Re: Oh My Sweet Baby Jesus - Dress Codes

  • Sweet Baby Jesus, say it isn't so.

    Also... "Hair are appropriate?"
Yeah, they're trying to combine it with the whole "glamorous makeup and dramatic jewelry" bit, but it comes out really awkward. It should be, "Glamorous makeup and dramatic jewelry and hair are appropriate".
  • Umm, why all the dark or neutral tones? Is that actually a requirement for black tie or white tie for that matter? 'Cause, I never buy dark or neutral colors.

Same here.  I have several long gowns and they are all colored.  Black dresses are sophisticated, but boring.  I think prints or neon colors make a dress less formal, but a saturated solid color such as red or a jewel tone looks just as formal as black.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • I didn't even know "beach formal" was a thing... o.O

  • I couldn't focus on anything past "Hair are appropriate" until I got to the second "hair are appropriate." I'm thinking of adding some Bailey's to my iced coffee this morning
  • I saw an episode of "Something Borrowed, Something Blue" in which the bride mentioned that the dress code would be beach black tie.

    Whatever that means.

When can I wear my non neutral ball gown?
I know right! If I were invited to an actual formal event, I'm going all out!

Because its the best thing ever to wear a super fancy ball gown on a sandy beach. And to walk on the beach in heels or in a tux for the men. Some people need to honestly think things through. LOL

  • I like my jewel tones for formal occasions. I have also never heard of beach formal.

    What's a formal sundress?

Also, casual = dress pants? For real?

  • Umm, considering everything I own for black tie is colorful, I don't get the neutral or black rule. In fact, I don't think I own a full-length black or neutral-colored gown. Unless you count this as neutral: http://live.drjays.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/taylor-swift-6711.jpg

I think I own a neutral cocktail dress.

Oh, and "formal" on an invite ≠ "formal." When I've been invited to white tie functions, the invites have said "formal."
  • I went to a party once with the dress code "Ties for the men, Pretty for the women" was used. I had no idea what to wear.

  • Honestly though, I wish I had seen this sooner. I know the rules are a little weird but every asking me "What do I wear?" is DRIVING ME NUTS!!!! I have told everyone that I want it to be very formal evening wear, guys and tuxedos. And then the girls look at me and say "What should I wear?" All I can think is: Well the guys are wearing tuxedos so why don't you just show up in jeans and flip flops!!

If I have to answer that question one more time I'll shoot somebody!!!

Maybe I'll just copy this little picture, print it out, highlight which one I want, and send it with the invitation.

Why don't you just tell people "It's a wedding with a very formal feel, wear what you will feel best in"? That should trigger the common sense part of their brain to figure out how to dress themselves.
  • This might be a great idea for someone who doesn't know how to dress themselves...

But for the rest of us fully-capable adults? Ridiculous.

  • I would like to argue that "Casual" should not mean "Dress pants and a button up shirt."

    Isn't casual....casual?

I realize that I already quoted you, but honestly, you think your guests should wear Tuxedos to your wedding?

Seriously, if you want men to wear tuxes to your wedding, this had better be an actual Black Tie event.  Otherwise, that is insane.

And by "actual black tie event" i mean at a minimum it absolutely must: be an evening event, on a Saturday, with a seated, multi-course meal (as in "not a buffet"), full open bar with top shelf liquor, and probably a live band (though i wouldn't side-eye a DJ too terribly).  And i'm being conservative wth the Black Tie qualifications.  There are several others.

I'd NEVER in a million years think i was important enough that all of my male guests should have to shell out $100 to rent an outfit to wear to my wedding, even if i was having a wedding that would otherwise qualify as Black Tie.  Unless i ran in a crowd where most of the men owned their own tuxes and wore them regularly (which i'm assuming this poster does not, or else the women wouldn't be asking her how to dress), I'd feel like a terrible person for requiring this.  it's just a wedding for god's sake.  it's not the prom or an exclusive charity benefit or the Oscars.  we're not even having our wedding party wear tuxes, though i think that is a completely fine and appropriate choice.  WTF.

  • What's glamours make up? Is that like so much make up I kind of look like a drag queen? Is it like what famous people do? Because I see a lot of natural styled make up at the awards shows. I would have so many more questions.

I will admit, I'm terrible at dressing myself for dressy events. I wear very casual clothes usually, so when I have to go to something dressy, usually for FI's work, I make her pick out my clothes. She gives me three outfit options and I wear my favorite. I know, I'm a grown up and I should be able to handle this myself, but I'm never exactly sure what to wear. But if FI isn't available, a quick Google search helps me more then this thing does. I'm visual though. Show me pictures I'll get the idea of what you want me to look like.

That is adorable!  I'm not judging. I am terrible at dressing up, but so is FI. I can dress men better and damn men in suits are hot. (I loved Easter service!). I text my closest friend pictures of the invite and details and she texts me back what in my wardrobe would be best. I can tell you exactly what color suit, shirt, and tie is best for guys but if you asked me what colors I looked best in, I'd have no clue.

I like chicks in suits too. When FI told me she wanted to wear a suit instead of a dress...I might have drooled. A well tailored suit is a very nice look.
Chicks in suits isn't a bad look either ;)

I don't want to open this debate again, but seriously, as a Jew, it's insanely difficult to have a Saturday night wedding that is halachically acceptable. It's really not fair to exclude them from being able to have black tie events just because they generally cannot have Saturday events.

Agreed. I've been to many week-night black tie events. Time of day matters. Day of week does not.
