and then I fell in love with just plain avocado.

I'm super adventurous food wise, so I very rarely try new foods anymore. I've tried it all. :(

But I did try veal brain the other day and it was fantastic. I'd totally order it again. But I like all offal, so I was pretty sure I wouldn't hate it.

Oh wait, octopus! I never really tried it before, and a bunch of restaurants that I've been to in the past two years have it (it's a very "in" protein right now) and it's great!

Sea Urchin. Omg. It could be the only thing I ate for the rest of forever and I'd be perfectly happy.

It's either love or hate for pretty much everyone I've ever met. For me, it's LOOOVE.

@lc07, I LOVE sea urchin! And it makes me SO happy to hear others who try it and love it!

My best girl friend recently tried it (without me, what a B!) and loved it too, so I'm excited for our next sushi date!

@JennyColada Yay! I'm glad to hear you love it, too. Only a few of my friends have tried it or have tried it and liked it. So it's nice to have uni-loving company :)
