@lc07 @jennycolada Sea urchin is next on my list for sushi to try! I'm a little hesitant, but I took a chance on unagi and LOOOOOOOVE IT SO MUCH. I even turned my partner on to it.

Do you have a recommendation in terms of what kind of sushi I should order? For example, I tried unagi nigiri first, and when I was first eating sushi, I tried a very plain salmon-avocado maki.

  • Well uni is my favorite. I do really enjoy halibut and yellowtail too. My parents love mackerel but I think it's gross (it's a very oily and fishy fish).

I also have a soft spot for Philly rolls (salmon + cream cheese) and spider rolls (fried soft shell crab).

I just suggest to go with friends and try everything (if you hate it then you have friends to finish it). Everyone likes different things.
  • I'm super adventurous food wise, so I very rarely try new foods anymore. I've tried it all. :( But I did try veal brain the other day and it was fantastic. I'd totally order it again. But I like all offal, so I was pretty sure I wouldn't hate it. Oh wait, octopus! I never really tried it before, and a bunch of restaurants that I've been to in the past two years have it (it's a very "in" protein right now) and it's great!
I love octopus! If you find it in one of those restaurant cooked on the grill with just some salt, pepper, a sprinkle of paprika and evoo order it! You will not regret! :)

  • Chicken livers, and blue cheese. I have hated these two things all my life, but suddenly one day about 3 years ago I just wanted blue cheese. So I ate it, and I love it. Same happened with chicken livers about 3 months later, but I don't eat them often because most places here only serve them peri-peri which is way too hot for me.

  • Avocado, which I didn't try until I was well into  my 20s. Kombucha, which I had yesterday for the first time and it was ZOMG amazing.

I'm fairly adventurous food-wise (although I don't eat sushi), so I'm generally willing to try all things at least once.

Yes!! I had never had it until I went to Greece. Every restaurant there has octopus hanging in the windows to dry and then they just throw it on the grill with some lemon and it's so frigen good!!

  • I never had a lobster until I moved to Boston. It's the only seafood that I eat but I don't think I can do it at home as I hate the idea of boiling them alive. :(  But they are so tasty.

  • Snails. I always turned my nose up at escargot, but FI convinced me to try them last years. Omg. Amazing. He always got me to try frog legs, but I did not like those.
  • I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. I'll try anything at least once. I like to re-try foods that I've disliked in the past every now and then to see if my tastes have changed. I've hated muscles my entire life but tried H's when we were on our HM and apparently I like them now. I hated pork chops growing up so I decided to make them a few months ago to see and I definitely still hate them.

  • Brussel sprouts and cauliflower. My parents didn't like these foods as children so I was never made to eat them and never went out of my way to try them. A few years ago the grocery store I was working at (Wegmans!) had brussel spourts as a sample with prosciutto and oil and they were SO GOOD. I also tried cauliflower for the first time 2 years ago baked in with mac and cheese. I've now become addicted to it and am trying to find all the ways I can to substitute other foods with cauliflower.
  • Nothing really.  :(  I try so hard to like seafood, but I just can't do it.  I try it every once in a while again, but I still always hate it.  I also refuse to touch mushrooms and ham

@jennycolada  -- if you like veal brain, you HAVE to try beef tongue! When cooked properly, it's soooo tender and delicious!

  • @ckel24 I make an alfredo sauce out of cauliflower puree!! Just boil it in beef stock, blend in the food processor, mix with a little of the beef stock, garlic, salt, pepper, a little bit of butter and a little bit of heavy cream. It's amazing over pasta and so much healthier than real alfredo! I just eyeball the ingredients but you can google for a real recipe if you like.

Omg that sounds amazing! One of my fb friends posted this week that she made alfredo with cauliflower and I was going to ask her how. I'll definitely have to try that this weekend for dinner.

@pumpkinsandturkeys yes! Yum! I love tongue! It's my standard order at Korean BBQ :)
  • Another vote for brussel sprouts. I was forced to re-try then when they became trendy and ended up on every menu in town. I am now obsessed (except they make me fart, oops!)

I have never had a macaroon. I am sure I would LOVE them, which is why I avoid them. I dont need to add anymore sweets into my life.

@phira - I usually just order Sea Urchin Nigiri. And since it's only two pieces if you don't like it - no big deal. If we are going out to an expensive sushi place for a big night out and going all out I'll ask the chef to just make me whatever he wants and include Sea Urchin because it's my fav. In my experience, It's usually served solo or with rice noodles or rice (nigiri).
  • Every day I didn't like sushi was a waste. At least it was only in my misspent youth.

I haven't discovered anything new recently...I'd love to. I don't think I've ever tried uni but we don't have a really great sushi place here. I haven't tried kombucha or brains either! I hear taranchulas are very tasty also.
  • Pork...In my religion it is a nono. I was a event and I had this pork tenderloin and bacon and basil wrapped scallops. It was delicious. Now I want more....my family isn't as strict and my sister tells me she eats it only once a week.

  • Duck and venison. I was against both when I was younger but once I tried them they are amazing. I might end up giving rabbit another shot now too. I hated rabbit as a kid.

Pheasant is amazing too.  (My family is full of hunters which means fresh meat! = yum!).  Rabbit is good, but I also really love lamb.  I'm clearly a meat eater. Everything but pig (which I just can't stand for some reason)

FI gets grossed out by me because if my steak isn't bleeding, I don't like it haha

Ditto!! I order/ buy the fattiest cut (rib eye) and I need it rare, practically just warmed up hahaha. When we go to a steakhouse, FI orders a burger well done or a shrimp platter. I'm like WTF is wrong with you?! LOL

My FI would looooove you! He pines over pheasant, and lamb is his favorite meat ever.

  • Oh my god. How did you all live so long without avocados? hahaha they are a staple in my fridge.

I didn't know what gelato was until college. Same with paninis.

I didn't know about walleye until moving to MN and it's my favorite fish now. I also didn't know what pierogies were until I met FI and his Polish family and I have to say that they're pretty bitching.

10000000% agree! I love a cool, red, bleeding center...just wave it above the grill!

I also love duck, lamb, and venison. We have a farm that we hunt on and nothing will ever beat fresh venison. We have an awesome recipe for fried venison bites, we've always called it "Bambi nuggets" which just shows how wonderfully twisted my family is.

  • On a side note: I STILL don't like brussel sprouts. Fi makes them anyway, probably because he then gets to eat my portion too.

I've taught myself to like a lot of foods. Avocado, mustard, blue cheese, beans, spinach, cabbage. I'm still working on horseradish and wasabi, and turnips.

You should try mashed turnips. I wasn't a big fan of them until I just made them up like mashed potatoes. A little butter, rosemary, and marjoram and they are delish! It has a lighter, slightly sweeter flavor than potatoes. Pairs nicely with fish or fowl.

On another note, has anyone tried jellyfish? Apparently jellyfish are being fished and marketed now, and I was curious as to how edible they really are? I'm fairly adventurous food wise but I don't know about that. I'm just curious how one prepares a gelatinous creature...

FI had a jellyfish "salad" at our favourite Chinese place right before they closed and now he's mad that he can't find it anywhere else. They fried it up kinda like onion rings. He said it was kinda chewy (a bit like calamari) but quite spicy. I don't know whether they're naturally spicy like that or whether the restaurant added the spice though.
