It feels like forever

I was on vacation for the last 9 days and haven't checked TK the entire time. It was weird and seemed like soooooooo much longer!! I'm sure I missed some good snowflake happenings. Vegas was awesome, Grand Canyon & Sedona AZ were amazing. I've been but FI never had so it was great to show him around. I seriously may call the bed & breakfast and ask what mattresses they use because it was the absolute most comfy thing I've ever laid on in my life.

My boss is out this week so I have an easy transition back to work, and then some awesome weddings & BBQs coming up this holiday weekend. Yay! Any of you guys have vacation or holiday parties coming up?

Re: It feels like forever

  • We're going to Eric Ripert's NYC restaurant Le Bernadin next month. I can't wait! I'm going to starve myself that week so I can indulge on everything I want.

I have my bach party weekend in July. We're going up to the Finger Lakes.

And that's it until the wedding.

Oh - you missed a JennaF that trolled us. She made up some story about her brother dying. Ay yi yi.
  • Whoa, pretty sure that "report" button is new- eh?!

  • We're pretty sure the 'report' button doesn't work right now.

DH and I have a wedding May 31, so that's fun. We had the bachelor/bachelorette parties this weekend, and those were both clusters.

I'm not sure what we're doing for Memorial Day, since the annual family picnic with DH's family got cancelled.*

    * Actually, it's still going on, it's just that BSC granny was dis-invited, and DH never liked going anyway but went because BSC granny guilt-tripped him.

  • @climbngbrideny Ooooo I've never heard of Eric Ripert. But you'll have to let us know how it is. I'm taking FI to NYC in August and would love a recommendation.

Aaah you missed all the update dramaz! TK updated, and the forum reverted back to some crap settings. They haven't removed the report button, but they've fixed the system so that 1) people aren't triple-posting by accident, 2) notifications are working, 3) PMs are working, and 4) love-its are public again.

  • @hisgirlfriday13 Totally hear you! We don't do anything family related- our holiday cookouts are all at friend's houses lol. Although I'd think you'd want to go knowing BSC isn't going to be there :)

@phira oh that sounds like a shitshow. hopefully it's fixed for good!

  • @jenna8984 glad you had a wonderful time on vacation! You missed all the dramz here but luckily it's settled down now.

@climbingbrideny where in the Finger Lakes will you be?! It's my neck of the woods!

It is!?!??! I have no idea. I'll have to check with my MOH. I know we're renting a house.

I went to Le Bernadin once a few years ago. It was one of the most amazing meals I've ever had. Enjoy!

  • @jenna8984 -- My family always did the patriotic stuff on Memorial Day and Independence Day -- went to the cemetery to lay flowers on the graves, then watched the parades, then had a cookout and played yard games and did family stuff.

I wouldn't mind going, except that the people who are still invited are two brothers, their wives, their eight kids, those kids' spouses, the kids' kids (roughly DH's age), and the kids' kids' SOs. So it's a family reunion for uncles/aunts/cousins/etc.

The original eight kids are DH's father's first cousins, and he's not terribly close to them, so when the choice is go somewhere he never really enjoyed going but went for a 'family obligation' or go hang out with friends...we pick friends. :)

  • I had my Bachelorette party in Palm Springs this weekend - super fun! Then next week is Vegas for our honeymoon. And before that, my FI and are taking a few days off this week just to enjoy each other's company before the wedding. It's been crazy with school and work so it will be nice just to settle down before wedding craziness happens. :-)

If you find out, let me know! It's such a beautiful area and in July it should finally be nice and hot so you can enjoy the outdoors. And there's a ton to do - especially wine tasting!

I definitely will! My MOH did mention wine tasting (I think that's one of the reasons she chose the area). Also, our house has a pool!
  • Glad to hear you had an amazing time! Vegas is definitely a lot of fun. I've never been to AZ, but I would love to go, I hear it's amazing.

You def missed some drama as the others pointed out. Never a boring day on these boards lol.

FI are thinking of taking next Tuesday and Wednesday to extend our weekend. On Saturday we are going to a graduation party. FI's family friends daughter is graduating college. We received an invitation in the mail which had a poem. In the back there was another poem which said something along the lines of "Please give cash as a gift to help DD pay for law school." Oy. On Monday we are going to our friends house for a BBQ. Oh! And Saturday I am getting my hair done - I'm doing the keratin smoothing treatment so my hair can finally go back to being manageable again :)

    Ooh, that sounds fun!!!

I'm actually OFF on Memorial Day -- like, paid holiday off -- for the first time in about a decade, so I'm pretty excited about that.

BSC granny wants me and DH (well, really just DH) to take her to the cemetery where her husband is buried so she can put (fake) flowers on his grave. DH is resisting, and BSC granny is imploring crazy auntie to ask me to ask DH.

    Uhm....no.

I'd kind of assume that fake flowers on a grave is kind of littering. Like, really, that's not gonna biodegrade.

Eww yuck. I wouldn't take her either after how shitty she's been to you!

I think we're going to the restaurant we're having the rehearsal dinner at to put down the deposit, grab lunch, then chill at home for the rest of the day. We have a car show to work in the evening on the 23rd, a wedding on the 24th in DE and a housewarming in PA on the 25th, so we definitely need time to decompress. Good chance dinner will be Chinese take-out because I am doing fuckall once I get back on the couch. heh

I don't know the traditions in anyone else's family, but as long as I can remember, Mama HisGirl has emphatically told me, 'I swear to the baby Jesus, child, if you EVER put FAKE FLOWERS on my grave, I will come back and haunt your ass up one side and down the other until you take them off and put real flowers on there.'

Last year, as we were driving her out there, I texted Mama HisGirl and said, 'Your haunting-due-to-fake-flowers edict only applies to people we're related to, right? Like if BSC granny puts them on her dead husband's grave, I'm in the clear?'

Our local cemeteries come through once a month or so and remove all dead/faded/old/whatever grave ornamentations, so they'll only be there for a few weeks, at most.

But what I don't get -- and maybe I'm just too judgemental -- is that she buys the cheapie, left-over fake flowers from Hobby Lobby or Michael's -- the remaindered ones that look all beat to hell, and then her rationale is, 'Well, I don't want to spend a lot of money on this, 'cause it's not like he can see them anyway, so it's just for showing other people that I care.'

Then...wouldn't you want to buy NICE flowers rather than flowers that look like shit?

We put fake flowers on my grandparents graves. They look great and last a long time, and get replaced every season.

I know, right?? And as we were driving her out there, she asked me, in a kind of snotty tone, 'Do your kind of people do this?'

    I was like, 'Excuse me?'

She said, 'You know. You Catholic kind of people. Do your people do this?'

I said, sweetly, 'Oh, no, no we don't. My mom gets planters and she plants real flowers -- six or seven varieties each -- in them and then she takes them to her parents' my dad's parents' graves, her grandparents', and some other family graves. My people don't do fake flowers. It's disrespectful.'

She said, 'Well, I just do it for show.'

I said, 'I know. So does Mama HisGirl.'

    And left it at that.

    @hisgirlfriday13 "Your people?" Ahahahaha wow.

"My" people (aka Jewish tradition) place stones on graves, so that probably would really have thrown her for a loop.

  • @phira -- Yeah, pretty much anyone who isn't Lutheran or main-stream Protestant is 'odd' in her book. She doesn't actually KNOW any Jewish people, but I'm sure that would baffle her.

If she weren't such a mean old battleaxe, it would actually be kind of funny and I could laugh it off. But, of course, she IS an old battleaxe and I can't laugh it off.

Serious question @HisGirlFriday13‌. Why do you consider fake flowers on a gravestone to be disrespectful?
  • ScoutF said: Serious question @HisGirlFriday13‌. Why do you consider fake flowers on a gravestone to be disrespectful? Because my mother always told me they were -- and to me, they seem like not as much effort went into them.

Left in the sun, they'll fade quickly and look bedraggled. To me, if you're going to go to the effort, do it to the fullest, you know?

On balance, I don't think silk flowers are bad -- I've seen lots of weddings with silk flowers that were done beautifully.

Part of this is my history with DH's grandmother, who hates me, but to me saying, 'I'm going to buy the cheap flowers because it's just for show anyway' seems disrespectful. Either do it well or don't do it at all. But don't half-ass something.

Also, it was a dig at her for the whole 'your kind of people' comment. She still REALLY has that Protestant bias against Catholics going on.

Oh yea, so this was awkward while on vacation......I was visiting the city where I used to live so that FI can meet some of my friends before they come East for our wedding. So we had a free night and my friend Dan said "OMG Matt (our old coworker that I hadn't seen in 5 years) is having a party- you should totally come and be my surprise guest! He would love to see you". I thought um, ok, what the hell. When Matt worked with us he was an accountant- I didn't know he is now a cop and I also didn't know this was a cocktail/formal attire party...so FI and I show up in jeans, flip flops, both with sleeve tattoos, FI with a giant beard. And the entire party is cop friends who are mean mugging us like we are the scum of the Earth. Matt did not look so excited to have us there. We quietly crept out after 30 minutes and I'm sure the minute we did they were all asking "who the F was that couple".

  • Oh no, that's so awkward!! Dan should have given you guys a heads up that this was going to be a more of a formal party. What did Dan say when you guys showed up?
