More tipping ?'s

Hi, Just curious for the answer, since I really have no clue.  I've tried to scroll through the post, but can't really find my exact answer.

DJ-owns the company, he is charging us an extra $100 travel fee to come into the city, and we have to cover his valet parking.  Would you tip?

Photographer-owns the company, pretty expensive already (4k)?

We live in Boston so everything is expensive, but with these people being owners of the company and taking all the profits, would you tip? I get it when you hire someone who probably is getting a cut taking out by the owner you should tip, but these people own the company.

I have no idea...Thanks for the input!

Re: More tipping ?'s

  • regardless of ownership titles and expense, unless its included in your contract count on tipping 5-20% for good service.

I would tip in this case only if you feel compelled after you've seen his service.
  • Miss Manners says you never have to tip the owner of the business, for exactly the reasons you think -- they're already getting all the profit.

If you want to, for an exceptional job, feel free to. But it's not required.

  • Tips are always appreciated- My mother owns her own business, so she does get all of the profits when we host birthday parties, but it definitely means a LOT to her when she gets tips.  Although she's also a small business owner and the extra income helps, so it may be different.

You're absolutely not required to, though, it's just a nice gesture.

  • Thank you for responses! I guess i'll see how they do after the event.
  • Yes- budget for a 20% tip so you have it available, but don't give anything until after the service is complete - wait until after the wedding to tip the DJ (if he's awesome) and wait until after you receive the final photos to tip the photographer if they are spectacular.

A person who owns their own business does get all of the "profit" but if by profit you mean [total price - associated travel and equipment costs = profit] then you need to understand that they DO need to make some wages at their job and that profit =/= wages.

  • I'm on the side that if someone does a good job, no matter their title, they should get a tip. Would you tip your stylist less for doing a good job because she owns the salon?
  • I mean but obtaining all the profit.  They own the company, therefore they are not giving a percentage to the owner.

They may be keeping all the profit, but how do you know what that profit margin is? Maybe they are just barely making it, and every little bit counts. I'd tip even if they own the place, provided they did a good job.

  • I wouldn't tip either of these vendors. A business owner is responsible for setting prices that cover costs and include enough profit to pay themselves. If they didn't, not my problem. If I was very satisfied, I would be sure to write a glowing specific review of their services, but there's no way they'd be getting an extra 20%.

We gave $50 to the DJ (he owned the company) following our reception because we felt he did a wonderful job. We did not end up tipping the photographer after receiving the pics as we weren't pleased with them and we felt he missed a lot of shots he should have gotten. Do not tip the photographer or videographer until after you've seen their work...

We're going to try to tip our DJ because he's part of a company and not the owner. Likely not going to tip our photographer very much because she's her whole business ... but we LOVE her so we'll probably tip her.

But yeah, the general idea is that tipping = "You were phenomenally above and beyond" and/or "You don't own the company, so here's a little extra." If your DJ is his own company entirely, then I would tip him 5-15% if he's exceptional.

I'm in the Boston area too, and we're paying a destination fee for a Western MA based DJ because it's cheaper than a Greater Boston-based DJ.
