Does anyone else feel that they look good in the mirror

and super fat/ugly in pictures? I am the worst picture taker. I refuse to believe my pictures are the real versions of me.

My self esteem is destroyed everytime I see a picture of myself.

  • ME! It's funny you ask this. I sewed a skirt the other day and was super excited to show my mom, so I sent her a picture and I was like, no way, my hips aren't that huge. I looked in the mirror and I thought they looked fine. Stupid pictures.

My partner and I are some of the least photogenic people ever in the history of the planet. I am so with you.

Honestly, one helpful thing is selfies. If you look at photos of yourself more often, you get used to how you look in photos more easily.

  • It depends. Usually when I look in the mirror I look fine because I dress for my body type, and my hair/makeup and whatever are fine. If I gain extra pounds, I think it all goes to the worst areas, so I look terrible in pictures. When I am at my normal weight, or fit, then I tend to look fine in pictures. I also try to work the poses to flatter me best

  • As a girl with very wide hips, I've perfected posing to flatter my shape. I'm not skinny by any means but I am not fat either. So It is a weird in between.

I'm honestly the opposite. I hate mirrors with a passion.

  • I'm the opposite sometimes.  I think my face is way more photogenic than it looks in person.  But every once in a while I'll see a picture of myself and be like, "My arms just CANNOT be that huge!!!"

Just tell yourself it's because the camera has an awkward angle.  It's true the camera does "add pounds" because you're 2-dimensional in a photo, but the mirror is reflecting back a 3-dimensional image.  So the camera flattens us out and the effect is we look wider than we really are.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Where the hell did the rest of my comment go?? I wrote how I perfected the "skinny" arm pose and that regardless, I don't always like how I look in pics, so I do agree with your sentiment.

  • The camera really does add some extra pounds that aren't actually there. That drove me crazy when I was trying on wedding dresses - I would look back in the pictures and suddenly think every one of them made me look fat and awful.

  • Yes! I cannot take a good picture. I always have something weird going on. Bad posture, funny face, crazy hair.

  • I always look wider and shorter! Since I struggle with body acceptance, it really sucks to see pictures that widen me out. Thank goodness for you ladies. I don't feel so alone.

  • Yes! I always look so awkward in pictures! I have no idea why, my eyes always randomly get squity for some odd reason. I at least have to take a couple of tries before I get anything decent looking.

  • I hate that Facebook has made photographs accessible to everyone everywhere. I hate pictures of myself, because I feel like I look great and then I see a picture and I feel fat and awful.

  • I hate pictures. I feel like they make my already flat features look even flatter - but I'm not about to spackle on 50 lbs of shading/contouring makeup like Kim Kardashian does every day. Thank goodness I still look cute in pictures. lol

  • UGH wrong thread to read as I prepare to go wedding dress shopping. I always feel like I look in the mirror and have that "I look GOOD" moment... then I take a picture and am like WTF HAPPENED?! Glad I'm not alone, ladies.

  • Sometimes. I'm super self-conscious about my arms and sometimes I see pictures and think "Holy shit, can they really be that big?!"

There was this full-length mirror in the bathroom at work though that I swear was like a fun-house mirror. It destroyed my self-esteem every time I saw myself in it I looked super short and fat.

  • It's more my face that I hate seeing in pictures than my body. Sure my boobs cold be bigger but they don't look awful in pics. My face is another story. I'm hopeless when it comes to makeup (and super cheap) and my hair is pretty much always a hot mess so unless I'm taking a selfie, I'm pretty much guaranteed to look like a youngster.

I think there's like ... an "arms" thing. Because I definitely look at photos and wonder if my arms are THAT big. They don't look THAT big in real life!

  • I found out I had a double chin and goofy smile by looking at pictures of myself.

    Yes.  I am terribly un-photogenic.

  • This is a huge part of the reason I refuse to be photographed all day for my wedding AND why we're not hiring a pro.  I don't even like pictures of myself.  I want a few for the photo album and to look back at, but there is no way I'd have a fun day with a photog up my butt all day.

  • Absolutely!! This sounds so self absorbed but I never take a picture with friends unless I get them on my right side so that my left cheek is toward the camera. I have a birthmark or my right cheek (a la Paula Abdul) and I just think that side of my face looks so gross in pictures. I'm actually planning to stand on the right side of the alter at the wedding so it's not in all my photos and if anyone asks I'm going to say it's because I want my left tattoo sleeve in the pictures (which is not a lie!) LOL

  • I'm horribly unphotogenic. I never really like looking in the mirror but cameras just make it all worse.

I come from a family where spending time on hair and makeup is deemed frivolous/silly. I also take crap if I'm dressed up (i.e. anything nicer than shorts for a bbq) so I'm forever trying to decide between looking worse than necessary or taking shit about my appearance.

I've (mostly) come to terms with being the ugly twin.

I was a dancer and so I must say sometime I pose quite "pageant-y" (which is an insult to many dancers and flattering to others sooo...).

I ALWAYS turn my lower body to the side as to make your hips be facing away from the camera. I usually have at least one hand on my hip (or waist which is where I am the skinniest so it draws attention there) if not two, because I'm sassy like that. I have decent sized boobs so by turning my hips and drawing attention to my waist, I look more proportional.

Now, when I say I turn my hips away from the camera, I don't mean completely sideways but just slightly. It doesn't make me look super thin by any means but does help my hips not look so huge.

  • I HATE how I look in the mirror, pictures, etc. I was so nervous about our engagement photo shoot, I was puking the morning of. When I saw some of the pictures during the shoot I was trying not to cry because I thought I looked horrible (my photographer did an AWESOME job, just a shitty subject). When she posted a blog of our shoot, I had someone else look at them first to make sure they weren't all horrible, once I was told I looked good, I looked at them myself. I still critique the shit out of how I look though.

  • One of the things I can do well, is take a picture. I've posed for enough friends to figure out what works and what doesn't. Chin up, shoulders back, hips turned slightly, and for the love of god do not shoot from below! I look super weird shot from below.

That said, there are some pictures that make me go "What the fuck happened here?!" and sometimes I look at them and think "Why am I so pale? I know I'm pale but this is some Casper shit right here, what the fuck?" I have not figured out how to pose to look less pale. Except to pose by people paler than me.
