Veet Nair etc.

Any of you gals use these products or similar ones?

I'm tired of my legs and armpits getting a 5 o'clock shadow every dang day, but I used a Nair product on my legs yesterday and had to use it again this morning, and I already have stubble.

Grr. Maybe it was bc the hospital is too damn cold?

Eh, I honestly would almost always rather shave than use Nair or Veet. Depilatory creams take longer than shaving, they smell terrible, and my skin is so sensitive that even sensitive skin Nair makes me bleed.

The thing is, depilatory cream and shaving break or cut the hair where it's coming out of the skin, so the hair grows back just as quickly.

This one didn't smell terrible at all and I thought the whole point of them was to dissolve the hair deeper than just the surface and thus last longer?

I do wonder what effect a chemical that dissolves hair can have on my liver, but I'm srsly tired of shaving everyday, twice a day at times.

  • I've used it. I don't like the way it smells, and I feel like they don't get all my hair off. I do keep them in my bathroom though, JIC I want to switch it up.

  • I've never used them. I've thought about it, though. I have to shave my legs every other day, my pits every day. (Although it hurts to do it every day, so I shave every other day and wear a shirt with sleeves long enough to cover my pits on the off days.)

I've had a leg wax before. I liked the results, but it hurt so bad, I haven't done it again. Now, with shaving, I shave about once a month in the winter, and only shave during the summer when I plan to wear shorts.

I have thought about trying an epilator, although I hear it hurts as much as waxing. If I had the money, I'd get laser hair removal.
  • I found that they never got all of the hairs fully and ended up shaving off the cream in the shower to get all the hair gone.  I couldn't be bothered cos of that.

  • I found something that works especially with people with coarser hair: Betty Bare cream It started to work within two mins of application. It can be used all over the body, head to toes. I love it.

Live fast, die young. Bad Girls do it well. Suki Zuki.

  • I'm terrible with razors (I always cut myself.  always. *sigh*) So I use veet.  I prefer veet to nair, though they're in essence the same product and it's not like Veet smells much better than Nair.  But in any event, Veet works well for me and I usually only have to use it once a week on my legs and every other week for the pits.  (If i'm lazy/not showing my legs I can drag it to every other week but I'm usually pretty hairy by then).
  • I use Nair.

I am actually doing laser hair removal right now. Pricing wasn't too bad because I found Groupon deal.  Underarms was only $99.  Then when they had a sale I bought a package for legs that I pay monthly for, so it spreads out the cost, and they threw in free bikini line treatments & any additional treatments needed to finish my underarms.  Cost still wasn't bad, especially after they threw in all the freebies.

It won't work if you have light color hair though, because it works by finding the darker pigment. My upper legs are really light, fine hair, so it wasn't even worth doing treatments there because it wouldn't work at all and would have been waste of money. But, the hairs are nearly invisible, so it's not so bad.  The rest of my hair is dark and course, so it's been working great.

The biggest downside to laser is that it is a LONG process, usually about 1.5 - 2 years, with treatments every 6-8 weeks, until you get done. During that time hair growth will slow down a lot though.  Right now my underarms (after about a year of treatments) just start growing back right before next treatment, so I only shave once every 5-6 weeks. Legs are still growing back more quickly, but a lot fewer hairs and less noticeable. So, if its an option, you may want to check pricing or see if you can find deals for laser removal.  If you find the right deal, it can be fairly affordable.

Just make sure to check out the place first though.  You need qualified medical professional. And I know someone that found a deal for one several years ago, but the place gave her treatments too often (every week or two) then went out of business. You need to space the treatments out every 6-8 weeks because of hair growth cycles. Doing it every 2 weeks just hits the same hairs and wastes money with no results. So, do some research and ask questions beforehand to make sure you get what you pay for. Since it's a fairly new industry, it's easy to rip people off that don't know better.

I have only used Nair once and it was a spray can about 10 years ago in high school.  My friends and I all bought it for prom and I didn't like using it.  The spray got on my hands and was hard to wash off and it didn't smell great.  BUT my legs were incredibly smooth!  I used the cream first a couple days before and then the day of I used the spray on kind.  The smoothness lasted for a long time, too.
I haven't used it since because my hair comes in thin and blonde on my arms/ legs and I don't mind shaving my legs.  I always always use an exfoliating body scrub as my body wash (my skin gets super dry all year long) and I think it might have a (positive) effect on my body hair, too, but I don't know for sure.

I just don't bother shaving most of the time. Problem solved! In all seriousness, I pretty much only have the opportunity to shave like twice a week - 5 people, 1 hot water tank....shaving in cold water is no bueno. Occasionally if I'm wearing capris or a skirt instead of pants I'll shave from the knees down. I hate it, but fortunately my FI doesn't seem to mind all that much. Hopefully we'll be able to renovate our bathroom soon and have a point of use hot water heater in our shower.

I've thought about using Nair for the in between times when I can't shave, but I have really sensitive skin and I worry that it'll make my legs all rashy.

I used Veet hair removal cream for sensitive skin.  It actually works and doesn't hurt or anything.

Oh god professionally. I tried to wax the V on my own one time. Never again. Now every six weeks or so I go to my nice aesthetician and have her rip it all out. Hurts for 10 seconds, lasts for weeks.

And the more you do it, the finer and sparser the hair grows back.

  • Depilatories never work well for me- I end up needing to shave again later.

I'll confess that I'm a bad judge- I don't need to shave my legs more than once a week. I think that shaving and waxing are better for areas that get ingrown hairs- depilatories seem to cause more problems.

Oh- and skip the epilators- they were a bust for me!

  • Has anyone tried that home "no no" thing? I shave my legs and wax my bikini line but they get all judgey when I go too long between visits and I'd like an alternative without paying an arm and a leg for spa laser hair removal.

I have a friend who has it - says it works well, but it's time consuming and really expensive!

  • I have an epilator. I'm kind of responding to the most common issues with them so my post comes off a little negative, but I do like it more than shaving, and it's way cheaper than waxing. It's also really not that painful. It's just like tweezers but really fast. Pull a leg hair out with tweezers- it hurts way less than when you do e.g. eyebrows. It's more painful on more sensitive areas of the body, obviously. I have not tried it on the most sensitive because I am a coward.

It doesn't get all the hairs, which I find baffling. Some just won't get picked up even if they're long no matter how many times you go over it. That may be a function of how good your epilator is though. It does a good job on MOST of the hair though and you can pluck the remaining ones. The only thing is that it can cause ingrown hairs for some reason, which you then have to tweeze out of your top layer of skin (it's dead and it doesn't really hurt). I guess being pulled out from the root means that sometimes the skin grows over the hair hole before the hair makes its way out...? I'm no hair scientist, idk. You also have to be really careful on your armpits because of all the loose skin lying around ready to get pinched.

I really want to do lasering at least on my lower legs but it's so expensive. :\

  • I've used them when I first started shaving (was afraid of razors). They work and I didn't mind the smell but they took so long though hair didn't come back as quickly as shaving, at least for me. I'd rather use razors. If you leave that stuff on for even a little too long, it'll start to burn you. :-/

  • So I had been using the Nair product with Argan Oil since making my OP, but my armpit hair still came back overnight, and it burned the shit out of my armpits ><

After the 1st two days, my leg hair also came back O/N, but since then it is taking a bit longer.

So, being the researcher that I am, I'm going to continue using it on my legs, and switch to Veet on my armpits, after they heal, to see if the Veet will work better there and not burn me.

If the Veet doesn't work, I will try at home waxing my armpits, and if that doesn't work I think I'm going to start having them professionally waxed.

So, a question to the waxers, and this might be stupid, but how long do the hairs have to be to have them waxed?  And how long is too long?  I don't want to get judged at the salon like another poster mentioned ><

  • I did the laser thing on my armpits and bikini line.  It slowed the hair down, but doesn't get rid of it completely.  I've also heard that the hair will recover eventually and start growing back again at its old pace.  I got tired of going every 6 weeks to appointments to have it done.

If you get something waxed it has to be 1/4" long (the hair).

The longer the hair is, the more painful it is to pull out. I was a week late for my Brazilian last time and it hurt like crazy.

I ditto this. If I go too long between appointments, it hurts like crazy.

Flip side, I was supposed to have an appointment last week (five weeks after my previous appointment), but the hair wasn't long enough. I'm going next week instead (seven weeks between appointments). The hair still isn't very long, so I'm guessing it won't hurt much at all.

I will straight-up tell you: The first time I waxed, on a scale of 1 to 10, it was about a 7, and I have an incredibly high pain tolerance.

It hurt worse on top, near the bone, than it did underneath. As badly as it hurt, it lasted about 30 seconds and was gone.

Second time, it hurt like a 3. After that, it just feels a little stingy. If you already shave your lady bits, let it grow out for two weeks so the hair is long enough to get pulled.

Immediately after you get home from waxing, gently sponge the area with a warm, damp cloth. They'll probably put lotion on you so let that soak in before you sponge off.

Wear cotton panties, so the area can breathe. It might help to take an advil or aspirin before you go.

It hurts the first time, but it's totally worth it.
