Can't feel mine at all. After the insertion (immediately, and for a couple of days), I definitely felt uncomfortable, because my uterus was protesting the whole "WE PUT SOMETHING UP IN YOU" thing. But since those first few days, it's basically like nothing's any different. Sometimes, I forget I'm even on birth control.
I take this to mean my ute doesn't want anything in it, including a baby.  ;)

I can't feel mine, though I did get cramps with my period, but they toned down over about 6-8 months.  now it's just a dull uncomfortable feeling of cramps.  I was on the couch for the rest of the day after the first one, and had pretty bad cramps for the next few days.  So, I guess my periods got a bit worse, cos of the minor cramping.  I used to use BCP but wanted to try something non-hormonal.  Nothing changed by the way.
Somehow I missed you saying you had the Paragard iud in your OP. It's good to know you feel your periods didn't really get worse aside from cramping. I've read so much about how terrible your periods are after Paragard but I feel like my periods were pretty unremarkable before starting on the pill so I chose the Paragard over Skyla. I wanted to try something non-horomonal.

Maybe it's not so bad because the fetus grows so gradually? That's what I hope, at least. Although my 8-months-pregnant friend has been blogging about her experiences, and I'm kind of terrified.

  • @lmhollister, It's actually a Nova-T, since we don't have Paraguard in Canada, but it's still a copper non-hormonal IUD

  • I've been dying to know about all this but too shy to ask, so thanks everyone for answering. I want to get off the stupid BCP but I've been dreading the pain of an IUD. I guess if I can survive five cervical biopsies in one sitting I can handle the insertion and removal?

For those who have it, do you ever like feel it inside you? Does it make premenstrual symptoms better or worse?
I had very light periods to begin with, like 2-3 days, tops, and never heavy, or serious cramps. With my Mirena, I have zero periods, no premenstrual symptoms, no mood swings, nothing. Every 3-4 months I'll get minuscule amounts of spotting - as in, not even enough for a panty liner, just a little pink when I wipe.

I agree with @phira with the first few days I had minor cramping with my uterus wondering WTF I just did, but other than that, I feel nothing. It's pretty much the best birth control decision I've ever made.

  • I had mine removed earlier today and it wasn't anything like insertion. But reading how quickly people get pregnant after having it removed has me freaked out! I'll be making hubby's appointment with a urologist ASAP lol
  • Here's my update.  Getting it out wasn't bad.  Just a short sharp pinch and that was it.  Getting the new one still hurt, with the spreading cramping like before.  However, afterward has been much better so far.  I also took an extra strength Midol (Maxidol or something?) and I think my car's heated seat helped too.  I'm currently sitting with a heat pad, chocolate chip cookie (ok, that's gone) and a Tim's Hot Chocolate as my reward, but honestly, it's just minorish cramping at the moment.  A bit worse than normally with my period, but nothing that will stop me from getting up to start dinner in an hour.  The first time, the cramping was almost unbearable and lasted several days, slowly getting better.  It still sucked, but has been so much better than the first time.

  • @WinstonsGirl thank you so much for the update!! I have an IUD, and I was wondering how badly the extraction/insertion of the new one would hurt. I'll have to get a new one in another 4 years, but I've been curious. Totally worth it, though, IMO.

I had my Mirena removed in order TO get pregnant.

My GP told me that the first month after removal, it didn't matter how much DH and I tried, we wouldn't get knocked up.  Her words "But hey, have fun trying!"  Not sure if that's true across the board for ALL IUDs; I just know it for Mirena.

So, if you're husband's getting snipped, I wouldn't wait too long to make the appointment (or use back up).

@WinstonsGirl - THANK YOU!!  I've been checking this thread off and on all day (I'm a spaz).  It's good to know it may be a little less painful the second go around.  :)
Although, I think you deserve a second chocolate chip cookie.  I mean, you had one out and then one in.  In my world, that means two cookies.  :)
  • I should have gotten another cookie, but MIL is coming over for dinner and bringing leftover chocolate tuxedo cake, so I'll survive.  Sorry for the wait.  I'm west coast-ish, so later for the east coast ladies
