NWR - Speshul Snowflake at Work

So someone I know at another company decided that she needed a raise. She sends her boss an e-mail that basically says:

Hi boss,
So I was looking my position up online and saw that I could be making up to $50k a year (only makes $25k right now) and I'm demanding a raise. I have done some good things for this company and feel like I deserve it. I expect my demands to be met, and if you do not respond before Friday I'll assume they are met. If the answer is no, then can you please write me a letter of recommendation?

Thanks,
Person

This girl shows up late every day, is on her phone / facebook all day, and gets her work wrong all the time. She has done maybe two good things versus her like fifty bad things. I'm not really expecting any advice or anything on this, just venting. I understand everyone should be entitled to a raise here and there, but this is probably not how you go about doing so. I just can't believe she had the nerve to ask for a letter of recommendation after that.

  • I can't believe she had the nerve to ask for a raise via email.

Hopefully this will be a good opportunity to fill her spot with someone better.
  • HAHAHA oh that is precious!

hahahahaha, this is the worst way to ask for a raise I can think of!!

A few years ago, I found out that a male co-worker of mine who is super lazy and a Program Coordinator was making $15k more than me, an Assistant Director. I also found out my bosses secretary was making what I was making. I was furious.

But I scheduled a meeting with my boss. Said I had been doing some salary research into similar positions and that my role had far exceeded what was required in my job description. I said I would like to be considered for a raise because of X, Y, Z reasons and laid out my performance eval and other metrics to measure my performance. Got my raise of $15k right there.

I bet if I had gone into his office kicking and screaming and demanding to make as much as my male coworker (which, honestly, was what spurred the conversation in the first place), it wouldn't have gone well.
Right? Lol I was dying when the boss told me all this!

That is most certainly the right way to ask for a raise!

This company has yearly reviews around June/July where a raise is discussed. She's aware of this, I guess just chose to ignore it?
  • That's amazing.  Who does that?
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
  • @mrsRAJAB yeah I'm really looking forward to hearing what they decide to do. She needs to be put in her place!
  • Holy shit. What an idiot!
  • Please, please, PLEASE keep us updated on this saga!! This is hiLARious, and I need the levity.

  • I have a question though... OP, how you do you know what was in the email?  Perhaps because the speshul snowflake is telling people about her "demands?"  Double mistake.

Will do :) don't want to reveal TOO many personal details for fear she's on here (even though I doubt it) but my mom is her boss, so I'll be sure to have her update me :)

No, her boss is my mom and my mom showed it to me haha. Though, I don't doubt that she was going around telling people what she did because the day she sent she spent about half that day gossiping secretly at another girl's desk.

  • That's awesome! Keep us posted.

On another note, I called my recruiter at the staffing agency my current position is through and she informed me that I would be making more per hour than what I signed on my contract when they sent me in here...WOO! and I didn't even have to ask!

  • That's definitely classic!!!

I wrote a letter to HR and had a meeting with them requesting a raise. I pinpointed all the various tasks I do above my job description, and dollar amounts of money I saved the company. I stated that the average for all MY factors (education, years experience, duties, geographical location, size of company) was 8k higher than I made and that I thought it was fair that I get a raise of 4k. I thought that was totally appropriate and not pushing boundaries. They came back and gave me 3700. I just love when people don't take into consideration any of those factors such as size of company and region!!

  • Thank you for giving me a much needed laugh today! Do people honestly have no idea how to conduct themselves at work?
  • Oh Geesh....lol
  • That chick is BEGGING to be fired.

That's a very rude letter regardless of her work product.  Holy crap.

How about... first approaching her supervisor/manager/HR/whatever and asking like an adult, then if asked to put it in writing, write a polite, well-reasoned letter, NOT a demand with an ultimatum.

I'd be tempted to fire someone if they sent this to me.

  • *UPDATE*

Person's boss (my mom) finally decided to e-mail her back and said:

    Hello person,

Our yearly reviews are typically held in June/July and we will be holding to that tradition. As you pointed out, yes you have done a couple good things for the company. However, I do feel the need to point out some of your errors (insert huge list of errors here). Also, I have noticed that you are late to work almost every day and on your phone quite often. These are not qualifications for a raise. Any further questions please ask me.

    Thanks,
    Boss

    :)
    Muahahaha.

*followed by crickets as I think about how much time I spend on TK*
Yeah, I spend a lot of time on here at work too. BUT I make sure my work is always done hahah. Just a matter of prioritizing which this girl lacks.
